The Committee welcomes you to the

2016 Commonwealth Championship Sheepdog Trial,

one of Australia’s Premier Sheepdog Trialling events.

The Commonwealth Championship Sheepdog Trials are affiliated with the

V.W.S.D.A. There are finals in all Commonwealth Championship events. There will only be TOP SCORING DOG in the OPEN section.

THE WORKING OF AN ARENA TRIAL IN VICTORIA

SHEEP DOG TRIALS that are held on an arena use three sheep for each trial.

The sheep are usually deposited by a trailer and released from a let-out pen (1).

Each trial begins when the worker takes up his position at the peg (2), with his

dog about 10 metres behind.

A siren signifies the start and the time-keeper starts the watch. Time allowed

for the trial is 15 minutes.

Each dog starts with 100 points. Points are then progressively deducted

according to the judge’s assessment.

steadiness, control of sheep & dog)

A perfect cast is when the dog runs out

in an arc and takes up a commanding

position directly behind the sheep, and

then moves them gently but firmly in a

straight line towards the worker (to the left of an imaginary centre line). As the sheep

are drawn down they must be balanced in a straight course and brought around the

worker at the peg (2) in an anti-clockwise direction.

Having completed he cast, lift and draw, the worker then walks in a straight course to

the first obstacle (the gap - 3), with the dog balancing the sheep close to his right. On

arrival at the gap, the sheep, are forced, or balanced, through a metre gap between two

3-metre hurdles.

He then moves on to negotiate the race (4). Having negotiated the race (4), he proceeds

to the bridge (5), keeping the sheep on his right, he finally approaches the pen (6). The

course is completed when the sheep are in the pen and the gate is shut.

The dog must not cross between the worker and the sheep at any time, except when

forcing in a proper manner at an obstacle. Should he do so, the worker is disqualified.

In the event of having not completed the course within the 15 minute time limit, he will

retain his points, less deductions for the obstacles that have not been completed.

Australian Dog of the Year

Each state is represented as follows

NSW: MGH Boy is worked by Mick Hudson. His Dam is Hudson’s Pup

and Sire is Wondara King. He placed in 6 Open finals in NSW and won

the 2015 Supreme Australian Championship in Tasmania. He also won the

Trans Tasman at Port Fairy in 2015. MGH Boy was equal 1st place NSW

Dog of the Year.

Q’Land: Blackbrook Phoebe is a 3 year old Border Collie worked by

Geoff Gibson whose Sire is Craig, an imported dog from England, and her

Dam is Blackbrook Marnie, litter sister to Blackbrook Merri. Phoebe won

Stanthorpe Trial and has been placed in many other trials.

SA: Somerville Clyde is worked by Stephen Geraghty from Aberfoyle

Park. Clyde is 10 years old and bred by Malcolm Taylor. He is by

Amadeus Mick out of Somerville Floss. Clyde has represented SA 5 times

at the Supreme and this is the third time as Dog of the Year.

TAS: Mocara Ed is a 9 year old Border Collie worked by Malcolm

Taylor, whose Sire is Somerville Spot and Dam is Bonnie Doon Gypsy. Ed

is a dual winner of the Tasmanian Championship and has represented

Australia twice. He was the first dog to achieve selection in the current

national Trans-Tasman team.

VIC: Morgan’s Eddy is a 6 year old who is worked by John Tuddenham

from Ross Creek and was bred by Guy Morgan. His Sire is Morgan’s

Freckles and Dam is Morgan’s Gemma. He has won 3 open finals and had

many placings. He is a very good casting dog and an easy dog to work.

WA: Grassvalley Sky is worked by Grant Cooke from Grass Valley. Sky is a 6 year old Border Collie by Grassvalley Moss out of Pendalup Candy. Sky is a persistent performer who has placed in all trials in WA in 2015 allowing her to win the WA Arena Dog of the Year.
