Update on "Jesus Came so We Could Go" Mission

We want to say a huge thanks to all of those who helped make our Christmas mission "Jesus Came So We Could Go" such a wonderful blessing. Over the months of November and December we collected hundreds of items like toothbrushes, hygiene products, gloves, t-shirts and much more that were then sorted, organized and packed by volunteers and staff into care packages for the homeless.

These were then distributed by a team from Carmel UMC at Fletcher Place Community Center during their normal week to make breakfast for those in need on the Southeast Side of Indy.

The Rev. Jessi Langlie, the Executive Director at Fletcher Place, said this,

"What wonderful news! Thank you so very much for putting together the care packages for the homeless :) Thank you for

your work and for thinking of Fletcher!"

My Emmaus Walk

experience was

amazing. Although

everyone that

attends will tell you

the same about their experience. It is a chance to

connect with God, and allow Him to continue

shaping your life. I know when I went, I had no

idea what to expect which is typical. But also just

like everyone else, I am glad I went. The

experience changed me. I am challenged to start

and approach each day with my thoughts on God.

In Mark 8:33, we are reminded that Jesus can

clearly recognize good and evil. 'Jesus turned

around and looked at his disciples, then

reprimanded Peter. "Get away from me, Satan!"

he said. "You are seeing things merely from a

human point of view, not from God's."' Even

though Peter was not evil, Jesus could tell the

source of his words were from Satan. We do not

possess that level of discernment. Yet every day

since my Emmaus walk, I think about how the

grey areas in this world are really either dark or

light. I strive to know Jesus better, so that I may

be guided by the light, and avoid the dark.

CUMC 6:30pm, Room 122

Guest speaker, Nancy Chance, Executive Director, Good Samaritan Network

Please join CUMC’s Stephen ministry team to learn about the Good Samaritan Network. Our guest speaker

will be Nancy Chance. Nancy has always believed that cultivating a culture of doing good – the principle of the

Good Samaritan - would ultimately and significantly impact the residents of Hamilton County. Further,

community outreach lets the public know that no matter who you are, no matter where you live or work –

everyone can invest in the communities they live in. So that giving back is not just a social responsibility or

moral obligation, but quite simply, it’s just the right thing to do to meet people at their need!

Good Samaritan Network has grown and expanded its services to what has now become an intermediary

hybrid nonprofit charity status organization (a go-between or intermediate agent of one or more sources)

working uniquely with both clients and organizations to intermediate the needs of Hamilton County’s

underserved.

GSN’s passion is the hope of helping build better lives for people and is not limited to food and shelter

insecurities or financial instability - it reaches to the spiritual and everyday life, as well as education, job and

health issues.

Prayer Vigil on Good Friday

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.

We encourage everyone at Carmel UMC to

participate in our annual prayer vigil in order to

reflect upon the crucifixion and resurrection of

Jesus by connecting with God through prayer. The

prayer vigil will be held on Good Friday—March 25,

from 2:00-6:30 pm in the Chapel. The prayer vigil

will move to the Sanctuary following the Good

Friday service for an additional hour of prayer.

Whether you pray rarely or pray often, you are

invited to join. The prayer vigil will allow a quiet

place to reflect on Jesus’ great sacrifice on Good

Friday and help prepare our hearts and minds for

the Easter celebration ahead.

Prayer candles will be provided and Stephen

Ministers will be available if you would like someone

with which to pray. Communion will be offered for

those who wish to partake in the Sacrament, and

prayer cards from the prayer tree will be also be

available.

United Methodist Women, Stephen Ministry, and

the Wednesday Evening Prayer Group will host the

vigil, assuring the Chapel will be a conducive

environment for prayer and reflection.

We look forward to joining you in Sacrament and

prayer on Good Friday.

Prayer Tree in the Gathering

Place

Be sure to visit the

Prayer Tree in the

Gathering Place. All

are encouraged to

write a prayer request

on an available tag,

then hang the request

on the prayer tree. The

tree will be moved to

the Chapel during the

prayer vigil on Good

Friday, where

attendees will take a

tag off the tree and

pray for that specific prayer request. All Carmel

UMC members and guests are invited to

participate.

