Bentley Bugle – Dec 2017 / Jan 2018Page 7

Pause For Thought - It’s that time of year when life seems to get more andmore frenetic. What do I buy Granny for Christmas? Have I organised enoughfood? Should I ask Uncle Joe for Christmas Day? It seems nothing but rushand problems. But what is Christmas really all about. Take a break from therush and think. If you take Christ out of Christmas you’re left with M & S! If weput Jesus at the centre of our preparations then we begin to get things inperspective. It is all about the birth of a baby, a very special baby, God’s Son.‘God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that those whobelieve in him might have eternal life.’ (John 3:16). We just have to rememberthat Christmas begins with Christ.

Gifts – Sadly this year West Villa are unable to accept Christmas gifts.Instead we will be supporting FIND (Families in Need), a local charity that helpsneedy people.Toys, drawing and colouring books, pens and pencils for the children and toiletries, hats, scarves, gloves and socks for all ages are all welcome. Please may we haveall donations by Sunday 3rd December (Christingle Service day) at the latest as theyneed the gifts by Monday 4th December if possible. If you can put your gifts in bagswith a tag saying who the gifts are suitable for (Child: 0-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-11 or Teenagerand male or female or Adult Male or Adult Female) that would help us enormously;but don’t worry if you can’t. They also accept tins of biscuits or sweets.West Villa is still pleased to receive bedding and towels as many people arrive withnothing but the clothes they stand up in. If you would like to help contact Sandra on310383 for either collection. Many thanks for your continuing help.

Mulled Wine, Coffee and Carols – will be held this year in the Village Hall onThursday 14th December, starting at 7.00 pm.Come and sing the old familiar Carols and hear some light-hearted ChristmasReadings. Enjoy a glass of mulled wine or fruit juice with coffee and mince piesin the interval. Entrance £3.

Samaritans Purse Shoe Box AppealDoreen & her team would like to thank everyone who participated in the appeal thisyear. We were very fortunate to receive lots of donations of gifts that enabled us tohave a morning workshop in which we managed to wrap and pack 40 boxes, a trulyamazing effort by all involved. We then received a further 7 pre-packed boxes that brought our total to 47. All theboxes were then displayed on the Altar at St Mary's Church where they were blessedin the Sunday morning service by Peter Day before they left for the distribution centreand the long journey overseas to the eager recipients, who will receive them withgreat excitement!A real community effort ,thank you so much everyone.Doreen Savage

November has been a busy month of activities in school with parents comingin to share learning, open evenings for next year’s intake, singing and sportingevents. The children have posed beautifully for their school photos – some ofthem for the first time, and some for their last time with us.Our Under 7s had a football tournament earlier in November which was the firsttime they had represented the school at a sporting event. They all did reallywell and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Some were even scouted by localfootball clubs! Not to be outdone, pupils from years 5 and 6 took part in a Tag Rugbycompetition at St Joseph’s School. We are particularly proud of the teamworkand support the children demonstrated towards each other.Bentley pupils enjoyed a spooktacular Hallowe’en disco with a great deal ofhelp from our fabulous parents who stayed to help out. three of the mums evendid face painting at the event! The whole of Bentley school walked to the War Memorial in Bentley on Friday10th November and, joined by members of the British Legion, held a servicethere to commemorate those who fought to keep our country free. We’ve had dress down days to raise money for BBC Children in Need and tokick start our Christmas festivities with decoration making! Some of the KS2children have been working hard in the Christmas Cake Club and are nearingtheir masterpiece completion. The children are now preparing songs andlearning scripts for their Christmas productions which will soon be upon us.We currently have 2 small, friendly cockerels at Bentley School in need of goodhomes. They are well handled (they have no choice having been picked up bychildren every day of their lives) and gentle natured and are free to goodhomes. They are a small breed with beautiful feathery feet. If you think youcould give one of our lovely chooks a place to call their own, please call theschool on 01473 310253.For more news and up to date information about the schools, please visit ourwebsite: http://www.bentley.suffolk.sch.uk/

