Five costly misconceptions

1. You should wait as long as possible before cleaning your carpet. No! Dirt is an abrasive; so every time you step on your carpet you grind it into the carpet fibres. This cuts your carpet as surely as if you’d used a knife; the cutting action causes your carpet pile to wear out faster. It follows that a clean carpet will outlast a dirty one. Of course regular vacuuming will help but by itself it is not enough. So the longer you put off having your carpet professionally cleaned the more likely it is that damage will occur and the greater likelihood of an early replacement and general upheaval. 2. The only reason to have the carpets cleaned is to remove the dirt. No! As you probably know outdoor air contains an array of pollutants; pollens, fungus, bacteria, air pollution, cigarette smoke, car exhaust fumes and much, much more.

When you enter your home you carry these pollutants in with you via your clothing, footwear, skin and hair. Not surprisingly then these chemicals and toxins end up in your carpet. Allergies, asthma, emphysema and other respiratory problems can be triggered or even made worse as a result of the poor air quality of the indoor environment 3. One method of carpet cleaning is as good as another.

No! Each situation will determine the most effective type of carpet cleaning to employ and this will depend upon the fabric that the carpet is made from. It is therefore extremely important to know beforehand how and why a particular method is to be employed and what the outcome of the clean is likely to be in terms of the resulting presentation and hygiene. The most important aspect is to ensure your carpet cleaner is fully qualified as an IICRC

Page 5: The Consumers Guide to a Healthy Home - Telnic Image … · The Consumers Guide to a Healthy Home ... Finding and choosing a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning ... More good

certified technician and the company itself is a member of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA). 4. Having the right equipment is all a company needs to clean your carpets properly. Not True! Many companies own good equipment but the employees who put it to use are not properly trained or qualified. More good reasons to choose your carpet cleaner carefully. Check for the appropriate qualifications and ask to see certificates. As mentioned above the minimum requirement should be to be Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certified (IICRC) and a member of the NCCA. These qualifications are arrived at by formal written examination and hands on experience. 5. The company that offers the lowest price is the company you should hire.

No! We’ve seen so many problems arise from super-low bid companies that we suggest you think twice about hiring the company with the lowest quote. The two most common problems are: 1. The price may not be for the services requested and arranged. The company hired may only be equipped to remove dirt from your carpet. Yet you wanted the complete removal of pollutants such as dust-mites and their allergen, pollen, fungus etc. 2. The price advertised may not be the price you pay! Many home owners have learned from hard experience that the low price they saw advertised lasted until the carpet cleaner arrived at their home. Then under pressure they end up paying for a variety of add-ons (See Bait and Switch tactics page 5)

If you do replace them then your programme will cover the new furnishings exactly where the old ones left off. I’m sure you must be thinking, how can they possibly afford to give so much away and still remain in business? Thanks for the thought but, we’re thinking long term and anticipate that you’ll want to keep your programme running for a few years and maybe add other items to it along the way. Plus we get to know all about your furnishings; how to best look after them and so our job is made that much easier. Our company also gets to build up a strong base of clients with similar concerns and this supports our longer term future. It allows us to better to plan the way ahead, invest in newer technology, equipment and training for our staff. So you can see that both parties greatly benefit from the Care Free Maintenance Programme™, it’s a win, win situation. To get started all you have to do is complete and sign a simple agreement form, work order and standing order and we’ll take care of the rest.

A Typical example might be: A carpet cleaning with protector costing £120.00

Then £10.00 per month, with a free highlight clean in 6 months time, 2 free emergency spot removal visits (if required) and a full clean in 12 months with a further application of carpet protector.

Which method cleans Best?

There are two primary methods of carpet cleaning; ‘dry’ cleaning and hot water extraction. Both methods use water to a greater or lesser extent some of these methods are outlined below. We use each of the systems described below. Thermadry - This unique process combines the superior results of a wet cleaning system with all the benefits you’d expect from a dry- cleaning system - carpets are dry within the hour. Thermadry cleans, sanitises (hospital grade disinfectant), deodorises and applies a DuPont Teflon carpet protection, if required. It is guaranteed not to shrink your carpets. It is also environmentally friendly; soil-attracting sticky residues are history. It is a very quiet system. Absorbent pad - Primarily used for maintenance work especially in commercial settings or to assist with the removal of remaining moisture following a wet clean.