Each summer CUMC has day camps for children 3 years old to 5th grade throughout the month of July. All

camps are Biblically based but unite fun themes that kids love and the Bible together. Examples are Disney, American Girl, music, mission, safety and American Ninja Warrior. Kids are separated by ages and there is an opportunity for kids to stay all day for a small fee. We are currently putting together the camp schedule and deciding what camps to offer. Is there a camp you would like to lead (for monetary compensation) or is there a camp you would like your children or grand-children to attend? Can someone please figure out a way to have a chocolate camp!!! Or would you like to be one of the first to receive the camp schedule? Please email [email protected] and let us know your thoughts!

Let’s do life together! At Carmel UMC, we encourage everyone—adults and youth—to participate in a Grow Group, an intentional gathering of people who commit themselves to work together to become better disciples of Jesus Christ through Connecting, Growing, and Serving. Groups gather, learn about God and each other, support one another in the normal challenges of life, and work together to serve the community. If you are interested in participating in or leading a Grow Group, please contact John Kouns, Minister of Adult Discipleship, at [email protected].

From Our Congregation: “Grow Groups—Why

They Matter” by Sandy Phillips

Bob and I became part of a small group several years ago when Carmel UMC launched the Forty Days of Purpose all-church study. I think my first reaction to this “opportunity” was probably: “Every week!! Seriously, who has time for that kind of a commitment?” But with, I am sure, some spiritual nudging, we did sign up. I felt we could do that for 6 or 7 weeks. But at the end of the study our group was hooked…and what followed is a major part of our faith journey. The commitment, that seemed unrealistic several years ago, has become a time that we look forward to weekly. As a group we have studied God’s word, and we have also just talked and shared our lives with one another. We have laughed a lot, and we have cried, and oh yes, we have shared lots of food together. But most importantly, we have become family, and we continue to help each other grow in our love for Christ. I am so thankful this “opportunity” is encouraged and supported in our church.

in a college program, you are encouraged to apply for a scholarship through Carmel United Methodist

Church. High school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Previous

recipients of this scholarship are not eligible to apply. Application forms are available in the church

office or on the CUMC website and have a submission deadline of Friday, March 25th

(before Carmel

Spring Break). Scholarship winners will be announced by May. If you have any questions, contact

any member of the Higher Education Committee or Ashley Edwards through the church office at 844-7275.

Information & Application Form Carmel United Methodist Church

Higher Education Scholarship Application Deadline: Friday, March 25, 2016

Complete & Submit To: Carmel United Methodist Church Office to Karen McTaggart Attn: Higher Education Committee

Carmel United Methodist Church established a scholarship fund in 1987. The purpose of the fund is to assist deserving church members who are pursuing advanced education at accredited colleges or universities in the next school year. Scholarship Application Forms are available in the Church Office and the CUMC website. Completed applications must be returned to the Church Office on or before Friday, March 25, 2016.

The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize students for their active church involvement and their display of leadership, community, and volunteer service. Although class ranking or GPA is not the primary requirement for the award, Carmel United Methodist Church believes that working to achieve a quality education is not just a job of an educational institution, but is the primary occupation of every student.

To be considered for this award, the candidate must complete this application form and return it along with all required attachments by Friday, March 25, 2016. The packets must be submitted to Karen McTaggart in the front office. Do not submit them to any other staff members so the packets can be logged appropriately. Eligibility requirements are outlined on the verification section of the application. No exceptions are allowed.

Scholarships usually have ranged from $100 - $1,000. However, the exact amount and number of grants are determined annually, according to the number and quality of the applicants, and the amount of funds available for distribution.

Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by the end of May. Scholarships are awarded once a year in July preceding the academic year for which the student plans to enroll, and will be sent to the Bursar of the college or university. The scholarship is then applicable to tuition, room and board, and any fees.

Thank you for your service to others and for being an example to your peers. The Higher Education Committee of Carmel United Methodist Church is proud to recognize future leaders with this award, and congratulate you for your interest in becoming a candidate. Best of luck to you! If you have any questions about the application, please contact the Higher Education Committee members through Ashley Edwards, Youth Assistant, at 317.844.7275 or [email protected].
