A Circle of Friends Working Togetherfor the Future of Anthroposophy

Dear friends,

We are deeply grateful for the support and encouragement that we receive every year—and have received for many years—from you, our readers and fellow students of Anthroposophy. We understand that these are precarious economic times and thus appreciate all the more the gifts, both large and small that you have given us. What you have given us, we try to manage responsibly and give back to you in the form of books, catalogs, and conferences. And from these, new readers and seekers all over the world find their way—each their own way—to Anthroposophy and Ru-dolf Steiner. This is a work we do together. Thus the circle grows.

In her dedication to the future, Ita Wegman followed the example of her teacher, Rudolf Steiner, as we try to do also.

[Ita Wegman] was in her outlook and in her work in advance of other people, because she was always working for the future. If you would meet her now, you would be astonished about the things she would be thinking of for the next 20 or 30 years. …There was no one who lived so much for the future. She never allowed the past to hang onto her. With her, all was work: all was future. She lived only for the future. — Liane Collot d’Herbois

Rudolf Steiner worked tirelessly for the sake of earthly-human evolution. His vision of Anthroposophy was always oriented to the future, never the past. He saw the task of Anthroposophy as a world-cultural one, not just to transform human culture to-day, but also to prepare for its future. His goal was a gradual spiritual awakening of humanity, expanding from an esoteric core of Anthroposophists to all those drawn into its transformative orbit through work undertaken in the world. And yet, as the 100th anniversary of the re-founding of the Anthroposophical Society approaches (in 2023/24), the mission, teachings, and even the words of Ru-dolf Steiner are in danger of being marginalized and ignored. Though the daughter movements—such as Waldorf education and Biodynamics—are growing, it seems that fewer people every year read and study what Rudolf Steiner taught. As human beings, we all have a duty to the future; and, as anthroposophists, we have a duty to ensure the possibility that Anthroposophy participate in shaping that

future. At SteinerBooks, we see our mission as the cultivation of Anthroposophy both by spiritually free individuals, singly and in groups, and as a Society working inwardly and outwardly to create the seeds of a future spiritual culture of selflessness, sacrifice, and creativity (spiritual research). This means continuing to publish Rudolf Steiner’s words as accurately and accessibly as possible. It means continuing to pub-lish works that help one to find one’s way—to walk one’s own path—individually, consciously, and responsibly through the vast treasure-house of Steiner’s works. It means continuing to publish works that deepen and clarify the foundations and practices of the daughter movements. It means supporting them with secondary lit-erature. Finally, it also means finding new authors and encouraging original spiritual research of all kinds. As publishers, our first task therefore is to make available the works of Rudolf Steiner in well-translated, well-edited professional editions. Though Rudolf Steiner has been published in English for almost a century, this has never yet been accom-plished in a consistent, uniform fashion in which a person coming to Anthroposo-phy is able to enter and live into the full range of Steiner’s words and from this expe-rience to form an individual relationship to them and to their source, Rudolf Steiner himself. For this reason, in collaboration with Rudolf Steiner Press in the United Kingdom, we are committed to publishing The Collected Works of Rudolf Steiner.

Our mission—to make anthroposophic literary works ever-more visible and accessible to the general public, thereby encouraging the cultivation and spread of Anthroposophy as a spiritual and cultural impulse—remains strongly in the forefront of all that we undertake and accomplish as an organization. However, to continue with this work we must regularly ask for monetary support. Our project of publishing The complete works of Steiner in English, for instance, is an ambitious vision. It can be completed, but only if we have the support of those who recognize its importance for the world today and in the future.

We strongly believe that although the value (social, spiritual, and cultural) of the books in The Collected Works of Rudolf Steiner series, as well as others that we publish, are far from being fully appreciated at this time, they will endure and that the wider recognition of their importance will continue to grow. Our activities, therefore, are always directed toward the future.

In the meantime, we ask if you are in support of the work we are doing, to please send us the gift that seems right to you. No donation is too small—or too large! All are received with deep gratitude.

