Hi everyone!

We’d like to take a quick minute to introduce ourselves! We are the 2007/2008 Board of the Collective Body for Arts Students (more

affectionately known as the CBAS), and are here to serve all undergraduate Arts students through our role as the new undergraduate student association

for the Faculty of Arts.

The whole CBAS team believes in the importance of representing and advocating for the needs of arts students to the Faculty and the broader

University of Alberta campus community. As we start out in our new capacity this year, we look forward to hearing your feedback and suggestions!

Sincerely,

Ariel Bowering, Jennifer Huygen, Sarah Katyi, Chris Langlois, and Leah Trueblood

CBAS Board Members, 2007/2008

What is the CBAS? The CBAS is the meeting point between undergraduate Arts students and the

Faculty of Arts. As a student association, the CBAS is responsible for providing services and representation for its members as well as acting in an advocacy capacity to the Faculty on Faculty related issues. Specifically, this means we, amongst other things, coordinate grad photos, locker sales, and

student representation on various committees.

The CBAS is also actively involved with Arts student groups in the Faculty, and we collaborate regularly with other Faculty Associations.

All Arts students are automatically members of the CBAS if you have paid your student fees, and we look forward to hearing from you as to how we can

help to improve your student experience within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta.

Ariel Bowering, Website and Communications Portfolio Hey there folks, my name is Ariel Bowering and I am a "fourth" year Women's Studies major. I have actually taken five years to complete my degree with a couple years off; not too uncommon these days I hear. I am also working on attaining the Certificate in Globalization and Governance offered by the Political Science Department. As for when I'm not doing something CBAS related, in class, or working at the Alberta Public Interest Research Group (APIRG), I like rummage sales, participating in crafting collectives, playing board games and drinking tea with my cats. I also really really like consensus based decision-making processes and any other tools that help us organize ourselves in inclusive, mutually empowering ways. My hope for the CBAS this year is that we lay the foundation for a vibrant and functional organization for undergraduate Arts students. I hope that you will consider getting involved.

Who are we?

Jennifer Huygen, Council of Departmental Associations (CODA) Portfolio Bonjour tout le monde! My name is Jennifer Huygen and I’m a second year student in the Department of Political Science. As the board member responsible for CODA, it is my responsibility to liaise with the different Departmental Associations and student groups affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. We will be holding CODA meetings each term, and plan to offer grants, space and resources to student groups. I’m really excited to see the CBAS come together this year, and I hope we can encourage more students to get involved in Arts-related activities and advocacy! When I’m not hanging out in Rutherford South, I enjoy reading, watching TV, Highland dancing, and writing for the Gateway. Go Oilers Go!

Chris Langlois, Financial Portfolio I hold the financial board position in CBAS, and have been appointed to the CSL Advisory Board and act as a CaPS undergraduate ambassador to the Faculty of Arts. Outside of CBAS I have two part-time jobs and a third more occasional job. I am a 5th year Arts student majoring in both Human Geography and Film Studies. My current academic interests lie in the spatial relations between film accessibility and spectatorship. Beyond school and work, I enjoy reading science fiction novels, watching zombie-based films and planning for the eventual zombie apocalypse. I love animals and currently share my home with a number of different little beasts. After I graduate from the UofA, I plan to spend time traveling abroad before continuing my education.

Sarah Katyi, Volunteer Portfolio My name is Sarah Katyi and I am a first year Arts student. My portfolio on the board is responsible for working with arts volunteers and events. I am happy to be a part of the new student association for the Faculty of Arts and it is a great opportunity to work with other talented students and to learn many new things.

Leah Trueblood, Council of Faculty Associations (COFA) Portfolio

How are you? My name is Leah Trueblood I am third year student in the Honors Philosophy program. I am the board member responsible for liaising with other faculty associations, the Students Union, and the Faculty of Arts, hooray! I am interested in building a student association in Arts that attracts and retains talented people. I think that people are what will make our new and exciting faculty association a success. In my free time I enjoy napping, advocacy, reading and Guinness. My happiest University Memories are from Lister Center, the Cortona program and the CBAS office.

Caleigh Rhind, Member-at-Large Hello! I'm Caileigh (aka Northern Pike, according to Facebook) and I'm a third year Sociology major/Psychology minor! I'm a member of TEAM MAL, which does not mean I'm a member of Team Sad...this membership of awesomeness means I'm a Member-at-Large with CBAS! I like to think of myself as an extra fin around the CBAS office...so swim on in and say hi!.

Jason Wong, Member-at-Large Greetings! My name is Jason and I am a third year History major with a Chemistry minor. I know it is a weird combination but this program allows me to best express my true colours and it is because I am an Arts student that I am allowed such flexibility! I am currently a Member-at-Large with CBAS, but I have been involved for quite some time in the policy field of CBAS. If you want to come talk about policy, Member at Large duties or other CBAS-related business, feel free to drop by during my office hours! In addition, if you share a passion for Desperate Housewives, Starbucks Coffee or wine and cocktails, feel free to drop by as well! By the way, some of you may recognize me as the guy you see in front of the CBAS offices scrubbing out the microwaves ovens... it is a nasty job, but someone has to do it!

Patrick Wisheu, Students’ Union Liaison

My name is Patrick and I’m a fourth year Anthropology student. I am the Council Liaison to CBAS, as I am an Arts Representative to the Students’ Union Council and General Faculty’s Council. I spent this last summer traveling Europe and digging in the dirt. If you have any questions about the Students’ Union or myself, feel free to ask!

You can reach all of us by email at [email protected]! We are also on Facebook – search “CBAS”

How can you get involved in the mighty CBAS?

The Council of Departmental Associations (CODA) is a group of departmental associations and affiliated student groups within the Faculty of Arts that gets together approximately twice per term in meetings

hosted by the CBAS. CODA is designed as a resource to student groups within the Faculty—whether you are an established group, a new group, or wanting to create a group—and works towards providing a forum

for the sharing of best practices and the opportunity for collaboration between groups.

This month – the CBAS is offering our first round of student group granting! Application packages are available in the brochure rack outside our office and for download off our website

Deadline: Monday, 28 January @ 5:00pm – must be submitted to our office in HC 2-10

We are also currently looking for individuals interested in sitting on our granting committee. If you are available for a span of about 2-3 hours on Tuesday, 29 January, please email [email protected] or call

492-5085.

If you are interested in getting involved in the CBAS, we encourage you to come out to our monthly Town Hall meetings and/or sit on one of our committees. If you are interested in volunteering in an executive capacity, elections for the 2008/2009 CBAS Board will be held in the coming months. Stay tuned for more! As an organization in transition, we welcome any feedback or suggestions as to what we can do to improve the experience of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts. The CBAS, through a committee structure, is currently working on:

! Student space issues ! Policy ! Creating an Arts agenda for Orientation 2008

The CBAS also coordinates lockers sales and grad photos each term.
