He's telling us we should always forgive our brothers when they have sinned against us. God in heaven has forgiven us all of humanity's sins. How wrong it would be for us to deny our brothers and sisters a similar forgiveness. Jesus then went on to elaborate this point by telling a story (parable), the parable of the unforgiving servant. JULY 2016

TheContact

Our nation is still reeling in the aftermath of the massacre in Orlando, Florida. We continue to unite as a nation in prayer and support of families and loved ones whose

lives were tragically taken away from them. We unite in prayer for our government leadership to continue to search for ways of preventing anything of this magnitude from happening again.

And as we move forward, one of the issues that is essential for healing and moving forward is forgiveness. I know that many will respond by saying, “Forgiveness??!! How can we even think of such a thing!?”. As hard as it may be to believe, forgiveness is necessary for healing and moving forward. As Christians we know this clearly through the Word of God.

“70 x 7” is a Biblical concept that Jesus made very clear.

The name 70x7 is synonymous with God's eternal forgiveness. We find this in Matthew 18:21-22 as Jesus answers Peter:

“Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him,” Not seven times, but I tell you, seventy-seven times.”

Jesus isn't telling us to forgive our brothers 490 times, or 70 times, or 77 times. You will find that in Matthew 18.

Wow!!

Does he mean I have to forgive myself for the sins I have done?

Does he mean I have to forgive those who have hurt me...even those who have never indicated that they cared that they hurt me?

Does he mean I have to forgive terrorists?

Forgiveness is an issue that leaves none untouched. All of us sin and hurt others. All of us have been sinned against and hurt.

This is why we will kick off our fall with a series entitled 70x7. We will be launching this four week series on Sunday, August 14 with a speaker/author I am very excited about, Jeannie Bishop. How can you be preparing and be ready for this series?

Buy Jeannie’s book. It will be on sale in the Gathering Place on Sundays. I have already read the book and promise that you will be touched and amazed.

Mark your calendar NOW for August 14 when Jeannie Bishop will preach all the worship services that day and stay beyond the services for a book signing and Q & A session

Plan to invite a friend, neighbor, or co-worker as this is a naturally easy ask for someone to come to church with you not only on August 14 but for the series as we continue to look at many aspects of forgiveness

Watch for our yard signs and when available put one in your yard, help us spread the word about this series within our community

Pray for Jeannie and the series and for yourself...that through this series the Holy Spirit may convict you in the way that you need surrounding forgiveness

70 x 7...

From the Quilting Table:

The Carmel UMC Quilters are looking for another quilt top to quilt this fall. If you have a quilt top that needs to be hand-quilted, we would love to quilt it! Please bring it to us any Friday morning between 9:30 and 11. We charge a modest amount for doing this, and all proceeds go to charity.

Youth Mission Trip

Wow! What a great week of learning God’s Word, serving the forgotten and discovering the blessing (and challenge) of being in close connection with the church family during our time in Nashville, TN from June 6-11.

29 students and 5 adults learned to “Pu Cho Werk N” (translated “Put Your Work In”) as we studied 2 Timothy 2:4-6 and learned lessons from the soldier, athlete and farmer in regards to following Jesus. Ask one of the mission trip attendees to share a highlight of the experience but in the meantime, here are a few examples of the impact students felt.

“I never thought I'd ever make such strong friendships in such a short period of time, nor did I think I could fix broken relationships in that same time. I did both.”

“I don't think I've ever worked that hard, yet laughed so much in my life.”

“I've never quite realized how I impact others, and Jesus has given me that gift this week. I am so thankful to have been able to go to Nashville and serve Him.”

“Missing my second family. Thank you guys for a crazy, loving, amazing time in Nashville. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us!”

“I spent a whole week creating beautiful relationships and serving the Lord with one of the best families out there, Thank you

Jesus!”

“This week at Nashville was great with helping and serving people in need, and meeting new people along the way.”

“We had some struggles throughout the week but we all focused on one thing- God.”

“I didn't believe I could get closer with my

church friends. I was so wrong.”

“I made so many new friends this year and have loved getting to know all of the younger kids! Definitely learned so much!”

Students will have another opportunity to turn their

faith into some sweat during the July 11-15 Local

Mission Week. We are serving shut-ins from our

church and partnering with local organizations to

benefit low-income families and homeless

individuals right here in central Indiana. Students

are encourage to work as many days as possible

with the flexibility to miss one or more days if they

have other obligations. $10 per day covers the

cost of lunch and work supplies.

Youth Renovation Update

The Youth Renovation Team has been hard

at work. Meeting on a regular basis, some

of the items the group has been working on

are:

A list of potential youth volunteers has been compiled

A communications plan is being developed

A grow group plan is being developed

Plans for a 7-year youth curriculum are under way

Wednesday Night Worship started June 15 and

will occur every Wednesday from 7-8:30pm

through the start of school. This is a weekly

connection to adults, peers and God. We will

enjoy the relaxed atmosphere around the fire pit

and take a couple of “road trips” as well.

Rain, Rain, Go Away… naaaah. The Youth and their leaders made the most of a Wednesday Night Worship that got moved into the church due to rain… an impromptu game of “Human, Hungry, Hungry, Hippos”

Join them this Wednesday for another fun adventure!

Kudos to the Youth Ministry Team who came out

early on the 4th of July to assist parade attendees

with parking at Carmel UMC. This annual fundraiser

for the Youth Ministry is a free-will donation. The

Youth were able to raise over $1100!! This money

goes directly into the Youth Ministry Fund.

