THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
A film released in 2005 Directed by Fernando Meirelles (129 min.)
Based on a book by John Le Carré
Starring Ralph Fiennes & Rachel Weisz
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
British diplomat Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes) meets the impulsive activist Tessa (Rachel Weisz), marries her quickly and takes her on diplomatic mission in Kenya. In a remote area of Northern Kenya, Tessa Quayle is found brutally murdered. Justin Quayle, a mild, low-level diplomat and a constant gardener, must investigate his wife's death, their relationship, and his own heart. In flashbacks, we see them meet, marry, and fall in love; we follow her in the streets and clinics of Nairobi, usually accompanying Arnold Bluhm, a Black doctor with whom she spent the night before her murder, and who, after robbers, is the prime suspect. Justin decides to investigate her death against the strong wish of his superiors to let the matter quietly disappear. He discovers a powerful mystery involving the members of the British High Commission and the not-so-savoury business practices of the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry. In the process of learning the secrets of his powerful enemies, Justin must learn all of his wife's many secrets as well. Using his privileged access to diplomatic secrets, he will risk his own life, stopping at nothing to uncover and expose the truth.

THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA

Step 4 : check your hypotheses then listen to a short passage (from 16.24 to 16.53)
You can get these answers probably without asking precise questions / students understanding key words and grasping
the meaning from the situation and a few words only.
How many parts ? 2 : 2 conversations
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
First conversation :
Who’s speaking ? What about ? the medicine he gave the woman with the baby
What’s the doctor’s answer ? no medicine from the
government clinic
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
Second conversation * Characters ? + Jomo * What’s she asking him ? if he had his tests. Answer ? no * What’s the doctor’s worry ? if the woman is HIV positive, he’ll probably catch Aids (a catching / contagious disease) * The black man’s reaction ? evades the question / says his boss is very particular about being on time for work * What does it show ? more important things to do : living for today / providing for the family / living on a day-to-day basis

Séquence de Seconde
Une étude de cas pour le thème
« Dynamiques urbaines et Environnement urbain »
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
Le programme de géographie de Seconde
l’explosion urbaine
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
l’environnement urbain

Anticipation
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
Urban growth in Africa (Africa, Kenya, Nairobi)
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
Urban growth in Africa

TASK – GROUP 1
1) Locate Kenya and the city of Nairobi and report these locations on map 1. [locate Nairobi with a small dot and write down the names of both country and city, using different size of letters (capital/small)] 2) Give a definition of the “national level of urbanisation” (in your own words). 3) Which parts of Africa are the most urbanised today? (Justify your answer precisely.) How many countries have a level of urbanisation higher than 70%? 4) Around 50% of the world population live in cities. Would you say that the average level of urbanisation for Africa is higher or lower than the world average? Justify your answer using information from the map. 5) Name the most populated cities in Africa today and give their population. In which countries are they located? What are the urbanisation rates for those countries? 6) What is the national level of urbanisation for Kenya?

TASK – GROUP 2
1) Locate Kenya and the city of Nairobi and report these locations on map 1. [locate Nairobi with a small dot and write down the names of both country and city, using different size of letters (capital/small)] 2) Give a definition of the “national level of urbanisation” (in your own words). 3) In which parts of Africa will the increase in urban population be the highest in the near future? (Justify your answer using the national urban growth rates.) 4) Which country will have the lowest urban growth rate? 5) Name the most populated cities in Africa in 2015. In which countries are they located? How will their population change from 2000 to 2015? What is the projected urban growth rate in each of these countries? What relation can you establish between the 2 figures? 6) What is the projected urban growth rate for Kenya?
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA

Urban growth in Kenya
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - KIBERA
Clip from Chapter 2 (14’02-17’45)
