THE COLD WAR By: Sam Moore

THE COLD WAR The Cold War was the continuing

conflict between the U.S. and the USSR starting after World War Two and ending in the early 90’s with the fall of the Soviet Union.

Although the Soviet Union and the U.S. were the main countries in conflict, Turkey and Cuba were also involved.

THE BEGINNING

The Cold War began in 1945 with the Yalta Conference.

The Yalta Conference was held to discuss the dividing of Germany, formation of the United Nations, the issue of Soviet forces going to fight in Japan, and the future of Poland.

Harry Truman, Winston Churchill, and Josef Stalin were there to represent the U.S., Britain and the Soviet Union.

THE ATOMIC BOMB The United States began testing the

atomic bomb in 1939 under the Manhattan Project.

The first actual test was in July of 1945 After Development it was first used on

Japan one month later in August of 1945. Later on the Soviet Union began making

and testing their own bombs. The United States and The Soviet Union

were the only two countries with nuclear weapons at the time.

The Korean War After WWII Korea was split into two sections at the

38th latitude. The north was occupied by the Soviet Union and the Dictator Kim Il-Sung was appointed. The south was occupied by the United States and led by Syngman Rhee.

Korean War Pt 2 In 1950 Kim Il-Sung and the North Korean

Army invaded South Korea. Josef Stalin provided the military hardware to make this possible.

The United States and 15 other nations agreed to send troops and restore peace to the area.

The fighting eventually ended in 1953

The 1950’s U.S military became stronger in the air and not fully

based on the ground. Dwight Eisenhower is elected president. His view is

that if Russia invades Europe he will imply total war on the USSR. He ends the war in Korea in 1953.

The 1950’s Pt 2 Josef Stalin dies and power is taken over by Nikita

Khrushchev. United States sends U2 spy planes over Russia to

capture images of Moscow from over 70,000 ft. Khrushchev is invited to visit the United States in

1959. He takes a tour of the whole country. As he is leaving he says “long live Soviet, American friendship”.

The Vietnam War Started with the Viet Minh and French fighting in the

early 50’s. Soon after this Vietnam was divided and North

Vietnam (communist) invaded South Vietnam. Later the U.S. got involved in 1963 to prevent a

communist victory. In 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson calls airstrikes

and sends 536,000 ground troops by 1968. By January 1973 all American troops were

withdrawn. But the war cost us 58,000 lives and around 350,000 casualties.

Cuban Missile Crisis In the early 60’s the United States put nuclear

missiles in Turkey and Italy was ready to strike Moscow.

In 1962 the U.S. discovered that Russia had planted missiles in Cuba through spy planes.

After this America was thinking about attacking Cuba. But they decided to block all airways and seas in and out of Cuba to prevent more problems. Nikita Khrushchev said that these actions could result in a world nuclear war.

On October 28, 1962 both Soviets and Americans disassembled their warheads in Cuba and Turkey.

Space Race The Space Race was between The United States, and

Russia over who would be the first country to go to space or the moon.

During the 50’s the two countries realized that they could use the same technology in ballistic missiles to create aircrafts to explore space.

On April 12, 1961 The Soviets put the first human in space on the spacecraft Vostok 1. Soon after the U.S. put John Glenn in orbit around the earth.

Space Race Pt 2 Later in 1961 President Kennedy announced the

Apollo Program and that he wanted to reach the moon first. Although he didn’t live to see this I know his support and confidence in NASA helped the United States land on the moon first.

1969 was the last year of the race to the moon, Apollo 11 left earth on July 16 at 9:32 a.m. headed for the moon.

After safely landing on the moon Apollo 11 returned to earth 5 days later on July 24.

The Late Cold War In 1979 the Soviet Union invaded

Afghanistan to support the leader of Afghanistan and against the mujahedeen volunteers. This greatly increased tension between the United Nations and Communist Governments. The conflict lasted for 10 years.

Throughout the 80’s the Russian economy began to decline due to the fighting in Afghanistan and the tense race for nuclear power. The Berlin Wall was knocked down and communist countries started to fall apart. The Cold War finally ended in 1991 with the collapse of the USSR.
