It is with great pleasure and a sense of achievementthat I present the President’s Message for theAnnual Report of the year 2016.
2016 was the year that the College celebrated itsSilver Jubilee.
The vision and the dedication of all the 24 PastPresidents before me with their Councils havecontributed to making the College what is it today.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Today the College has become a professional association with internationalrecognition. In December this year we are hosting the Annual Meeting of theDelhi Ophthalmological Society of India. In March 2017 we will be hosting theAnnual Meeting of the Eurasian Society of Ophthalmology.
Since the year 2011 our members who were nominated for the LeadershipDevelopment Programme of Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmologists havegraduated annually. In year 2017 we will be hosting the Master Class of theLeadership Development Programme of the Asia Pacific Academy ofOphthalmologists in concurrence with the Annual Congress in September.
This year the 25th Annual Academic Sessions which was held at the Hotel CinnamonGrand and Hotel Taj was of a high academic standard with over 300 delegatesincluding ophthalmologists, optometrists and trainees participating and worldrenowned experts from several subspecialties been included in the invitedguest faculty.
At the Inauguration Ceremony of the 25th Congress, four senior members of theCollege were awarded Fellowships for their contributions to the College as wellas to the discipline of ophthalmology.

We conducted the annual academic programme for the membership this year,covering areas of corneal infection; complications of cataract surgery;glaucoma and neuro ophthalmology. The first ever Wet Lab programme onphacoemulsification conducted by the College was held this year at the NationalEye Hospital.
The routine academic programmes for the supporting staff, was conducted thisyear for the Ophthalmic Technologists and the Ophthalmic Nursing Officers atthe Nawaloka Hospital Auditorium, Colombo.
The College was involved in the Screening and Health Educational Activitieswhich are conducted on a regular basis; to mark the World Glaucoma Week aswell as the World Diabetic Day. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to, His Excellencythe President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, HonorableMaithripala Sirisena for his gracious presence at the Walk for the World GlaucomaWeek.
Another public awareness programme was held in April this year, prior to theonset of the festive season. This was the press conference to raise the awarenessthrough the media among the public, in preventing injuries from fire crackers andother fireworks during the festive season.
The social activities of the College started with the Felicitation Night for thesponsors. All those who supported us with our activities during the year andespecially at the Annual Congress were invited and felicitated. This was held inthe last week of October, following the Congress.
The month of November saw another social activity, the Annual Trip. This yearthe trip was to the Pegasus Reef Hotel, Wattala. The day ended with an eveningof music and dinner.
The events of the year will be finalized with the Annual General Meeting scheduledfor the 18th of December followed by another social event, the Annual SportsDay. The cricket match, the netball match and the family get together will be heldwith the participation of the trade sector.

This year has been an year of achievements for the College; a year of newpartnerships and collaborations and a year in which the existing bonds havebeen strengthened. We have had the opportunities to express our gratitude tothose who have been with us from the inception of the College 25 years ago,supporting and encouraging us.
The College would have not achieved all this except for the fact that the Advisorsand the Council have stood by me and supported me. My heartfelt gratitudegoes to my two Joint Secretaries for shouldering the responsibilities of conductingthe numerous activities and the administrative duties of the College. The staff ofthe College, the staff of the National Eye Hospital, our sponsors, well wishersand all those who have supported me this year are remembered with gratitude.
I wish that the next President and the Council will be blessed with the supportand the goodwill that I and my Council have received.

Dr. Pradeepa K. Siriwardena was ceremonially inducted as the 25th President ofthe College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka on the 23rd January 2016 at GrandBallroom, Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo. The Chief Guest for the event was Prof.Rohan W. Jayasekara, the former Dean, Chair and Senior Professor of Anatomy,Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.

Meeting with the Director General of Health ServicesThe Council had regular meetings with the DGHS to discuss matters pertinentto activities of the V2020 programme; the shortage of General Ophthalmologistsas well as Ophthalmic Technologists in the Government Hospitals and appoint-ments of sub specialized Ophthalmologists in the Ministry.
The DGHS made arrangements to provide equipment worth 100 million rupeesto Eye Units in hospitals coming under the Ministry of Health.