Sincerely,

* Please see the last page of this catalogfor details on how to give to SteinerBooks

Rudolf Steiner understood that the history of art is a field in which the evolu-tion of consciousness is symptomatically and transparently revealed. This informal sequence of thirteen lectures was given during the darkest hours of World War I. It was a moment when the negative consequences of what he called “the age of the consciousness soul,” which had begun around 1417, were most terribly made apparent. In these lectures he sought to provide an antidote to pessimism. After describing the movement of consciousness from Greece into Rome, which coupled with influences from the Orthodox East, he showed how these influences transformed as the Middle Ages became the Renaissance. The process that begins with Cimabue and Giotto develops, deepens, and becomes more conscious in the great Renaissance masters Leonardo, Michelan-gelo, and Raphael. And then the continuation of this movement in the North-ern masters—Dürer and Holbein, as well as the whole German tradition. An entire lecture is devoted to Rembrandt, followed by one on Dutch and Flemish painting. Thus themes are woven together that bring us into the way in which past epochs of consciousness and art live again in our consciousness soul epoch. Replete with interesting information and over 800 color and black and white images, these lectures are rich and dense with ideas, enabling one to understand both the art of the Renaissance and the transformation of consciousness that it announced. These lectures demonstrate (to paraphrase Shelley) that artists truly are “the unacknowledged legislators of the age.”

This is the sequel to CW 272: Anthroposophy in the Light of Goethe’s Faust. By late 1916, Rudolf Steiner is interpreting Goethe’s Faust in the light of anthro-posophy. Steiner is an important interpreter of Goethe. Although his readings are unconventional and unsystematic, Steiner’s insights into the text are pene-trating and prescient: they open up scholarly avenues that were discovered and pursued by others only decades later and, in some cases, are still awaiting fuller elaboration. Steiner’s account is completely unlike those of his contemporaries, including the Goethe scholars he admired most. It is neither a philological con-struction of the ideal text, nor a positivisticaccount of the biographical genesis of the work and influences on Goethe, nor an intellectual-historical recasting of the drama as implied philosophical argu-ment, nor a viewpoint on the tale through the lens of an especially refined sensibility. His discussions veer into each of these arenas, but, invariably, Steiner steers back to his original course, stressing the least realistic, the least historical, and the least small-r romantic aspects of Goethe. Steiner contributed to scholarship on Faust above all by opening up new aes-thetic perspectives; by revealing the centrality of Greek Mystery religion within the archetypal unconscious of Faust; by making manifest the duality of evil latent within Goethe’s text; and by exploring the alchemical transformation of consciousness. In this volume, Steiner anticipates the best of Goethe’s Faust by helping us to see the Neoplatonic Faust, the Hermetic Faust, the archetypal Faust—in short, the esoteric Faust.

Anthroposophy in the Light of Goethe’s FaustWritings and Lectures from Mid-1890s to 1916

This book illuminates Goethe’s astonishing vision. The first lecture sets the tone: Goethe sought spiritual science, and Faust is the record of his striving. We are shown how Goethe’s great drama is filled with embry-onic insights that became anthroposophy. This theme is developed with ever-deepening focus: whether it is a question of the spiritual nature of matter, the reverence for truth and knowledge, human destiny and evolution, these lectures show Goethe as a great initiate of our time.

Approaching the Mystery of Golgotha

The teaching at the heart of this volume is selflessness, the overcoming of egotism and the primacy of the other. These remarkable lectures seek to establish a true relationship of service to Christ and the spiri-tual worlds, in accordance with the spirit of the times: the archangel Michael. For the first time, Rudolf Steiner reveals openly the need for a true “Michael School.” Anthroposophy, the fruit of his spiritual re-search, is an earthly representative of Michael.

AutobiographyChapters in the Course of My Life: 1861-1907

Rudolf Steiner seldom spoke of himself in a personal way, but here we are offered a rare glimpse into some of the most intimate aspects of his inner life, his personal relationships and significant events that helped to shape the philosopher, seer and teacher he became. This is not merely a narrative of Steiner’s successes and failures, but the story of a soul possessed of a precise, probing scientific mind. This edition restores the original format of 70 chapters, as they were written for the Goetheanum newsletter.

