Lent is…

a Christian season on the Christian calendar

Ash Wednesday to Easter

when the amount of sunlight lengthens as we move toward Easter

a season for prayer and meditation; time for honest reflection on the condition of our lives and our sinfulness

I think that we can understand our sinful nature in terms of computer settings. As humans born after the events recorded in Genesis 3, our default setting toward God is rebellion, “I want my own way!” God had originally intended Himself to be our default setting.

When I try to “do” better in my own way and with my own plan in the name of being a better Christian, I am merely overriding the default setting of God for the moment. But after some time, that gets exhausting and I give in. I revert back to my default setting, “Ok God, I am back, You are my default setting”.

I must somehow “un-choose” my default setting of rebellion. I must learn to call out my sinful actions, inactions, motivations, beliefs, grudges, or prideful thoughts and then choose to identify myself with Christ.

This is what Lent is to be for us. It is a time for us to get back to having God as our default setting. He is to be our identity.

This Lent I hope that you will do life a little differently and at a different pace, a slower pace; releasing your rebellion and relinquishing the thought that you are in control and accept that the better default for life is God’s grace, His love, His patience, and His words of truth. All of us have varying changes we need to make to get there. I know that I do too. When we talk about discipleship, this is an important piece of growing discipleship for all of us. This truly is an opportunity for us to GROW!!!

John Kouns Minister of Adult Discipleship John is relatively new to the Carmel area, having moved from Phoenix, AZ in mid2013. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in psychology and a minor in religion. While in Phoenix, John served for

ten years as the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church. John’s wife, Katie, is the new Head of Choirs at Carmel High School and they have two children, Charlotte and Lydia, who attend Prairie Trace Elementary. They also have a pug named Violet who likes to sleep, eat, and spin in circles. They are thrilled to be in Carmel and are excited to be more involved in community events. In his spare time, John loves to camp, sail, hike, mountain bike, or do pretty much anything outdoors. He loves spending time with his family and traveling—usually with a pop-up trailer attached to the back of the family minivan. John is excited and humbled to be part of the dynamic staff at Carmel UMC and is looking forward to developing meaningful relationships within the Carmel community.

ESL @ Carmel UMC is off to a great start in 2016 as we welcome immigrant students from Venezuela & Iran. Diversity is a gift to our community & one goal is new friends to experience love of Jesus Christ through our volunteers. You do not need prior teaching experience if you are a native English speaker. We currently have 29 students from 7 different countries learning English. No experience is required to volunteer...... just a love of God's people. If you are interested in learning more, please contact: [email protected] or Barbara Krueger @ 317-903-7007 or [email protected] or

My Emmaus Walk

experience was

amazing. Although

everyone that

attends will tell you

the same about their experience. It is a chance to

connect with God, and allow Him to continue

shaping your life. I know when I went, I had no

idea what to expect which is typical. But also just

like everyone else, I am glad I went. The

experience changed me. I am challenged to start

and approach each day with my thoughts on God.

In Mark 8:33, we are reminded that Jesus can

clearly recognize good and evil. 'Jesus turned

around and looked at his disciples, then

reprimanded Peter. "Get away from me, Satan!"

he said. "You are seeing things merely from a

human point of view, not from God's."' Even

though Peter was not evil, Jesus could tell the

source of his words were from Satan. We do not

possess that level of discernment. Yet every day

since my Emmaus walk, I think about how the

grey areas in this world are really either dark or

light. I strive to know Jesus better, so that I may

be guided by the light, and avoid the dark.

Karl Maierhofer was presented with a plaque that was

awarded to T&W Church Solutions for the recent

“Making Room” renovations at Carmel United

The Making Room project was a huge undertaking for

the entire team at Carmel UMC and Karl, as Head of

Trustees at the time, took on more than his share of

responsibilities. Sharing this award with

Karl was just a small token of the

appreciation that Carmel UMC in its

entirety has for Karl’s dedication to the

Church and to the completion of the

Each summer CUMC has day camps for children 3 years old to 5th grade throughout the month of July. All

camps are Biblically based but unite fun themes that kids love and the Bible together. Examples are Disney, American Girl, music, mission, safety and American Ninja Warrior. Kids are separated by ages and there is an opportunity for kids to stay all day for a small fee. We are currently putting together the camp schedule and deciding what camps to offer. Is there a camp you would like to lead (for monetary compensation) or is there a camp you would like your children or grand-children to attend? Can someone please figure out a way to have a chocolate camp!!! Or would you like to be one of the first to receive the camp schedule? Please email [email protected] and let us know your thoughts!