The carpet is pre- sprayed with a shampoo, then an absorbent wool pad is placed under a rotary machine and ‘played’ over the surface of the carpet, absorbing the soil as it moves along. The pads are changed frequently and as required. Dry, absorbent powder - The dry-compound method spreads moist, absorbent powder across the carpet this is then agitated between the fibres into the soil. When dry it is removed using a vacuum cleaner. A useful method when other water based methods would cause shrinkage or dye migration. Hot water extraction - A hot water cleaning solution is forced under pressure into the carpet pile and is immediately vacuumed away (the nearest we can get to a washing machine cycle). A very powerful system which can only be used effectively in qualified hands and when safe to do so. Drying times may be extended when smaller, portable machines are used.

Mistakes to avoid when

Choosing a carpet cleaner based on equipment alone

No question, your carpet cleaner needs first rate equipment but, he also needs something else. He needs employees who are skilled at operating the equipment. For instance; many companies have powerful hot water extraction machines but very few companies ensure that their employees go on a formal course of instruction in their specific use. The best way to ensure that the carpet cleaner’s employees have been trained properly is to ask to see written proof of the company’s and the employee’s Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Choosing a carpet cleaner based on price Low price might be a problem in three ways: (1) Low prices are the bait that attracts the phone call. Once the cleaner gets into your home you are pressured into a much more expensive job. (2) Low price is usually for single

process cleaning. When this is explained the consumer will usually opt for the more thorough dual-process clean and so the price goes up, usually by quite a bit. Choosing a carpet cleaner based on a single telephone call. Instead, invite the person to your home and ask for a detailed, written quotation. You’ll know exactly what is being recommended and most importantly, why! It will allow you time to think and decide what’s best for you. Choosing a carpet cleaner that doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee. In our view every carpet cleaning company should be accountable for its work and if you don’t receive what was agreed up front then you shouldn’t have to pay. Not all carpet cleaners offer a guarantee or where they do it is usually “limited” to some degree. Where a guarantee is offered make sure you it is included, in writing, with his written quotation.

Page 17: The Consumers Guide to a Healthy Home - Telnic Image … · The Consumers Guide to a Healthy Home ... Finding and choosing a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning ... More good

choosing a

Carpet Cleaner Choosing a carpet cleaner who isn’t certified by the IICRC

Assuming your carpet cleaner isn’t a close friend then you may not know whether he has the breadth of experience and/or knowledge that is required to make your carpets and furnishings clean and healthy and looking great once more. IICRC qualified individuals have all the training and experience necessary to know what and more importantly what not to do. They are in possession of formal qualifications won through formal examination and ongoing study. They are required to keep their accreditation up to date and encouraged to attain higher levels of advancement in their chosen career.

Choosing a carpet cleaner who isn’t a member of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) The NCCA is the foremost trade association in the UK for carpet cleaners who are dedicated to: (1) Being honest and ethical in their business practises. (2) Staying current on the latest carpet and furnishing cleaning methods and (3) Maintaining the highest levels of customer service and satisfaction. When you engage the services of a member of the NCCA you are making a very wise decision.

“Not all carpet cleaners offer a guarantee”

Do you want a clean and

Healthy Carpet? Which is more important to you: a clean carpet or a clean and healthy carpet? Yes, I assure you there is a difference, a very big difference! Each carpet cleaning method has advantages and disadvantages. Some methods will remove the dirt. Other methods will remove both dirt and grease. Still others will remove virtually all foreign material. And yes some carpet cleaning methods are more expensive than others. So if all you’re looking for is a cheap, rinse-the-dirt-off-the-top clean then may I respectfully ask that you call another company. If, however, you want to protect your health, the health of your family from the countless pollutants and dust mites that reside in your carpet, if you want to protect the financial investment in your furnishings then you are invited to call us. You’ll receive a written quote with no cost or obligation to yourself.

Ultimat

Customers who have bought an Ultimat cannot speak highly enough of them and we hope you will too. « Eliminates mud, water, oil,

How to Avoid carpet cleaning scams and rip-offs!

