Season of Lent...40 days...This year Feb 18 to April 5...A time for introspection. Someone recently asked me if I was okay and said I had looked so sad on Ash Wednesday. She said that she had been praying for me and as I would al- ways say, I will never turn down a prayer for me! I don't recall if there was something in particular on my mind that day but I do know that every Ash Wednesday seems to weigh very heavy on my heart; and yes, I was probably sad. I honestly do eagerly anticipate the annual journey of Lent but I also know that it is emotionally and spiritually difficult as I spend time in Scriptures that make me consider where I have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God this last year. For me it is that kind of reflection that perhaps many make at the end of every calendar year. It is through prayer and reading God's Word during the 40 days that my need for growth is revealed. I am humbled and feel that I am regularly praying for forgiveness. I do journey through this season humbled but not without hope because I know that Easter is coming. I do know where to find my hope and for- giveness. During the last 6 months, staff and lay leadership of the church have worked together developing a vision statement for CUMC... At Carmel UMC we are... CONNECTING with God and others, GROWING in faith and love through Biblical learning, SERVING our community and world as followers of Jesus Christ. This statement has been developed to direct all of the ministries/programs/events that we have to ascertain that we are about growing disciples for, and of, Jesus Christ in all that we do with our time and with the dollars of the church. This vision statement gives to us direction and focus and clarity for what is primary for us as the church. It moves us forward and upward. I also know that individually this same vision statement can be for me as I finish trudg- ing through the mire of my sinfulness and move forward to living as one of many Easter people. How may I be connecting with God and others in bigger and better ways, grow- ing in my faith and love and Bible learning more deeply, and serving my community and world more often? I have a great deal to learn and a long way to go. I choose not to see it as hopeless but as a hopeful quest for what God desires for me as I pause every year for a season. I hope that this season you find yourself challenged also...it is ok to be sad...but just for awhile. Blessings in Christ, Patti Sat. 3/28 1:00pm: ......... Season of Lent...40 days...This year Feb 18 to April 5...A time for introspection. Someone recently asked me if I was okay and said I had looked so sad on Ash Wednesday. She said that she had been praying for me and as I would al-ways say, I will never turn down a prayer for me!

I do know where to find my hope and for-giveness.

I also know that individually this same vision statement can be for me as I finish trudg-ing through the mire of my sinfulness and move forward to living as one of many Easter people. How may I be connecting with God and others in bigger and better ways, grow-ing in my faith and love and Bible learning more deeply, and serving my community and world more often?

I have a great deal to learn and a long way to go. I choose not to see it as hopeless but as a hopeful quest for what God desires for me as I pause every year for a season.

I hope that this season you find yourself challenged also...it is ok to be sad...but just for awhile.

Blessings in Christ, Patti

CHURCH STAFF

An update on Communications from

CUMC:

I’m sure you’ve noticed a few changes recently in communications from CUMC… let me explain. I am working to make our communications concise and pur-poseful. The Contact will be a great platform for you to find out ways to Connect, Grow, & Serve at CUMC as well as find out ministries and missions that have suc-cessfully fulfilled the vision too! The Contact will con-tinue to be a monthly publication, emailed to the entire church community. Limited printed copies are availa-ble at the Welcome Center, and we mail copies to shut-ins and to those who have specifically requested (let me know if you’d like a printed one too!).

Additionally, you may have noticed the in-service an-nouncements have been reduced on Sunday morn-ings. In an effort to allow more time for worship, the worship planning team is trying to limit these an-nouncements to TWO announcements each Sunday morning. This does NOT mean that there are only two things happening in the life of the church—or that only two events are important. It just means, we know you are at CUMC to worship on Sunday mornings, and we value your time here! Please take advantage of read-ing the entire bulletin each week, as well as watching the lobby monitor slides for all of the updated events and opportunities at CUMC.

And finally, in the very near future you will also see an updated church website! This is a very exciting time for CUMC! Why change the website? We need to have a platform that is a little more user friendly, can be easily updated so that YOU have the most current information and happenings from CUMC at your fin-gertips.

All of this does take time, and I so appreciate your pa-tience while we undergo some updates. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Blessings, Rachel

New Books in the Library!

One of the objectives of our reading programs is to increase sensi-tivity to all human beings—their needs, interests and concerns and encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today.

We just made available new books in our church library, and we in-vite you to make use of these great books! Here’s a bit about two

of the books:

Good God, Lousy World, and Me: The Improbable Journey of a Human Rights Activist from Unbelief to Faith

In this extraordinary memoir, one of the foremost human rights ad-vocates of the last half century shares her brutally and hilariously honest story of finding God.

Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers

It is these three prayers – asking for assistance from a higher pow-er, appreciating what we have that is good, and feeling awe at the

world around us – that can get us through the day and can show us the way forward. Anne Lamott recounts how she came to these insights, explains what they mean to her and how they have helped, and explores how others have embraced these same ideas.

Events coming up to help you CONNECT, GROW, & SERVE…

March Mission of the Month: Soup’s On! Soup's On ministry at Roberts Park is in its second decade of service to our community. Since 1999, Soup's On has prepared and served nearly 150,000 meals to our neighbors in need. Each Sunday a hot meal is prepared in our large commercial kitchen, and served to 250 guests after our 10:30 a.m. worship service. Churches and organizations from across the Indianapolis metropolitan area participate in this ministry, and each week a different team supervises and shares in the preparation and serving of the meal. This effort takes a crew of 20 volunteers each week, and nearly 1000 each year.

All donations now go to the Donation Center in the Mission House. Open 24/7/365, you will find clearly-marked shelves for your donations.

Mission Accomplished: During the month of January, 235 families visited the Food Pantry, serving 25 new families. The Food Pantry helped feed 881 people last month.

The need still exists! For more info email: [email protected]