In case we’ve never met, my name is Kevin Andrews and I’m am the newly appointed Director of Sports and Recreation Ministries. If my name rings a bell, it is because I have been on staff since 2007 in the Youth Ministry department and now have the privilege of adding to my responsibilities.

You may be wondering what Sports & Rec will look like in 2016. I’m still working out the answer to that question as well but here are a few things I know for sure.

1. The vision of SRM (Sports & Recreation Ministry) will continue to be focused on spiritual growth. I believe that Sports and Rec can be a fantastic first interaction for individuals who are not connected to God and/or a church family. It is this reason that has motivated me to take the position since I believe it is positioned well to make a significant impact as we strive to help all participants develop a personal relationship with Jesus and move them from an initial connection to ongoing growing and serving as His followers.

2. SRM will be re-tooled for accomplishing the vision. I am excited to implement some creative new twists with the intention that we continue to pursue long-term assimilation into the body of Christ. Some of these ideas will likely require a bit more commitment on the part of those already connected to Carmel UMC, but I believe that as we work together as a church family, we will become more effective. As with anything new, some of these ideas are likely to fail but our long-term success is worth the risk of some short-term setbacks.

3. SRM programming will be scaled back. Scheduling fewer events will not only take into consideration the reduction in staffing hours that are designated for SRM leadership but also the reality that in order to leverage each opportunity to the max, we will need to shift some of our energy to the relationship building and “next steps” components of the program.

4. Volunteers will be critical to the success of Carmel UMC through the ministry of SRM. If you have a heart to help others experience Jesus in a fresh way, I’d love to talk to you. The reality is that it is not as important to me that you are a “sports” person as much as that you desire to see the vision of Carmel UMC to become a reality for those who don’t yet belong to the family of God. I am confident that if you have a heart for Jesus and willingness to serve, I can find a role for you to play in the new Sports & Rec Ministry. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] or call the church office at 317-844-7275.

Jan Lefton went on Winterblast this year as a first time youth chaperone and shared with us some of her thoughts on the experience:

I don't even know where to begin! What a powerful weekend!

I was fearful that at my age I wouldn't be able to relate to the young people. I related well to them when I worked in school.....just as I did before I would have to listen, listen, and love them with our Lord's love! I still really care about the students, and that can't be faked....and they know it! I gave and received so much in return!

There was a love and acceptance not only for each other with the senior high group but so much mentoring with them to the junior high aged students. Ruthie even came over to the session with my girls' group after Sunday at the chapel. What she said had really impacted the three 7th grade girls in my small group! If you can use an "older, more mature lady with the spirit of a kid", I am your lady!

I have always said that the youth is not our church

for tomorrow.....but they are our church NOW!!!!!!

The maturity in Christ that so many of the youth have is exceptional for anyone at any age. Some students are easier to like than others, but they are all God's children and all deserve to be cared for and valued!

Intersect is a weekly Youth Group for Jr. & Sr. High students - Sunday nights starting at 5:15pm. Come worship, have a bible study, and enjoy dinner with your friends. Intersect is held in the Hub in the lower level of the Church.

Watch the Sunday Bulletin for dates when Intersect isn’t meeting.

A HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers who served

for the Youth’s Best Winterblast Weekend YET! Nearly

100 youth and adults ventured up to Michigan for this

God-filled weekend. Events like this can’t happen

without dedicated adults to participate, witness, share,

We have new grow groups starting up this spring semester. There are already 2 senior high boys groups, 1 junior high boys group, 2 senior high girls groups, and 1 junior high girls groups. We are currently adding more grow groups for girls and have available spaces for the ones that are currently in existence. To get your student signed up, or for more information, please contact [email protected]. These group are where true, authentic transformation happens for our students.

FEBRUARY 28, 2016

This is our yearly opportunity to lead worship in all the adult traditional services (8:30, 9:30 & 11am). We could use lots of student participation to make this happen and there are ways to be involved using a lot of different skills. Feel free to sign up for more than one service and you can mix and match what job you'd like to do at each.

