Second Collections June 30/July 1st At St. Mary

We will take the Peter’s Pence Collection which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world.

The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war,

oppression, and disasters. Please be generous. For more information,

visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence.

It has taken over 40 years, since Pope Paul VI called for the Church to recognize its original mission to evangelize the world. Over the years, efforts to evangelize have included implementing the Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults. We have too often used the terms evangelization and catechesis interchangeably. They are not the same. We are just figuring that out. The Catholic Church has ended up with a lot of newly-initiated adults who were catechized but not evangelized. That is like starting on third base, but never touching first or second base. The Alpha course offers a resource to begin what is proving to be an effective way to evangelize Christians and non-Christians, Catholics who are on third base but were never offered the opportunity to start on first. First base is about discovering the Good News that God loves us and wants to become a part of our lives. First base is about discovering the risen Christ. It's about learning how to listen to him and how to talk to him in what we sometimes refer to as spontaneous prayer. It's also about being filled with the Holy Spirit. A week-end away allows participants in the Alpha Course to experience the Holy Spirit. And for a lot of people, this is what gets them onto first base. My first base experience occurred at 18 years old, during my freshman year of college. I participated in a retreat week-end called "La Rencontre", French for "The Encounter". It was at the Sarto Center in Hooksett, where several parishioners recently attended a "Cursillo" (pronounced Kur-see-yo) week-end. That's when Jesus became very real to me. That's when I knew that God loved every single part of me. And that's when my Catholic spirituality took root. My later experience of being prayed with for the release of the Holy Spirit within me led me to a life of praise, through which I discovered the power to love, and the tools to recognize my sinfulness and to do something about it.

The Alpha Course. Coming to us this fall.

of our parish who are suffering grief. We could not do it without you.
