Angie ShearProject ManagerColumbus State Community College

I have grown up in the higher education industry, which means I have a lot of different experiences to share with you! Starting out in recruitment/student support roles, I gained a great deal of sales, customer service, and outreach experience. That launched me into a 10+ year career in marketing and communications where my expertise included: social media, event planning, and creative project management. Keeping tasks on track was at the center of my marketing work, so when an opportunity to serve as a project manager (PM) opened up and I was excited to try something new. The PM role includes managing college-wide and technical projects to ensure tasks are completed on time and under budget. I received my undergraduate degree from Franklin University in Marketing (where I’m now an adjunct faculty member) and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Capital University.

I first started working with code as a hobby back in 2015. When I realized how much I enjoyed it, I decided to try to transform that hobby into a career. I enrolled with Columbus State in 2017, working nights and attending classes during the day. Towards the end of my degree, I had the opportunity to participate in the IT Flexible Apprenticeship program. I accepted an apprenticeship with Nationwide, and spent my final semester learning in a real-world environment. I graduated from Columbus State at the end of 2019, and accepted an offer for a full-time web development position with Nationwide. It’s been incredibly fulfilling working on apps that make the lives of others just that little bit easier.

Jed DuffeySoftware DeveloperAccenture (formerly part of Pillar Technology)

I’ve worked for various industries, typically in administrative roles at small-sized companies, and always gravitated toward working to provide improved IT solutions for those businesses and ended up becoming the “unofficial IT person”. I’d describe my career background as IT and network support. In 2016 I joined a coding boot camp with the goal of transitioning my career to software development. Shortly after the boot camp I was hired on the IT support team for a local software consulting firm with the understanding that I would also work occasionally with some of their developers to improve my developer skills and eventually transfer to a full-time developer role. Fortunately for me this went as planned and as of 2020 I have been working as a developer full-time for over two years.

I transitioned from restaurant management and event planning to recruiting for a national chain of culinary schools. I went through rigorous public speaking training and learned strong recruitment techniques. With this company, I was able to build on my communication and organizational skills, as well as learn new marketing techniques. I am now implementing the skills I’ve learned in my past experiences through building a recruitment program for The School of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts at Columbus State.

I began my Columbus State journey in 2013; by 2017 I had two degrees from Columbus State and one from Capital University. I wasn’t sure exactly where I saw my path leading, but I’ve always known I wanted to help people. While on my journey, I worked in health & wellness for the City of Columbus for two internship stints, then I interned under the Athletic Supervisor at Prairie Township Community Center. I worked as a manager, and fitness instructor there as well. I managed an Orangetheory Fitness Studio shortly after graduation, before finding a brief role as the Wellness Ambassador for a dental office. I left that position for a role with my current job, a chemical distribution company. While I was disappointed to be veering away from the SES field, this job allows me to spend more time with my family. I also now keep regular business hours which help me keep a dedicated fitness routine! Sport & Exercise studios hasn’t led me to my dream job (YET), but I use what I learned at Columbus State every day!!!!