We value the youth of our church, and we are committed to building a sustainable youth ministry that is going to have a deep impact. That’s why we are developing a game plan together to ensure that the future of our church is as great as it’s history. We have invited Ministry Architects to visit us on February 26-28. (Learn more about them at www.ministryarchitects.com.) Ministry Architects will spend the majority of their time listening to a variety of groups within the church through focused listening groups. We hope to see participation in those groups from a broad spectrum of parents, volunteers, youth and people who just love our youth. We want your insights, your frustrations and your dreams to be heard.

After spending 2 days in these listening groups (and taking copious notes), the Ministry Architects team will hunker down to write a report, sharing with us what they’ve heard about the youth programs – including assets, challenges, and how we compare to youth ministries around the country – and where it seems that God might be taking us next. On Sunday, February 28, the report will be presented to the congregation in the Youth Center (The Hub), laying out specific recommendations and a blueprint for how to move forward. If you would like to be part of this process and have your voice heard, please contact Scott McDermid at [email protected]

Let’s do life together! At Carmel UMC, we encourage everyone—adults and youth—to participate in a Grow Group, an intentional gathering of people who commit themselves to work together to become better disciples of Jesus Christ through Connecting, Growing, and Serving. Groups gather, learn about God and each other, support one another in the normal challenges of life, and work together to serve the community. If you are interested in participating in or leading a Grow Group, please contact John Kouns, Minister of Adult Discipleship, at [email protected].

From Our Congregation: “Grow Groups—Why

They Matter” by Sandy Phillips

Bob and I became part of a small group several years ago when Carmel UMC launched the Forty Days of Purpose all-church study. I think my first reaction to this “opportunity” was probably: “Every week!! Seriously, who has time for that kind of a commitment?” But with, I am sure, some spiritual nudging, we did sign up. I felt we could do that for 6 or 7 weeks. But at the end of the study our group was hooked…and what followed is a major part of our faith journey. The commitment, that seemed unrealistic several years ago, has become a time that we look forward to weekly. As a group we have studied God’s word, and we have also just talked and shared our lives with one another. We have laughed a lot, and we have cried, and oh yes, we have shared lots of food together. But most importantly, we have become family, and we continue to help each other grow in our love for Christ. I am so thankful this “opportunity” is encouraged and supported in our church.

Calling All Graduating Seniors or College Students… Scholarship Application Available!

If you are a member or have attended Carmel United Methodist Church for three years, and will be enrolled

in a college program, you are encouraged to apply for a scholarship through Carmel United Methodist

Church. High school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Previous

recipients of this scholarship are not eligible to apply. Application forms are available in the church

office or on the CUMC website and have a submission deadline of Friday, March 25th

(before Carmel

Spring Break). Scholarship winners will be announced by May. If you have any questions, contact

any member of the Higher Education Committee or Ashley Edwards through the church office at 844-7275.

Information & Application Form Carmel United Methodist Church

Higher Education Scholarship Application Deadline: Friday, March 25, 2016

Complete & Submit To: Carmel United Methodist Church Office to Karen McTaggart Attn: Higher Education Committee

Carmel United Methodist Church established a scholarship fund in 1987. The purpose of the fund is to assist deserving church members who are pursuing advanced education at accredited colleges or universities in the next school year. Scholarship Application Forms are available in the Church Office and the CUMC website. Completed applications must be returned to the Church Office on or before Friday, March 25, 2016.

The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize students for their active church involvement and their display of leadership, community, and volunteer service. Although class ranking or GPA is not the primary requirement for the award, Carmel United Methodist Church believes that working to achieve a quality education is not just a job of an educational institution, but is the primary occupation of every student.

To be considered for this award, the candidate must complete this application form and return it along with all required attachments by Friday, March 25, 2016. The packets must be submitted to Karen McTaggart in the front office. Do not submit them to any other staff members so the packets can be logged appropriately. Eligibility requirements are outlined on the verification section of the application. No exceptions are allowed.

Scholarships usually have ranged from $100 - $1,000. However, the exact amount and number of grants are determined annually, according to the number and quality of the applicants, and the amount of funds available for distribution.

Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by the end of May. Scholarships are awarded once a year in July preceding the academic year for which the student plans to enroll, and will be sent to the Bursar of the college or university. The scholarship is then applicable to tuition, room and board, and any fees.

Thank you for your service to others and for being an example to your peers. The Higher Education Committee of Carmel United Methodist Church is proud to recognize future leaders with this award, and congratulate you for your interest in becoming a candidate. Best of luck to you! If you have any questions about the application, please contact the Higher Education Committee members through Ashley Edwards, Youth Assistant, at 317.844.7275 or [email protected].