L UNBELIEVABLY LOW PRICES To some degree we are all attracted by low prices because we are keen to work within a budget. How ever some carpet cleaners use price as the ‘bait’ for their false and misleading advertising. They offer a cheap price; usually somewhere between £9.95 and £12.95 per room and then, once they are in your home, they ‘switch’ by pressuring you into buying ‘add-ons.’ It’s as if you were buying a car and found that the dealer was charging you extra for the tyres and steering wheel. Professional carpet cleaning is not cheap, as some unethical carpet cleaners would have you believe and for the unwary consumer it can prove to be a very costly and stressful exercise.

L BAIT AND SWITCH In addition to ‘switching prices’ they may switch the cleaning system. Hot water extraction is a ‘dual-process’ of shampooing or heavy pre-conditioning, followed by hot water extraction cleaning. Unfortunately, unethical carpet cleaners often use dual process as a bait-and-switch technique. First, they ‘bait’ you with a basic cleaning (single) process at an unbelievably low price. Then, when you call, they try to switch you to a more expensive dual process cleaning. If you are not taken in by this technique and decide to take them up on their original offer you’re likely to receive very poor workmanship as there is very little, if any, profit in it for them!

Looking after your newly cleaned surfaces

Okay, so your carpets are looking great and you might even be thinking about eating-off that fresh, newly cleaned ceramic tile or natural stone floor in the kitchen, it looks so good. What’s next? The question we are often asked is “how can I keep it looking like this for longer?” Well, the most obvious and effective way is to ensure that you keep to a daily, planned programme of maintenance. In its simplest form this might consist of regular vacuuming, perhaps, using an untreated dust mop and occasionally a barely dampened mop on your hard floors. To assist our clients to carry out these cleaning tasks more effectively we have created two FREE Client Information Sheets which are available to you upon request, more in the pipeline. They are for the maintenance of: 1. Carpets 2. Natural stone, ceramic tile and masonry. 3. Laminates and real wood floors (in the pipeline).

We have also sourced several very cost effective products to assist your efforts and protect your investment. Our client’s favourites are shown over the page. If you need help or advice or you are interested in a specialist product not currently available please call the office and we’ll do our best to help. Sorry products for the UK only.

I feel I have gained valuable peace of mind for the future and a better return on investment from my carpets. Mrs Lisa Webb, Mow Cop: A very good and professional company. Although my beige carpets are only 12 - 14 months old, we are renovating a property on our land and our driveway has only just been done. They were filthy and I didn’t believe they could be brought back to their new state. They were! A fantastic job! Mrs L Forbes, Wincle: Excellent…My Turkish rug was very, very dirty. Healthy Home returned it restored to it’s former beauty, much to my amazement and delight! Mrs Toni Watkins, Tytherington: Incredibly professional and knowledgeable. Bedroom carpet/en-suite carpet restored to as new condition. Problem stain removed which improved the overall appearance of the carpet.

What your neighbours have said about our work:

Lord and Lady Davies of Coity, Bramhall: Dear Sue and Gerard, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the excellent service you gave. The carpets look superb and we liked the fact that there was no mess and that they dried quickly. We would have no hesitation in telling other people about you and your very professional manner. Thank you very much! Mrs Deborah Newton, Rainow: A conscientious, trustworthy and enthusiastic company, which we would definitely do more business with. Badly stained quarry tile floor is restored to almost new. Our sparkling floor is the first step toward making our new house into a lovely home! Ms Barbara Webb, Bollington: Efficient, friendly, local. ‘Tracks’ eradicated, stone floor restored to original appearance. Mr Geoff Vickers, Timperley: I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the very impressive cleaning you have done on our hall, landing and stair carpet. The result was more than we could have hoped for. The carpet has been down for 17 years. Yvonne and I had talked about replacing but, since you came and did your bit the carpet really looks like new. As and when the circumstances arise I will have no hesitation in recommending you to my friends and relatives. Mrs Viv Grundy, Mottram St Andrew: Delivered a complete package of individual care and attention. Sue and Gerard have restored my carpets to their former glory saving me the time and expense of replacing them. The service provided is true value for money and I am thrilled with the results.
