Most people can open jars of food with little to no problem, a bit of pressure is applied as we’re twisting and then “pop”, the seal is broken and the lid comes off with ease. Occasionally though it just won’t budge, even after bringing some serious muscle power to the job…so how does one remove them?

Here are a few different ways you can conquer the problem:

1 A Rubber Glove Will Give You Extra Gripping Power.

2 Lightly moisten a dishcloth or towel and use that to grab hold of the lid and twist, this also gives you more gripping power.

3 Take a butter knife and give the lid a few good wacks along the top edge (turning the jar incrementally while you hit it), this should help break the seal and make the lid come off easily. Use the smooth edge of the knife (or the handle) against the lid and you’ll need to whack it (not light taps), but not so hard you shatter the glass. This is the method my grandmother taught me as I was growing up and it’s my “go-to” fix when problems arise, I’d say it has a 99% success rate.

4 Try breaking the seal by giving the bottom of the jar a good wack with the heel of your open hand. You may need to do this a couple times. You could also wack the bottom on the countertop (cover with a towel first to prevent damaging the surface), do so with enough force to break the seal without shattering the glass.

If the jar has been opened previously and the air-tight seal isn’t the problem, it’s likely stuck because syrup or sauce has crusted underneath the lid and around the glass rim. To fix this, a hot water soak should do the trick (as mentioned above) since it will help soften the crusted goo. You may also need something for extra grip when twisting (such as a rubber glove, elastic band, etc.). To prevent this problem in the future, wipe rim with a clean damp cloth before sealing.

The reason the government has been recom-mending high doses of calcium, is because it purportedly claimed to prevent osteopo-rosis (bone loss). This was largely based on the fact that calcium is one of the primary factors that give the bone its hard structure, but the studies have shown mixed results. It has even been suggested that calcium, when not taken in conjunction with other supplements, may be partially responsible for hardening of the arteries, through cal-cium deposits. We will point out a few fac-tors that are important to know when taking calcium supplements.

We don’t really need that much calcium. The latest study done in Sweden showed that the most effective dose was around 750 mg a day. Taking too much more could have a negative effect. Calcium is like a double edge sword, taking too little can create a deficiency, and thus cause bone loss. While taking too much can create calcium depos-its in soft tissue like the arteries, and thus cause hardening of the arteries.

To maximize the benefits of calcium and to make sure it doesn’t do harm, we need to take additional supplements that work in conjunction with calcium. More important than the amount of calcium we take, is what we take it with.

1. Vitamin D: Vitamin D is one of the most essential things to take with calcium; it helps absorption and proper utilization. In the study mentioned before, the people who had the lowest vitamin D levels had the most bone loss.

2. Magnesium: Magnesium and calcium need to be taken in the right balance. While calcium is a hardening agent, magnesium has a tendency to relax, countering the po-tentially harmful effects of calcium. The exact ratio of calcium to magnesium is un-clear, though many experts now believe it should be closer to a 1:1 ratio. Most people are deficient today in magnesium. While it’s pretty easy to acquire calcium from ones diet, especially those who eat dairy, it is dificult to receive adequate doses of magne-sium without supplementing.

3. Vitamin K2: Vitamin K2 (MK7) directs the calcium to the bones while at the same time keeping it away from the arteries, therefore preventing plaque buildup.There are additional supplements to take for bone loss, but these are the most impor-tant for calcium metabolism.
