ATTENTION RESIDENTS: Because of the work required to the Clubhouse before we could have impact windows installed,

we are unable to put the awnings back on the building and will have to purchase something new. It has been decided that a

permanent overhang would be the best answer to provide both shade and shelter on the pool side of the building. Because it

will be an unanticipated cost, we will be calling a special meeting in August and providing proxies so residents can vote on

this change to original plans. This meeting is scheduled to be held during our normal Board Meeting of August 9th.

    A word from the president...

Things are really hopping these days around our common grounds.

New poles for our parking lot lighting have been delivered and are

being stored in the Bocce Court until they are ready for installation.

We are excited at the prospect of making our parking lots safer and

hope that improvement will be appreciated by all who are walking

    and/or parking their vehicles.

The Burrowing Owls have established three new domiciles and

don’t seem to be bothered at all with the construction going on

around the property. That includes AT&T who has been in our

community digging up yards and right-of-ways in order to install

their fiber optics. Our sprinkler system has really taken a beating

because of their actions but we are holding them responsible and making them do all repairs at their ex-

pense. Hopefully, they will be out of here soon and we can get the sprinkler system operating again. If

any of you have experienced problems in your yards due to AT&T, be sure to let us know.

Finishing the clubhouse has become a bit complicated since we rejected the doors the contractor wanted

to install and they had to order some more to our liking. Once the new doors are in place, things should

move right along. The temporary wall can come down, the building and roof can be power washed, new

fascia boards can be constructed, stuccoing can be done, then painting will make our community look

like new. Also, once the doors are in, the work planned for the kitchen can be done at the same time all

the outside work is going on.

One snag in the overall approved plans has happened. Because of the work required to the CH before we

could have impact windows installed, we are unable to put the awnings back on the building and will

have to purchase something new. It has been decided that a permanent overhang would be the best an-

swer to provide both shade and shelter on the pool side of the building. Because it will be an unantici-

pated expense, we will be calling a special meeting in August and providing proxies so residents can

vote on this change to original plans. This meeting is scheduled to be held during our normal Board

    Meeting of August 9th.

We are working with the City to make a small sidewalk from the Mainland Drive parking lot to our front

driveway which will be installed in front of the new mailbox which the USPS in their wisdom decided to

place with the opening slot facing our building. That maneuver now makes it necessary for everyone to

walk over very uneven ground and, besides ruining what little grass we have, it presents a safety hazard.

If you have ideas for other projects we should consider, please let any Board member or the Office

    know. All ideas are welcome.

    pam

NOTICE: If anyone wants the clubhouse cabinets, which are scheduled to be replaced in

July, please let the office know. They will be given to you “as is” and on a “first come” basis.

How do you remember names? I tend to associate the

person’s name with something similar. So meet Marilyn

from Maryland. A native of Maryland, Marilyn Derry

retired from local government as an administrative aide for

the deputy director of the Prince George’s County jail.

She came down to Florida to visit her pastor and his wife,

snowbirds who were originally from Maryland, and are

now residents of Mainlands 1 and 2. The first year she

stayed one week, the second year two weeks, and the third

year three weeks after which she went back North and put

her condo in Maryland on the market. She sold it in a week

and moved in with her friends down here for 6 weeks until she found the house she wanted in Mainlands1

    & 2. She has been a Mainlander since July 26, 2015.

Although Marilyn does not consider herself the adventurous type, this move, according to her “put me

where I am supposed to be right now”. “Mainlands is like an oasis in a metropolitan desert” says Marilyn.

“When I turn into Mainland Drive, I feel calm and “at home”, she says. Marilyn dabbled in oil painting 20

years ago and took 3 community college art classes. When she moved down here, she became interested in

oils again (and can vouch for the fact that oil paints can last 20 years in their tubes). She found a studio

here in Fort Lauderdale, and a teacher, Peter Olsen (who has offered classes at Mainlands and will again in

the fall). When I asked Marilyn why she gave up painting many years ago, she indicated that “life got in

the way”. After seeing pictures of some of her work, I am glad she took painting up again. She is very,

very good. She suggested that anyone interested in learning to paint find a teacher with whom he/she feels

    comfortable and “go for it”.

Marilyn has been married and divorced and she has one daughter, three grown grandchildren and 6 great

grandchildren, who all live in rural Kentucky. She keeps in touch with them through Facebook and other

social media outlets. Marilyn has one sister who is a flight attendant. Besides her interest in art, Marilyn

has been involved with fostering and adopting rescue dogs. She had 5 dogs for a week one time and told

me how she would tell each dog which bowl was his and the dogs would listen and respond. Currently

Marilyn has a Pekinese named Jelly and a Chihuahua named Cheech. Jelly is still a little skittish around

people, but loves Marilyn to death. One of Mainlands many volunteers, Marilyn always volunteers for

Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day. Because she lives here year-round, she recognizes the need to

support the community in the summer, when the snowbirds are not here and help is even more appreciated.

She is also supportive of the newly regenerated Women’s Club.

    Rejuvenating the Mainlands 1 & 2 Clubhouse.

A pictorial report by Dave Brutovsky, photographer

Storage area where our chairs and tables were kept... … has lost the old covered windows which will not be

    replaced.

We can see how the old extension wall was not built

    « to code »!

Different story for the new wall… solid enough to carry the

    heavy hurricane-proof windows.

Cinder blocks erected. Two open spaces for new

doors to be installed. New outside wall ready for inspection then stucco

and the new walls are ready for new windows.

    parking areas.

Bylaws and Restrictions Review Committee Update

The corrections, additions and deletions made by the committee to the Constitution and

Bylaws have been incorporated into the working document. On June 14 the working

document was shared with the Board of Directors. The Board made some suggestions to

clarify parts of the document and the suggestions that were accepted by the Board will

    be added to the document.

The next step will be to meet with the lawyers to go over the questions that the commit-

tee had about aspects of the document which are unclear. The Board has seen all the

questions and agrees that they need to be discussed with the lawyers. This will take

place in the next month or two.

Hurricane season is upon us once again, with peak season

between mid-August to late October. These strong tropi-

cal storms can leave a wide wake of destruction in their

path. Being prepared is your best defense.

    Developing a Plan

Identify where you will go if you need to evacuate - i.e., relative, friend, public shelter, etc.

Prepare your hurricane supplies-refer to the list provided for guidance on supplies.

Stay informed of the latest updates and evacuation orders.

Prepare a detailed list of information about the specifics of your medication regime.

Consult your physician and medical supply vendors to make sure you are adequately prepared for a hurricane.

Contact your local emergency information management office if you have any concerns. Wear medical alert tags or bracelets to identify your disability and/or medical condition.

    Emergency Supply Checklist

You should stock your home with supplies that may be needed during the emergency period. At a minimum, these supplies should include:

Water – at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days

Food- enough for at least 3 to 7 days; non-perishable packaged or canned food and beverages, snack foods, juice, foods for infants or those with strict diets

Non-electric can opener, paper plates, plastic utensils, plastic cups

    Grill, cooking tools, fuel, charcoal

    Blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, etc.

    Clothing – seasonal/rain gear/sturdy shoes or boots

First Aid Kit, prescriptions, medications, sun screen, aloe and bug spray

Special items for babies, elders, persons with disabilities

Toiletries – hygiene items and sanitation wipes

Flashlights and batteries – do not use candles
