Acts 10:25–26, 34–35, 44–48 Ps 98:1, 2–3, 3–4, 1 Jn 4:7–10

Jn 15:9–17

Peter's visit to Cornelius's house in Acts is significant because Cornelius will be the first to join the commu-nity of believers. Their paths crossed as a result of divine intervention so that Cornelius might become a follower of Jesus. Peter's role in baptizing Cornelius lends credibility to the act, in that Peter is seen as the leader of the apostolic band. That the Holy Spirit de-scended on Cornelius and his household (v 44) con-firms that this shift in the missionary activity of the church is sanctioned by God.

The writer of the First Letter of John reinforces Je-sus's message at the Last Supper by encouraging his audience to "love one another" (v 7). Our love for God is in response to the fact that God first loved us and sent Jesus to die for our sins. God redeemed a broken world by allowing his Son to be broken for us.

Jesus's command of love is one he has been teach-ing by example through his ministry. His upcoming death is the ultimate example of what it means to love another, but before he departs he issues the command of love to his disciples. Because God loves us, we are called to love each other. This is Jesus's message. Jesus's command to "remain in my love" is an invitation to an ongoing relationship between us and God. Like the branches and vine in last week's readings, we are called to remain connected to Jesus and draw our life from him.

For reflection: Many people say they would come to church if they were invited by a friend. Is there some-one in my life who can be brought closer to God by my invitation? How have I experienced God's love in my life? How does God's love for me enable me to love others?

Planning to Marry?Planning to Marry?Planning to Marry?Planning to Marry? The Diocese requires that cou-ples begin preparing for their marriage in the church at least six months prior to their wed-ding date. Couples must con-tact Father Ed to get started. The next marriage preparation session will be Saturday, July 28th from 10 AM to 5 PM. Couples can contact Missy and Tom to register: [email protected] or 374-2004.

The National Catholic Society of Foresters, Our Lady of Help Court 865 had a bakeless bake sale the weekend of March 3-4. Thanks to your generosity we collected $2,355. The home office in Mount Prospect donated another $1,000 for the matching fund pro-ject. Last weekend the checks were presented to the Pro-ject Love Food Pantry, at the Cedar Lake Methodist Church. They were very appreciative of the dona-tion. Thank you Holy Name parishioners for all of your donations. For the second year, Holy Name participated in a bowling league at Stardust in Dyer with Holy Shep-herd Church. It was an enjoyable session in which many new friends were made during this activity. A very special thanks to Maureen Steinberg for chairing this year’s bowling league again this year. We don’t know what we would have done without her wonderful leadership.
