Is 66:18–21; Ps 117:1, 2

Heb 12:5–7, 11–13; Lk 13:22–30

Today’s reading from Isaiah speaks of the Lord gath-ering all the nations: “They shall come and see my glory”. Writing to the citizens of Judah who have re-turned from exile and are restoring the city of Jerusa-lem, Isaiah envisions a time when the world will be gathered in God’s holy city. In the next verses (not part of our reading), the focus shifts to a future time of glory and joy; God speaks of “the new heavens and the new earth which I will make” and to which all the people of the earth will stream. Our prophet, re-ferred to as Third Isaiah, anticipates a time when the Lord will renew all of creation. This theme is devel-oped further in the imagery of the Book of Revelation. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews reminds us that “whom the Lord loves, he disciplines”. Biblical Israel understood the Babylonian exile as God’s pun-ishment for their infidelity, from which they emerged with a stronger faith. We too are called to “make straight paths for [our] feet”, that we may be “healed” and walk in God’s ways. In the Gospel, Jesus encourages us to “enter through the narrow gate”. The path of discipleship is not al-ways easy. Eating and drinking with him is not enough; we must seek to do his will. Those who re-spond appropriately to the invitation will come not only from among the children of Abraham but also “from the east and the west / and from the north and the south”. This image reflects what Third Isaiah spoke of centuries earlier and reminds us that God desires that all people be saved. God’s love knows no bounds. For reflection: Do I understand that God offers sal-vation to everyone? Have I ever had difficulty enter-ing “through the narrow gate”? How did I respond to this difficulty? Community Garden NewsCommunity Garden NewsCommunity Garden NewsCommunity Garden News Our community garden tomatoes vines were so heavy we had to harvest over 200 tomatoes while they were still green. Here’s a tasty green tomato “no sugar” relish recipe in case you’re having the same bounty in your garden. This relish can be a great alternative to salsa, or mixed in guacamole. Stir it into re-fried beans or cooked rice for a side dish. For a spicy burrito filling, lightly brown ground turkey or diced chicken, add equal parts green tomato relish and water and simmer until thickened. Put it on a hamburger, serve with steak or chicken, or mix into home-fried potatoes. It can be eaten hot, cold or at room temperature. Enjoy! Farmgirl Susan’s “No Sugar” Green Tomato Relish 2 lb. green tomatoes, cored and chopped 1 lb. onions, chopped ¾ lb red peppers, cored and chopped ½ lb. tart cooking apples, like Granny Smith, cored and chopped 6 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ cup organic apple cider vinegar ( use 1 cup if canning this recipe) 1 Tablespoon salt 4 jalapeno peppers, cored, seeded if desired, and finely chopped 2 Tablespoons chopped cilantro 1 teaspoon ground cumin ( optional) Combine the tomatoes, onions, peppers, apples, garlic, vinegar, and salt in a large, nonreactive pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer uncovered, stirring occa-sionally, until thickened, about an hour. Stir in the jalapenos, cilantro, and cumin and simmer for 5 more minutes. Carefully puree the mixture in batches in a blender or use a stick immersion blender. Blend until chunky. Do not overmix; you don’t want it smooth.

This green tomato relish will keep in the refrigerator for several weeks. Makes about

3 pints. The recipe may be doubled; increase cooking time by 10-15 minutes.

Baby Bottle Ministry The Holy Name Baby Bottle Ministry is gearing up for the Fall Baby Bottle Drive.

With approximately 900 families registered in our par-ish, we have 300 bottles for distribution and a goal of $6000.00. Please help us to support the young wom-en in our area who choose life and motherhood by participating in the October Baby Bottle Drive. If you are interested in helping or would like additional information, please contact Sandy Lewis 219-696-0140 [email protected] The need is great; the laborers are few.

Bowling TimeBowling TimeBowling TimeBowling Time It’s time to dust off those shoes and bowl-ing balls! Holy Name will once again be joining Holy Shepherd in a fall bowling league at Stardust in Dyer. This is a non-sanctioned league – just for fun. So no worries if you are not a bowler or if you have never bowled before. The idea is just to have fun. Each team will consist of 4 bowlers. The league will bowl every other Sunday at 4:50 PM from Sept. 15th through the first week of May. If you cannot bowl on the appointed even-ing, you can either have a substitute bowl for you or you can “bowl out” before the game. If you are interested in joining us, please call Maureen Steinberg at 374-6634 or email [email protected]. Bowlers from last year should also let me know that they are returning. Please let me know by September 9th. The cost will be $12 per per-son. This does not include shoe rental. Please join us to have some fun and to meet new people! Friends are wel-come! I hope to hear from you soon.