New Director of Music Ministries

Dave Morton has a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Huntington University, a Master of Music in Conducting from Butler University, and an Education Specialist Degree from Ball State University. He is currently employed as Department Chair for the Performing Arts for Choir and Dance at Lawrence North

While using the arts as Dave’s principal tool, he attempts to unveil God’s presence and looks for the opportunity to share God’s relevance to all. Dave’s ultimate goal is that everyone will have an intimate, personal relationship with God and it is through music and the arts that he hears a strong call to help all connect with God and understand His presence in every aspect of their lives. With this in mind, Dave strives diligently to have an important impact on effective worship and music ministry, and considers it a privilege to work with the congregation and staff of the Carmel United Methodist Church.

Vision:

Carmel UMC Sports & Recreation Ministry exists to leverage sporting and recreational activities as a platform for members of the Carmel UMC family to build intentional relationships with persons without a church home toward the goal that they become connecting, growing and serving followers of Jesus Christ.

Every organization has to decide not only what they hope to accomplish but how they plan to do so. This is the final installment of a series to introduce the values that guide how we achieve the goal of more followers of Jesus through the relationships that develop in every SRM program. Thanks for sticking with us.

Sports & Rec Ministry Value #4

Success is measured by spiritual movement.

In sports, winning is typically a simple thing to define. However, in sports like boxing or gymnastics, there is a bit more room for judges to consider “artistic impression” and other subjective measures. As a ministry of Carmel UMC which is tasked with “making followers of Jesus Christ” (Matthew 28), Sports and Recreation has a high expectation to be influencing people in spiritual ways. We will not be able to base success solely on figures that can be summarized on a scorecard or spreadsheet. We must discern the ways that each program facilitates relationships that lead to spiritual interest and engagement.

Jesus reflected this value following one of his most spectacular and crowd attracting miracles: the feeding of the 5,000. If we read John 6 we discover that Jesus measured success in different ways than

we might expect. His focus on spiritual realities even meant that the crowd thinned out a bit from its original size and fervor.

While we believe that Sports and Recreation programs will attract people to Carmel UMC, we

also recognize that there must become a bigger reason for them to stay if we truly hope to complete the job of making disciples.

As people look for a place to belong and discover a relationship with Jesus, we will truly have reason to celebrate that God’s will is being done “on earth” at the corner of Rangeline and 126

th St, the heart of

Carmel.

Contact us at [email protected] to find out ways you can invest in people and have a front row seat to the transformation that God plans to do as a result.

Technology News! Carmel UMC recently rolled out the Pathway to all full-members and constituents. This secure, online database will give you access to people and group information from Carmel UMC. If you did not receive an email invitation, please email: [email protected]

There have been several questions about the security of your information in the Pathway. Church Community Builder, the parent company who owns the software that Carmel UMC has branded “the Pathway”, has taken extraordinary efforts to make sure your information is safe and secure. Here is an article direct from CCB about the measures taken to make sure your information is safe.

Some more FAQs:

Who has access to the system and my information?

The primary answer to this is: Pastoral Staff and you. The purpose of the Pathway is two-fold. Carmel UMC wants to give YOU the opportunity to connect with groups within the church, as well as other members of our church family. However, in order to see other people’s information, you have to connect with them as “friends”, and their privacy settings have to be set to “friends” or send them an email directly through the system. Your personal information is not viewable by others, unless they are an immediate family member. You can see all of the profile information for your immediate family (i.e. spouse, children).

Additionally, Carmel UMC wants to be able to engage with users to see how your discipleship pathway is progressing. This aspect is not in a “big brother” sort of way, but rather a “Brother or Sister in Christ” sort of way. It is important that people are encouraged from the very beginning of their relationship with Christ. The ability to take attendance at group events, classes, and/or activities, allows Pastoral staff at Carmel UMC to walk alongside you and guide you as needed.

What are the default privacy settings?

When the information from the previous database Carmel UMC used was merged, the only information that was made viewable by people with a login to the system, is gender, first and last name, and birth month and date (not year). The default has been changed to first and last name, and email address. If you want more information published, you can easily adjust your privacy settings.

Who received a login invitation to the Pathway?

It is true, there are over 4,000 people in the database for Carmel UMC, however, not everyone received an invitation to the system. Any person who walks through the door at Carmel UMC, attends a worship service, and fills out an attendance pad, is entered into the system. It is important that Carmel UMC follows up with guests and those who attend regularly; that is why the number is so high.

In order to receive the initial invitation to the Pathway, the user’s designation must have been either: 1. a full-member or constituent, who has attended at least 3 times since August 2015 or 2. a donor to Carmel UMC (if donations are made to Carmel UMC, you can download your giving statement at any time) or 3. a student over the age of 15 who is active in the Youth Ministry Program. Future logins will be given to individuals as their attendance reaches a milestone and/or if a login is requested and the individual is active at Carmel UMC.

Who can see my financial information?

Donations to Carmel UMC are very private and personal. The only people who can see your financial information are YOU, the Senior Pastor, and the Financial Secretary for Carmel UMC, Elizabeth Shiverdecker.

Can I Opt-Out of the system?

The best answer for this is, no. Again, the Pathway’s primary purpose is for the Pastoral Staff to be able to see attendance at events, and to make sure that all of our programs are active and fulfilling the church’s vision of Connect, Grow, and Serve. If you feel as though you would rather not have any of your information viewable, you are welcome to change your privacy settings in the system. It is not required that anyone login to the system and use it. Carmel UMC hopes that you find the Pathway to be a useful system and a great way to Connect, Grow, and Serve.

If you have any questions about the Pathway that haven’t been addressed in this article or on the FAQ online, please don’t hesitate to email: [email protected].