01. Glaucoma Workshop
The Glaucoma Interest Group of College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lankaconducted two workshops which were held on 12th and 13th of March 2016 atHotel Earl’s Regency, Kandy and at Hilton Colombo Residencies, Colomborespectively. Presentations were done by the invited Guest Faculty.

Dr. Pradeepa K. Siriwardena the 25th President of the College of Ophthalmologistsof Sri Lanka presented her Presidential Address at the Inauguration Ceremony.The theme of the Presidential Address was “Eye Health and the SustainableDevelopmental Goals”.

Community activities
Press Conference on prevention of injuries due to firecrackers and otherfireworks during the festive season
This was held on the 8th of April 2016, at the Auditorium of the National EyeHospital, Colombo.
The aim of this programme was to reduce the incidence of injuries due to firecrackers and other fireworks during the festive season by educating the publicthrough media. Special emphasis was placed on the importance of reducing injuriesin children.

Sea Blue Restore Sight Project for free cataract surgery
Cataract surgical camps conducted by the College under this project
Eye Hospital Colombo – Surgery was performed by Consultants attached tothe National Eye Hospital Dr. Pradeepa K. Siriwardena, Dr. Binara Amarasingheand Dr. Muditha Kulatunge. The patients were from the slum areas in the city ofColombo.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the College and theChina Merchants Charitable Foundation Limited on 1st December 2015.
The Honorable Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Dr. RajithaSenarathna was the Chief Guest for this event and the Chinese Ambassador toSri Lanka Mr. Yi Xianliang was the Guest of Honor.

This was established on the 23rd of January 2016, at Regent Street Branch of theBank of Ceylon. From the profits made by the College in the year 2015, the sumof Rs 2.5 million was deposited.

Activities of the Glaucoma Interest groupDr. Muditha Kulathunga was appointed as the Chairperson of the Glaucoma InterestGroup of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka on the 29th May 2015.The Glaucoma Interest Group organized two workshops on glaucoma forOphthalmologists.
The Glaucoma Session in the Annual Congress was also organized by theGlaucoma Interest Group.

Mass Screening Programme
A mass screening programme to detect Diabetic Retinopathy was held on the16th November at the premises of the National Eye Hospital, Colombo. This wassponsored by Allergan and the health drink was sponsored by Kalbe International.
Module I Revision course
This year too, the College organized a revision course for candidates preparingfor the Ophthalmology Module I examination. External lecturers from MedicalFaculties of the Universities of Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura, Kelaniya andKothalawala Defence University, as well as clinicians from different fieldsparticipated as resource persons. This course was coordinated by Dr. MadhuwanthiDissanayake, Dr. Lalitha Senerath and Dr. Kusum Ratnayake for the year 2016.
The College is grateful to the Director, National Eye Hospital for providing thevenue and appreciates the support given by the administrative staff of the Collegein arranging and co-coordinating the lectures.

Appreciation NightThe Council of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka held an AppreciationNight for all the sponsors of the 25th Annual Congress at the Golden Pond, HotelTaj Samudra, Colombo on the 23rd of October 2016.

Annual Cricket Match
The Annual Cricket Match and the Sports Day will be falling on the 18th December2016 after the AGM. The members of the College, their families and the membersfrom the pharmaceutical sector will be participating. The venue for the activitywill be the Bloomfield Cricket Club, Colombo 07, from 1.00 p. m. onwards. Anetball match and various activities for children have been scheduled and the daywill end with a fellowship dinner.
Annual Trip
The Annual Trip was held on 13th November to Hotel Pegasus Reef. The eventended with a musical evening and dinner.

Mrs. Samanmalie Wewalwala continues to function as the College AdministrativeSecretary with the supporting staff Mr. Silva, Mr. Upali and Mr. Hasitha. The auditingof the College accounts continues to be done by T & A Associates.
