While this code revision cycle is not receiving the fanfare or garnering the anxiety of the last, there are revisions and we all need to know what they are and the implications they will have on how buildings are designed and constructed. In addition, for the first time in it’s 20 year history there is an update to the ADA regulations and its companion ADA Standards for Accessible Design. John Raeber, FAIA, FCSI, CCS will give us an overview of the new changes breathing life into the codes in a way no one else can. You will not want to miss this informative and entertaining insight into the next wave of codes. Mr. Raeber has been educating architects, engineers, specification writers, and contractors about accessibility and codes for over 20 years. The California Building Standards Commission also put his skills to use as a consultant and educator for Title 24 accessibility compliance. ß ß ß CONTINUING EDUCATION: This program meets CSI/ CEN and AIA/CES criteria. “Lessismore,”saidafamousarchitect!Oneof myfellowarchitectsfromIllinoisandamemberof ourCSIchaptermentionedthatheenjoyed my last month’s president’s message,butitwasalittlelong.Thatremindedmeof thatfamousquote,first used by architect Ludwig Mies vanderRohetodescribehisaesthetictacticof arrangingthenumerouscomponentsof abuildingtocreateanimpressionof extremesimplicity.So,Irealizethat“lesscanbemore”andwillbeshorterwithmymessagethismonth.

Thehighlightof recentCSIexperiencesformewasattendingtheWestRegionConference,heldattheTenayaLodgenearthesouthentrancetoYosemiteNationalPark,October1–3.Mostof ourboardmembersattended,aswellasseveralothermembersandcommitteechairs.Somewillbereportingtheirexperiencesinthenewsletterandotherswillsharewithyouatfuturedinnermeetings.Iwillbewritingaseparatereportonthe

variousactivities,butwanttosayhowproud I am of our chapter’s member participation.

The Construction Specifier is one of myfavoritemagazinestoread,andseveralissuesarestackedonmynightstand,alongwithArchitecturalRecordandothers,toaheightthatchallengesstructuralvertical/horizontalwidth-to-heightallowableratios.Maybeonceamonth,attherequestof mywife,Milly,Ireluctantlydiscardafewandsaveothers.Shetoosays,“lessismore”andexplainsthatthepilemaybeaestheticallypleasingtome,butshehappenstothinkitisjustplain“clutter.”

Thisisreallyanunfortunatesituationsincetheregionmembershipdirectoryhasbecomesuchausefulmember benefit. This usefulness willbediminishedin2010,alongwiththemoreimportantfactthateach chapter’s membership will notbepresentedaccurately.Wewillmakeeveryefforttoavoidrepeatingthismistakenextyear.

Bynow,youhavereceivedyour2010WestRegionCSIMembershipDirectory.Contrarytoourdirectoryinpastyears,thisyeartherosterforeachchaptercontainsonlyhomechaptermembers.Thisisanunfortunatesituationsincemanyof usaremembersof multiplechapters.Asaresult,thepersonyoudinewithatyourchaptermeetingeverymonthmaybeamemberof yourchaptereventhough you don’t see them listed in the directory.Wesincerelyapologizeforthiserrorinproducingthedirectory.

ItseemstheproblemresultedfromincompletemembershipdataweprovidedtoMcGrawHill.ByouragreementwithMcGrawHill,itis CSI’s responsibility to provide McGrawHillwiththememberdatawhichtheyusetoproducethedirectory. As we’ve done in past years, IrequestedtheregionmembershipspreadsheetfromtheInstituteinMayandforwardedittoMcGrawHill.

Inotheryears,thisprocedurehasworkedwithonlyminorglitches.

The problem wasn’t brought to my attentionuntilneartheendof theproofing process when the Inland

CSIhascreatedanewmembershiprecruitmentcampaigntitled,Every1Counts,andwillbegranting$20worthof CSIbuckstoamemberthatbringsanewmember.Thesebuckscanbeusedtowardnextyearrenewaldues,CSIeducationprogram,oranypurchaseintheCSIStore.TherewillbemanyotherprizesandagranddrawingafterthecampaignendsJune30,2011.Inthiscase,lessisnotmore...moreismorebucksforyou!

Oneof myCSIhatsisHistoryof Fellows Chair for CSI’s College of Fellows.Assuch,Isearchforbackgroundtocreateorupdatethebiographies that are on the Fellows’ website,atwww.FCSInet.org.Thisoften is a difficult task even with new Fellows, who either can’t find the time,oraretoobashfultowritetheirownbiographies.Gettinginformationgrows more difficult as time goes on, andbecomesarealchallengeforthoseFellowswhoarenolongerwithus.

Whilemysearchgenerallymovesalongatapacedictatedbyworkatoffice and at home, some events, such as each year’s elevation of new Fellows,notableachievementsof acurrentFellow,orthepassingof aFellow,inspiregreatereffort.OnesuchincidenceoccurredinFebruaryof thisyear, when Joy Davis notified me that acollectionof threeCSImedals-forPresident,PastPresident,andFellow-werebeingauctionedoff one-Bay.

PuttingonmySherlockHolmeshat,Itriedtodeducewhothemedalshadbelongedto.Theadindicatedthatallof themedalswerefrom1985orearlier,soIstartedwiththelistof past presidents. An obvious first step wastodeletethosewhosepresidency

orFellowshipcameafter1985;ItheneliminatedthosewhowerenotFellows(thereareafew),and,assumingthatalivingmemberwouldnotsellthosemedals,limitedmysearchtothoseFellowswhohadpassedaway.