Awake! For the Sake of the Future

On New Year’s Eve 1922/23, the (first) Goetheanum was destroyed by fire. This was a heavy blow to Rudolf Steiner and to the anthroposophic movement. However, Steiner was adamant that not a single lecture or event scheduled to take place at the now-ruined Goetheanum would be canceled or postponed; he carried on with a determined resolve. This course of lectures is living testament to that resolve. As relevant today as they were in 1923, this volume is an urgent and heartfelt articulation of what could be considered Steiner’s core message and plea to modern humanity: simply put—for the sake of the future, wake up!

Becoming the Archangel Michael’s CompanionsRudolf Steiner’s Challenge to the Younger Generation

Rudolf Steiner presented these lectures to around 100 young people who hoped to bring Waldorf education into the culture of their time. He stressed upon his listeners the great importance of “self-education” as a prerequisite to all other education, and discussed the need for art and feeling, which brings inner nourishment that can grow throughout one’s life. Without such an education, society would not reach a future built on moral love and mutual human confidence—a truly human culture.

The Bhagavad Gita and the WestThe Esoteric Significance of the Bhagavad Gita and ItsRelation to the Epistles of Paul

This book combines two volumes and presents Steiner’s engagement with Hindu thought and Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita as they illumi-nate Western Christian esotericism. In his introduction, Robert Mc-Dermott explores the complex ways in which the Bhagavad Gita has been understood in the East and West. He shows how Krishna’s revela-tion to Arjuna—a foundation of spirituality in India for more than two and a half millennia—assumed a similarly critical role in the Western spiritual revival of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Building Stones for an Understanding of theMystery of Golgotha Human Life in a Cosmic Context

Rudolf Steiner shines fresh light on the historical background and eso-teric meaning of what he calls “the central event of human and earthly history”—the Christ mystery, or the Mystery of Golgotha. Steiner pres-ents a variety of fascinating topics, including original sin and the idea of resurrection; faith and knowledge; the nature of sleep and the mystery of fatigue; violation of the mysteries by Roman Emperors; teachings of Mani and Augustine; our relationship to the so-called dead through spiritualistic séances; and the correspondence among the Platonic year, a day in one’s life, and a human lifetime. Published in a new translation and for the first time in a complete English edition.

The Christ ImpulseAnd the Development of Ego-Consciousness

Rudolf Steiner presents multifaceted perspectives on the Christ impulse based on his independent spiritual research—from the vast cycles of time that preceded Christ’s incarnation and the preparation for his coming to the actual physical embodiment of Christ about two thou-sand years ago in Palestine as Jesus of Nazareth. Steiner also describes how Christ will influence the future development of the Earth and humanity.

Christianity as Mystical FactAnd the Mysteries of Antiquity

During the fall and winter of 1901–02, Steiner gave a series of lec-tures that were rewritten and issued as a printed volume later that year. This is a fundamental book; in Steiner’s own development, in that of Western esotericism, and for our understanding of the Christ event. It features the evolutionary development from the ancient Mysteries through the great Greek philosophers, to the events portrayed in the Gospels.

Communicating AnthroposophyThe Course for Speakers to Promote the Idea of Threefolding

Reading these lectures, we come to realize that everything Steiner enjoins, and the way he does so, applies to a much greater field than what he is explicitly addressing. The participants in this course, who would be going out to speak, were doing so as representatives of Anthroposophy. When they spoke of threefolding, it was as only one manifestation of what living Anthroposophy can be. As such, they had to themselves become living manifestations of Anthroposophy. From this point of view, this course could also be called “How to Be an Anthroposophist.”

Cosmic New YearThoughts for the New Year 1920

These lectures, given around the Holy Nights, are both inspiring and sobering. The Archangel Michael is the “world regent,” who shows us a new path to Christ and to the spirit world, calling on us to create new relationships to spiritual realities. Yet inertia, or lack of will, material-ism and powerful opposing forces make his and our task more difficult. World War I had ended, but peace was still a distant hope. Prescient to our own moment, these lectures are more relevant than ever before.

Death as Metamorphosis of LifeIncluding “What Does the Angel Do in our Astral Body?”& “How Do I Find Christ?”

These lectures deal primarily with aspects of life after death. At stake is the need to understand that we are spiritual beings that live in perpet-ual interaction with the spiritual world – not only the dead, but also with Christ and angelic worlds. The book ends with a clarion call to awake to the demands of human evolution, which the entire spiritual world is working for – freedom and love, which in turn requires our work with the angels and with Christ to overcome egotism, the sole obstacle to the spirituality of the future.