CHRISTMASSY 1900-2016On the twentieth century's first Christmas & Queen Victoria's last it’s services hardlydiffered from those on many other Sundays. On 23rd December Vicar, Rev. R.Michael Jones, gave sermons at 11am and 3pm on verses from two of St. Paul'sletters, though at Christmas Day's only service besides administering HolyCommunion to 20 Parishioners he preached on part of St. Luke's account of Jesus'sbirth.Over half a century later at the first Christmas of Elizabeth II's reign services wereslightly more Christmassy. Carols - originally songs accompanying dances asopposed to hymns which praise God - were sung at evening services four days beforeand three days after Christmas. The near - absence of change is unsurprising. Bentley was a small, rural village(population 483 (1951 Census), 32 higher than in 1901). Its children between 1854and 1945 received all their education at Bentley (C of E) School. According to eightpast and present residents Sabbatarianism between the Wars expected Villagers onSundays to don their best clothes, attend church and/or Sunday school and not towork or play.In 1960 came significant change. At 11.45pm on Christmas Eve Rev. Matthew Jonesadministered Holy Communion to 75 Parishioners and at 7.30am on Christmas Dayto another seven. Four hours later worshippers sang carols at Morning Service.Bentley's large population increase, by over two-thirds to 808 between 1951 and1971, with many newcomers coming from and being employed outside Bentley partlyexplains the Church's responsiveness. The Anglican Church in general was alsostruggling with two problems. Between 1901 and 1961 Anglicans formed a decliningshare of the population, their Easter Communicant numbers rising at a quarter thespeed of the England - Wales population. In the same period the number of clergyalso declined, down over 20% to almost 18,750.Now jump forward to 2016. The clergy shortage is being dealt with by groupingparishes and ordaining women and part - time ministers. In 2011 Bentley with sixother parishes formed the North Samford Benefice, headed by a Rector, Rev. AnnetteShannon, and in Bentley the Mehen husband and wife team, Don (Assistant Priest,ex-Ordained Local Minister ) and Sandra (Reader) lead services.Bentley endeavours to increase support by embracing the popularity of Christmasservices. During December 2016 a decorated St. Mary's Church held a ChristingleService (attendees 78), a Carol Service (47), a Crib Service (97) and a Christmas DayCommunion Service (the 57 attendees included children, each encouraged to bring apresent just received). No surprise then on Queen Victoria's great great granddaughter's 91st Christmascongregations in Bentley Church were larger than usual and probably than atChristmas 1900 and many Christmases thereafter - the uncertainty is because onlyCommunicant numbers are recorded up to 1970..John Tombs - Village Historian

Bentley Stores

Bentley’s Community Shop is preparing for its second Christmas and is confident that thisfestive season will be as successful as the last. The shop’s team of volunteer buyers continues to seek the very best value for customersof the award winning community shop, which will be open over the festive season toprovide the last minute foodie purchases and the everyday essentials. The management committee, led by chairman Bob Feltwell, continues to look at opportuni-ties to improve the customer experience and is very pleased to announce they havesuccessfully secured funding to install a patio on the road side of the shop which will befurnished with a picnic table for people to use in the warmer weather to enjoy a cup of teaand coffee. The patio was paid for from the ‘Working Together Award’ from Suffolk CountyCouncil and will provide a social place for people to meet and chat and it will also make theshop more visible to passers-by which will hopefully encourage many more customers. The shop’s committee has also recently erected a community noticeboard on the wallbetween the shop and the pub which is available for everyone in the village to use by justleaving the notice in the shop and asking for it to go on the noticeboard. This was paid for,in part, with a Community Action Suffolk Award.Cementing its role as a significant community hub for the village, a new defibrillator hasbeen installed on the side of the shop which can be accessed by dialling 999 and askingfor the key code from the emergency services. The defibrillator has been donated under aBritish Heart Foundation scheme and will provide 24/7 support for those living in the village. The difference that the shop, and the neighbouring pub, has made to the village isremarkable and this continues to go from strength the strength. A team of loyal andenthusiastic volunteers is key to the success of the shop and the committee isalways looking for extra hands to help, if you can spare a few hours a week pleasecontact the shop on 01473 310182.If you haven’t used the shop before please do try to give it your support. BENTLEY W.I.

Wood carving was the subject of our October meeting. Mrs Winter told us how afterher family had finished university she became a mature art student learning woodcarving. She brought some of her tools for us to look at and described how to usethem. We admired the pieces of work she had brought with her and photos fromsome of her many commissions. Our speaker for November was unable to come, so member Janice Lee stepped inwith 15 minutes notice. She gave a very interesting talk about her career as StrategicLead, Education and Learning for the local authority. Thank you very much, Janice. Two members had learnt felting at a craft workshop, and another two membersreported on their two day break to London for a show and a tour of the Globe Theatreorganised by Suffolk Federation. The next meetings will be: -December 13th Christmas cooking. BENTLEY FIREWORKS

On October 28th, Bentley hosted their first fireworks display in many years. We werevery excited but also rather nervous about resurrecting this village event after solong. However, Bentley lived up to its community reputation with an overwhelmingturn out which we could not have predicted. The weather was kind to us, mercifully dry, and the forecast gales held off. Thefirework display was stunning, with feedback such as “can’t believe they were thisgood”, “as good as Christchurch Park only cheaper”. Thanks to Tim & David forputting on such a professional display for us. The bonfire was a welcome warmingbeacon enjoyed by everyone with the bonfire monitors doing a sterling job keepingit all under control and safe.It was another example of how Bentley pulls together as a community with awonderful team of volunteers helping to prepare and set up the event. Thanks somuch to Bentley school for allowing parking on their field, and what a wonderfulentrance it made all lit up with balloons! The teas, coffees and hot chocolate were alldone courtesy of Bentley Church, and the hot dogs and burgers donated by TheCase pub. Our BBQ volunteers did a sterling job, despite the queue never letting upuntil they were all sold out, something that was beyond all our expectations. So thanks to all the volunteers, to the Church, to the Case, Bentley school and thechildren who entered the Guy Fawkes competition, and to all those of you who cameon the night. It was another example of how good Bentley is at creating a wonderfullysuccessful community event for all the family. In the words of one of the spectators“what a truly magical evening”See you all next year.Jan Burton