Theresultwasashortlistof twenty-twonames.IwasabletodeterminefromtheadthatthesellerwasinMissouri, but it wouldn’t necessarily followthattheoriginalowneralsowasfromMissouri,soIsetthatasideforthemoment.However,becausetheadvertisedcollectionof medalsdidnot include an Honorary Member’s medal,Imadeafatalmistake,andeliminatedHonoraryMembersfromthelist,whichwasreducedtosevennames.

Iwastemptedtoputinabid,butdecided it would be better if an officer of theCollegeof Fellowsdidthebidding,andstartedaconversationwithJimRobertson,Collegeof FellowsChancellor,BobKenworthy,COFBursar,andDickRobinson,COFChancellor.WeagreedthatBobwouldsubmitbidsonbehalf of theCollegeof Fellows,andthat,ratherthanraiseinterestbybiddingearly,he

Isentane-mailtotheseller,askingwhosemedalstheywere,andwastoldthattheybelongedtoRobertVansant.(VansantwasanHonoraryMember,butforsomeunknownreason,thatmedalwasnotincludedinthecollection offered for sale.) The seller’s responsewasespeciallyinterestingtome,asRobertVansantisoneof thenamesIrememberedfrommyearlydaysasanarchitect.Hewroteamonthly article titled “Vansant’s Law” inA/EConceptsinWoodDesign,whichwasalwaysinterestingandeducational. As I recall, each month’s articlediscussedalimitedsubjectandhow it was presented in specifications ordrawings.

RobertVansantisanexampleof onemeaningof FCSI-“futurecontinuedservice to the Institute.” He didn’t hangitupafterbecomingaFellow,butwentontoserveasInstitutePresident,andwrotemanyarticlestohelpothersbetterunderstandlegalconceptsrelatedtoconstruction.InadditiontoA/EConceptsinWoodDesign,hisarticlesalsoappearedinthe Construction Specifier, Consulting Engineer,theAWPAReporter,andWaterandWastesEngineering.

AnengineerandattorneyatBlack&VeatchinKansasCity,Vansantwasachartermemberof theKansasCityChapter,whichwasformedin1959.HebecameaFellowof theInstitutein1970,servedaspresidentin1973-74, received CSI President’s Plaques in1971and1972,andwasmadeanHonoraryMemberin1986,theyearafterhisdeath.

RobertVansantandGlenAblanalpwereinstrumentalinestablishingtheEngineersJointContractDocumentsCommittee(EJCDC).Vansantalso

workedwiththeAmericanWaterWorksAssociation,andservedaschairof theAWWAStandardsCouncil,andhereceivedtheNationalSocietyof Professional Engineers’ PEPP Award in1987.

Meanwhile,backattheauction,we saw a sudden flurry of bidding asthedeadlineapproached.Asitturnedout,oneof thebidderswasourownDennisJ.Hall,whohadseen the medals on e-Bay and didn’t wantthemtobelosttoCSI,buthesaidhehadbidasmuchashewasgoingto,anddroppedoutof thebidding.BobKenworthysubmittedthe final bid just before the deadline, winningtheauction.Afterward,hecontactedthesellertoaskaboutthemissing Honorary Member’s medal; alas,itseemstohavedisappeared.Bobmountedtherescuedmedalsinadisplaycase,whichwasexhibitedattheCSIboothinPhiladelphia.ThemedalshavesincebeendonatedtotheInstitute,andwillsoonbeondisplayat CSI’s main office, in Alexandria, Virginia.

Oneof themanyinterestingthingsaboutthistreasurehuntwaslearningwhatmetalsareusedforCSImedals.Whatarethosemetals?SilverforFellows,copperforpresidents,bronzeforformerpresidents,andgoldfordistinguishedorhonorarymembers.However,asformerInstitutepresidentGilmanHusaid,“Amedalawardedtoyouisonlyworththehonorthatgoeswith it. A medal purchased isn’t worth themetalitwasmadefrom.”

Ihavejustreturnedfromanotherfun-filled, fascinating, and fantastic WestRegionConference.TheFresnoChapterpulledoutallthestopsandputtogetheragreateventatYosemite.Aheartythankyougoesouttoallof thoseFresnoCommitteememberswhoworkedtirelesslytobringtogetherourRegionforagreatweekendof events,educationandexploring.Asalways,Ilearnedfartoomuchtopassoninasimplearticle,soIwillsticktothehighlightsinthisarticle:beautifulYosemite,InstituteHappeningsandtheNewMembershipCampaign.

Duringthesetougheconomictimes,itwashardtodecidetospendthemoneyandgototheconference,butIamsogladIdid.Iwilladmitthatitwasnotmy“CSIdrive”thatgotmetotheconference;itwasreallythelocationandgettingtoexploreYosemitethatdrewme.Iliveafewshorthoursawayfromthenationalparkandhavenevervisited;thiswasachancethatIcouldnotpassup.It

wasmorebeautifulthanIanticipated.AnselAdamssaiditbestwhenhenoted:

“Itisallverybeautifulandmagicalhere-aqualitywhichcannotbedescribed.Youhavetoliveitandbreatheit,letthesunbakeitintoyou.”

Thereisnothingthatcandescribethebeautyof thesceneryinYosemite.Itookover600photosandstilldidnotmanagetocapturetheawe-inspiring,soulliftingfeelingyougetwhenyouarestandinginit.Ihopeyouhavehadthechancetovisit.IknowIplantogobacksoontogetmoreof thesunandscenery ‘baked in’ to me.