Rudolf Steiner describes polarities of illness and derives courses of treatment from a comprehensive analysis. He considers many individ-ual cases in detail giving indications on therapeutic exercises, diet, and medicine. The “I,” he states, relates directly to the physical body, and the spirit and soul need to be considered when making diagnoses. Through-out the lectures, Steiner offers advice for the self-development of educa-tors, emphasizing the need for enthusiasm, humor, and courage.

Esoteric Lessons 1904–1909From the Esoteric School, Volume 1

On most occasions when Rudolf Steiner would visit a city to give a lecture, either to members or to the general public, he held a meeting of the Esoteric Section, where he also gave a talk. These talks were intended to provide his most advanced students with the esoteric back-ground of his ongoing spiritual research. The talks are profound, inti-mate and revealing, covering a vast range of subjects in a continuous flow of lectures (more than 15,500 pages). They constitute an essential part of every library of spiritual works.

Esoteric Lessons 1910–1912From the Esoteric School, Volume 2

The focus of the second volume of Esoteric Lessons is inner work, praxis, presenting us with the possibility of intimacy with the spiritual worlds. We learn to enter ourselves and to unite with the universal spirit. Two things are needed: we must trust patiently and with inner truthfulness in the process, and we must learn to transform the atti-tudes that threaten our worthiness – doubt, superstition, and egoism. As for the ways of overcoming egoism, Steiner turns repeatedly to the deeper meanings of Christ’s teachings and the practice of Rosicrucian meditation.

Esoteric Lessons 1913–1923From the Esoteric School, Volume 3

Beginning in January 1913, five days after the Anthroposophical Soci-ety was founded, this rich volume traces the esoteric work in the decade leading up to the re-establishment of the General Anthroposophical Society at the “Christmas Conference,” and the subsequent creation of the First Class, which replaced the Esoteric Section. It allows us to sense the subtle, though seismic, shift as anthroposophy gradually became an autonomous earthly, spiritual reality outside the context of theosophy, with the initial focus to deepen the Rosicrucian path.

Eternal and Transient Elements in Human LifeThe Cosmic Past of Humanity and the Mystery of Evil

Rudolf Steiner addresses one of the great questions of our time: the role of evil in human development. He also addresses a host of additional themes, including occult Freemasonry in Anglo-American countries; materialism in the Roman Catholic Church; prophetic and apocalyptic vision; dualism and fatalism in pre-Christian times; and the delusion of time and space. Seeking to awaken his listeners to the urgency of the tasks ahead of them, he urges them to enliven spiritual understanding with enthusiasm, fire, and warmth of heart.

First Steps in Christian Religious RenewalPreparing the Ground for The Christian Community

The lectures and discussions presented here make up the first of the so-called Priest Courses. They record the first steps of the remarkable journey taken in 1921 by a small group of dedicated souls who, out of their own inner needs and guided by Rudolf Steiner, sought a path to Christian religious renewal. Addressing the group with warm intimacy, Steiner frames their task not primarily in theological terms, but as a need for a renewing of “the religious,” or “the working of the religious element as such.”

Freedom of Thought and Societal ForcesImplementing the Demands of Modern Society

This volume provides a broad overview of Steiner’s thinking on “social threefolding.” Steiner asserts that the cultured classes have become estranged from “real life.” Society needs a “free” culture that would include all classes. Capital, too, needs to be liberated from egotism and allowed, like goods, simply to circulate. Above all, Steiner understood that social realities could not be separated from the spiritual realities of human existence.

Good and Evil Spiritsand their Influence on Humanity

In this series of lectures Rudolf Steiner describes how animals, plants, and minerals have group souls. The planets are connected to great spiritual beings and hierarchies, too, as is the zodiac, which is also evolving. Steiner describes how Christ relates to the zodiacal constel-lations and to our own higher aspects. Spiritual entities are associated with the Earth’s evolution and the previous stages of its existence. Steiner also elaborates relevant chapters in An Outline of Esoteric Sci-ence, explaining how our task on Earth is to develop love rather than wisdom.