BENTLEY COMRADES

Our October meeting focussed on Operation Jubilee, an alliedattempt during World War 2 to make a landing on the FrenchCoast on 19th August 1942. Craig Barker gave us an illustratedtalk on the operation that aimed at the beaches either side ofDieppe by mainly Canadian and British forces. Although the

operation was a disaster for the allies with over 4000 casualties, it had followedthe successful raid on St Nazaire and resulted in the capture of an Enigmacode breaking machine. Although two VCs were won, poor intelligence wasblamed on the failure and the lessons learned were later used in the planningof D Day.On 10th October a party of 18 members and friends visited Orford Ness wherethey enjoyed a guided tour of the island by a National Trust Guide, followed bylunch in Orford. Photo on front cover by Bob Mawkes. For our November meeting we featured Remembrance films. The first film wasin the series Great Escapes of World War 2 – The Siege of Kohima. This wasthe story of the major battle to prevent the Japanese from invading India asthey pushed through from Burma. The second film was Debt of Honour – TheCommonwealth War Graves Commission and featured the history and work ofthe commission from WWl through to today. To finish the evening we had anepisode of ‘Allo, ‘Allo - entitled Ribbing the Bonk.Bentley Comrades is a gathering of ex-service personnel and those interestedin the British Armed Forces. We usually meet on the first Wednesday of eachmonth in the Village Hall Committee Room, supply our own refreshments andeach make a contribution towards the hire of the hall. If you are interested injoining us please contact: - Ray Savage - tel. 311122Michael Anderton

Several parishioners laid their personaltributes in the form of wooden crosses. The names of the fallen were read by Bob Mawkes and the exhortation ‘For theFallen’ and Kohima epitaph were read by Michael Anderton.Amplified sound, the Last Post, 2 minutes silence and Reveille were providedby Bentley Comrades. There were over 80 parishioners, including children, who had braved the very cold wind, although the weather did remain fine onceagain.Michael Anderton (Photo on page 13 & 14)

Our Winter League Division 2 matches have come thick and fast with 6 games alreadycompleted. All four home fixtures have been won but not without some difficulties. The games against Bramford and Martlesham were very close and were both won6-4 and by two and four shots respectively.Against Whatfield we played very well to win 10-0 and likewise versus Burstall to runout 8-2 winners.Unfortunately our two away matches were lost, at Harkstead 2-8 and our Stuttonhoodoo continued as we suffered awful misfortune on two of the mats and werebeaten 0-10. Nevertheless we have accrued 32 points so far which is quitereasonable. Our last matches to complete the first half of the season are against Hintlesham,Rivers and East Bergholt.David Howe - Captain

CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE – PRACTICE UPDATE NOVEMBER 2017

Annual Flu ClinicsThis year we held four flu clinics and generally this was a successful approach. Wewere helped by members of the Patient Participation Group and had as manyclinicians as possible available to vaccinate patients. Thank you to all patients whoattended on one of the four days. These clinics are the most efficient way ofvaccinating a large number of patients and the new arrangements enable us to keepthe queues to a minimum. At the time of writing we have vaccinated 2389 adults and 261 children against flu,141 adults against pneumonia and 233 adults against shingles. We are also in theprocess of visiting all housebound patients to ensure they are vaccinated. This yearis forecast to be a bad year for flu so if you have yet to be vaccinated, and havereceived a letter confirming you are eligible, please contact the surgery to arrange avaccination with one of our nurses or health care assistant.Over the four clinics we also collected for Inspire, a local charity supportingdisadvantaged children. We raised an incredible £1044. On behalf of Inspire, thankyou for your generosity. More information on Inspire can be found athttps://inspiresuffolk.org.uk.Syria CollectionsDr Ayache is retiring at the end of December and has worked with charities since theconflict began to help Syrian refugees. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to takein donations of clothing and bedding. However, Dr Ayache would like to extend hissincere gratitude to all patients who have made a donation over the last few years.Your generosity has made a real difference.Training DaysJust a reminder that the practice will be closed from 1.00 pm on the following datesfor staff training:13th December 2017 (Wed)8th February 2018 (Thurs)On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions arepicked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recorded message will askyou to ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannot wait until the next day.Pete Keeble, Practice Manager

DOCTORS SURGERY ROTA

We continue to provide this service for those who are unable to get to the surgeryfor appointments. There is a steady demand, indeed one week we carried out sixcalls. If you need to use the service do ask the receptionist when making yourappointment.
