FRom The eXecuTive diRecToRDear Neighbors & Friends,
Your contributions to Great Rivers United Way in 2015 have not gone unnoticed!
Whether you were among the hundreds of new users who logged in to give back on our re-vamped volunteer website, or you were a major contributor to our 2015 campaign, every effort combines to make a strong community. We did it together!
As you will read in these pages, Great Rivers United Way made some strides in 2015. Last year saw several new and different opportunities to get involved:
• We installed our first Born Learning Trail in Sparta’s Evans-Bosshard Park (p. 14).• We launched reading tutor program Read to Success with the Sparta School District (p. 15).• We collaborated with three institutes of higher ed to launch www.ugetconnected.org, providing
a central hub for volunteers and agencies to get connected (p. 20).
We continued to move toward the transition to Community Impact funding. Our 2015 COMPASS NOW Report identified areas of concern for the impact areas of health, education, income and community basics. United Way is further down the path to choosing goals within each of those four impact areas.
What was truly reflected in 2015, however, was the deep sense of caring and commitment to community that we all share. Your gifts combine to make a difference in the lives of many who rely on nonprofit resources. They are our neighbors, friends, and even members of our own families. The investment you are making in Great Rivers United Way translates to stronger, healthier citizens who in turn create a stronger, healthier community.
Thank you for your dedication displayed through giving, advocating, and volunteering in 2015. Sincerely,
Mary Kay WolfExecutive DirectorGreat Rivers United Way

great rivers united way knows that fulfilling basic human needs is essential for success. The work that we do in the areas of education, income, and health is far less effective if those utilizing our funded programs do not have access to life’s basics.

INITIATIVES
born learningEveryday life is a learning experience for children, and that learning starts at birth. Born Learning is a public engagement campaign that helps parents, grandparents, caregivers, and communities explore ways to turn everyday moments into fun learning opportunities.
Great Rivers United Way launched its Born Learning initiative in August, installing the area’s first interactive, outdoor learning trail in Sparta’s Evans-Bosshard Park. This Born Learning Trail was made possible by a partnership with the Sparta Parks Department, as well as funding and in-kind donations from several Sparta-area businesses.
We are excited to announce that Born Learning is coming to La Crosse County in 2016! After seeing our success in Sparta, one of our corporate partners secured funding for a trail in the La Crosse area, with the potential for more Born Learning Trails, which will be installed this summer. Plans for an Onalaska trail are in the works, too – stay tuned!

INITIATIVES
Designed with the educational needs of third-grade students in mind, Great Rivers United Way’s new volunteer reading tutor program, READ TO SUCCESS, aims to put kids on a road to success. The program launched in early 2016 in collaboration with the Sparta Area School District.
Children learn to read, and then they read to learn. Reading is a foundational skill directly tied to future academic and adult success, and third grade is a pivotal time for learning in this area. READ TO SUCCESS relies on volunteers who will make a lifelong impact on a child.
By the end of 2015, the School District of La Crosse had also signed on to participate in READ TO SUCCESS. Our goal for students at four elementary schools in Sparta and La Crosse’s Hamilton Elementary School is improved reading scores, using measurements that the school districts are already collecting.

2015-16 campaignOnce again, the people of the Great Rivers region are leading the charge to transform our community through their generosity and compassion. We are deeply grateful for their support.
The 2015-16 United Way campaign truly illustrates the heart of our community, as we came together to raise $2,082,777.42. Campaign Co-Chairs Dyanne Brudos and Roger Thornton championed another great campaign.
We are so proud to be a part of such a generous and caring community. Everyday people just like you are making the promise to create positive change for those in need. Financial gifts to Great Rivers United Way allow us to create strategic partnerships that tackle issues affecting education, financial stability, health and basic human needs.
Your gift to United Way will continue to shape the future of our four-county region. Please accept our sincere gratitude for your continued support of Great Rivers United Way.

VOLUNTEERSIn 2015, Great Rives United Way expanded its volunteer impact by collaborating with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Viterbo University, and Western Technical College on the administration of its volunteer website, Ugetconnected.
Ugetconnected – available and FREE to use at www.ugetconnected.org – matches community members with local organizations looking for volunteers.
Ugetconnected gives agencies with finite resources and time an easy way to share their needs and recruit volunteers. Those looking for service opportunities are able to create an account that allows them to receive custom notifications when a new need they may be interested in is added to the site. Additionally, there is a handy time-tracking tool for logging volunteer hours.
The Coulee Region is home to many individuals and organizations that want to make a difference. Ugetconnected brings them together, promoting lasting change in our community.
The numbeRs 108 agencies 174 active needs 2,482 users total 858 connections made since August

Description of Membership Dues and Service Charges Received by the Federation from Its Member Charities
Great Rivers United Way does not charge membership fees or annual dues to member charities to be a part of our federation. Therefore, in order to cover overhead expenses, Great Rivers United Way first utilizes “undesignated” contributed funds. Undesignated funds have been contributed directly to and not designated to a particular agency.
Like similar federations, Great Rivers United Way strives to raise sufficient undesignated funds to cover 100% of operating costs. According to the most recent independent audit of Great Rivers United Way financial statements, every designated dollar was forwarded to Great Rivers United Way members of the Federation.