The Healing ProcessSpirit, Nature, and Our Bodies

In these broadly ranging talks, Rudolf Steiner introduces fundamental principles of anthroposophically-extended medicine. Some of his most remarkable insights are contained in this volume, e.g. that the heart is not a pump. Other topics include: health problems, such as hay fever, migraine, sclerosis, cancer, tuberculosis, typhoid, and childhood dis-eases; regenerative and degenerative processes; the true nature of the nervous system, and many suggestions for the use of minerals, plants, and artistic therapies.

How the Spiritual World Projects into Physical Existence The Influence of the Dead

Death is a predominant topic as Rudolf Steiner explains how people on Earth can reach the dead in a non-mediumistic way and how such interaction is mutually beneficial. He states that people who do not recognize the being of Lucifer during their earthly life will be “vamp-irized” by that being after passing through the gate of death. Steiner elaborates on the activities of the adversarial beings in today’s civiliza-tion—spiritual powers that play a needed role in Earth’s evolution—and how we can counteract them.

Human EvolutionA Spiritual-Scientific Quest

Returning from travels in war-torn Europe, Steiner gives a stark impres-sion of the disastrous conditions of the time, encouraging deeper eso-teric work to counter the crises. Speaking of human development in the light of Anthroposophy, he analyzes the gulf between contem-porary culture and science (which he says are characterized by “nar-row-mindedness, ignorance and ineptitude”) and a scientific approach to the spirit. Steiner is clear about the shortcomings of his followers, mentioning past failures and a continuing tendency toward sectarian-ism and dogmatic judgment.

The Influence of the Dead on DestinyIn these lectures, Rudolf Steiner clarifies the manifold ways in which the dead participate continuously in the lives of those on Earth. He uses concrete examples to demonstrate that the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds is “right in the middle of the human being.” There are not two kinds of nerves but only one, divided by a gap that is in fact the boundary between physical and spiritual realities.

Inner Experiences of EvolutionIn this unique course of lectures Rudolf Steiner describes the inner experience of the states of consciousness known as the Saturn, Sun, Moon, and Earth stages of evolution. He details the experiences of these states, available to all who practice the spiritual-scientific path of meditation. Thus, these stages and states gain an unexpected and existential reality. Steiner gives a description of the Earth state with its experience of death, which Christ knew on the Cross at Golgotha, transforming earthly and human evolution.

Inner Reading and Inner HearingAnd How to Achieve Existence in the World of IdeasThese two lecture courses, given just after the beginning of World War I, stand as a kind of unexpected gift. The first lectures expand on the idea of inner ‘reading’ and ‘hearing’ as the path to spiritual knowing. The second lecture cycle, ‘How to Achieve Existence in the World of Ideas’, deepens the themes, so that the two together provide a guide to the processes underlying meditation and the quest to know the spiri-tual world.

Introducing Anthroposophical MedicineTaking account of modern medical knowledge and practice, and deeply versed in alchemical, Paracelsian and naturopathic approaches, as well as homeopathy, aromatherapy and other “alternative” therapies, Steiner demonstrates how a truly integrated whole-person medicine is possible. Mantric Sayings Meditations 1903–1905Included here are translations of scriptural passages and ancient versions of the Lord’s Prayer that were part of Steiner’s own meditative practice, as well as the 1913 lecture, “The Foundation Stone Address,” for this, too, contains gifts of the spirit. Also included is Steiner’s important “Macrocosmic (or Reverse) Lord’s Prayer.” What makes Mantric Say-ings unique is its range, extending from July 1903 to March 1925—virtually the entirety of Rudolf Steiner’s life as a spiritual teacher—and its personal quality. It is very clear that many of these meditations, whether given to others or simply written in his notebooks or on loose note sheets, were meditations that Steiner himself not only received, but also worked with himself in meditation. This book is a companion volume to Soul Exercises: Word and Symbol Meditations.

Michael’s MissionRevealing the Essential Secrets of Human Nature

Speaking in the aftermath of World War I, Rudolf Steiner presents a series of lectures on the power and mission of the Archangel Michael. Steiner describes how humanity faces three dangers in the social sphere—spiritual life could flow into the “pit of mendacity” ruled by Ahriman; individual rights might descend into a luciferic “pit of selfish-ness”; and economics could sink into the cultural sickness and death of the Asuras. To prevent Western culture from perishing, it will need to turn toward the contemporary “threefold” approach to society.

