Divine Mercy Sunday marks the Second Sunday of the Easter Season. We need to be reminded again and again of the love of God that comes to us in Jesus Christ. "Miser" is a Latin word for sinner.
"Cor" means heart. "Dar" is the word to give. Misericordia therefore means: "Give your heart to me, a sinner." Mercy is the love from the heart of God that allows us to know we are loved, forgiven,
inspired, instructed and guided. To receive God's mercy, we appropriate the heart of God. We too join God in showing mercy, giving of ourselves to others from the heart, sometimes people latch
onto our hearts and in turn become merciful, forgiving, and loving.
The Devotion to "Divine Mercy" and the recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, with the main prayer being: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world", originated with
Saint Faustian, a Polish visionary who experienced visions of Jesus less than a hundred years ago. Pope John Paul II was a great believer in the authenticity of her visions. Noting the appropriateness of
the biblical readings for Masses celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter, he used the designation Divine Mercy Sunday to highlight a message that we find at the very heart of the Gospel.