Our Dead Memorial, Funeral, and Cremation Addresses

This book collects Steiner’s memorial, funeral, and cremation addresses, as well as a sampling of prayers and meditations for the dead. Steiner moves seamlessly between the sensory-physical, embodied world and the invisible, suprasensory, discarnate one. Speaking in an intimate, personal manner, he unites the living and the dead with practical and healing words. Those who seek comfort and guidance when grieving loved ones; those who seek ways of entering a real relationship with the dead – who wish to understand how the dead might influence our lives – will find valuable substance for meditation, thought and practice.

Paths and Goals of the Spiritual Human BeingLife Questions in the Light of Spiritual Science

Speaking to audiences in Denmark, Germany, and France, Rudolf Steiner discusses a wide range of topics—from positive and negative human soul capacities, true self-knowledge, and karma to changes in human consciousness; from ancient times to the modern era, all in the context of Christ’s incarnation on Earth. Although the lectures in this volume were given to a variety of audiences, ideas recur from different perspectives and in different contexts, with strong thematic links that hold them together. These lectures offer tools to bring a contemporary spiritual approach into our lives.

Speaking both to the general public and to small groups of medical pro-fessionals, Steiner offers new insights into our understanding of human organs, as well as the efficacy of healing substances such as arsenic, sul-fur, arnica, and essential plant oils. He studies a broad range of specific medical conditions, offering advice on cancer, hysteria, rheumatism, gout, skin eruptions, typhoid, diabetes, hemophilia, syphilis, gonor-rhea, asthma, glaucoma, leukemia, smallpox, insomnia, and childhood diseases such as measles.

Problems of SocietyAn Esoteric View, from Luciferic Past to Ahrimanic Future

In 1919, a year marked by strong social and political upheavals, Rudolf Steiner was deeply concerned with social questions. Whereas Steiner’s suggestions for social change may seem counter-intuitive to pragmatic thinkers, they will strike a resonant chord in many of those who seek deeper answers to the social problems of our time—problems that pol-iticians seem unable to remedy. Among the many themes that Rudolf Steiner discusses here are nationalism as a retrograde tendency; the tasks of Central Europe and Britain in relation to the East; the incarna-tion of Ahriman in the West, and the historical incarnation of Lucifer in the third millennium BC.

Spirit as Sculptor of the Human OrganismThe Influence of the Dead

In a wide-ranging series of lectures, Rudolf Steiner demonstrates the integral nature of spirit and matter and their manifold connections. Steiner explains how, through a process of evolving consciousness, humanity lost its knowledge and direct experience of the spiritual sources of existence but now needs to reconnect with them. Spirit is the essence and power of life that, in Steiner’s vivid image, “strikes a match in our whole being” when we allow it to inform us fully. Steiner tackles an eclectic series of subjects all united by the common theme of rediscovering how spirit pervades life.

Spiritual Beings in the Heavenly Bodiesand in the Kingdoms of NatureIn the architecture of Rudolf Steiner’s great cosmological temple, this extraordinary course of lectures forms the central pillar. For Steiner, what constitutes the world are “beings” – including the ground of the world itself, the “Father being.” The spiritual world is thus always a world of beings, and Cosmology is angelology. Spiritual beings define experience of the nature of reality itself. The reader is led through a series of meditations to recognize these beings and to come to know their deeds.

The Spiritual Hierarchies and the Physical WorldZodiac, Planets, and CosmosIn these remarkable lectures, Rudolf Steiner re-establishes the human being as a participant in an evolving, dynamic universe of living spiri-tual beings: a living universe, whole and divine. He does so in concrete images, capable of being grasped by human consciousness, as if from within. In this sense, Steiner’s spiritual science is a science of states of consciousness and the beings who embody them. The sensory percep-tion, or physical trace, is simply the outer vestment of the activity of beings in various states of consciousness.

The Sun Mystery and the Mystery of Deathand Resurrection Exoteric and Esoteric ChristianityThese lectures will be of particular interest to anyone wanting to comprehend Rudolf Steiner’s mature understanding of his mission: “enchristing” the world. For Steiner, the most important task for human beings is to learn to overcome death by uniting with the Christ, who overcame death. Humanity’s survival depends upon this enchrist-ing of the world. It is the purpose of anthroposophy to bring this reality into world evolution, to enable all religions and all human beings to experience the new reality.

True Knowledge of the ChristTheosophy and Rosicrucianism – The Gospel of John

Tackling the central dilemma of modern civilization—the polarization of science and spirituality—Rudolf Steiner seeks to broaden natural science through a comprehensive spiritual science. Steiner approaches this task from two perspectives. First, he deepens insight into Theos-ophy and Rosicrucianism, showing their relationship to science and religion. He also discusses the most esoteric account of Christ’s life: the Gospel of John. Whereas the focus is on the Gospel, basic tenets of Spiritual Science, human existence, and world evolution are also con-sidered, as are the concept of karma and the true nature of Christianity.

Unifying Humanity SpirituallyThrough the Christ Impulse

In the midst of World War I, Rudolf Steiner spoke of the spiritual unification of all human beings. The central motif in these lectures relates to the appearance of Christ on Earth—knowledge of his his-torical incarnation, as well as Christ’s manifestation in the present and future periods of human development. Other topics in this volume include the birth date of the “two Jesus children”; the wisdom of Gnos-tic teachings; the provenance of the Cross; the mysteries of the Christ-mas festival; insights into ancient Christmas plays, and reflections on individual consciousness of karma in the future.

A Way of Self-KnowledgeAnd the Threshold of the Spiritual WorldThis book is the true sequel and complement to that classic of inner development, How to Know Higher Worlds. It lays out in an accessible way the road to self-knowledge and to the world of spirit. Part one contains eight meditations that take the reader on a journey through human experience. Part two contains 16 short chapters in which Steiner provides aphoristic thoughts on trusting one’s cognition of the spiri-tual world. Together, they represent Steiner’s most personal statements about his own spiritual path. He speaks directly from experiences of cognitive research and explorations.

Universal Spirituality and Human Physicality Bridging the Divide

How do the soul and the spirit live in human physical bodies? In our materialistic age, in which the very existence of the metaphysical is widely rejected, such questions are rarely posed let alone addressed. In this series of lectures, Rudolf Steiner speaks in scientific detail about the connection of the subtle aspects of human nature—our soul and spirit—to our physical constitution. At the heart of this course are the well-loved “Bridge” lectures, which appear in English for the first time in their wider context. This volume also features Steiner’s classic lecture on the Isis legend and its renewal today as divine wisdom—Sophia.

What Is Necessary in these Urgent TimesIn early 1920, political, economic, social and spiritual chaos was every-where. The old world had fallen apart and would need to be rebuilt. Thus, Steiner worked tirelessly for the “threefold social order,” estab-lishing the first Waldorf school, helping to create businesses and addressing idealistic young people. Here, Steiner speaks in a new, direct “Michaelic” way, returning repeatedly to the importance of commu-nity, of meeting one another face-to-face, heart-to-heart, as individuals. Rather than seeking power and control, we are called to cultivate trust and receptivity.

The World of the Senses and theWorld of the SpiritIn this concise series of lectures, Rudolf Steiner shows how the human senses reveal the mysterious world of the will, which is at once a spir-itual and physical phenomenon. The senses act as a portal connecting our physical and etheric bodies with what Steiner refers to as worlds of “all-pervading will” and “all-pervading wisdom.” He elaborates this theme, giving some unexpected and delightful insights into the senses of hearing and sight, and in particular how we experience color. Among the many other themes tackled here, Steiner describes the transforma-tion of the human senses and organs.

Youth and the Etheric HeartRudolf Steiner Speaks to the Younger GenerationDuring the early 1920s, following the disaster of World War I, the youth of Europe faced many hardships and questions about their des-tiny in the world. Within the new School of Spiritual Science, Steiner created a section for the “Spiritual Striving of Youth.” In a series of essays and lectures, he clarified the idea of this workplace for young adults, and the goals it would attempt to realize. This volume collects much of this material, presenting Steiner’s vision for anthroposophy as he hoped young people would be able to take it up: as a spiritual, intellectual and socially transforming path.
