welcome

a message of support

seniors programme

Welcome to the 6th Coca-Cola Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People. I am delighted to announce that Cinemagic will be returning to Dublin from the 13th – 19th May 2013.

We have programmed another action packed festival full of fantastic film screenings including special premieres, international feature films, documentaries, shorts, foreign language films and education screenings. Throughout the festival Cinemagic will also be offering young people the opportunity to take part in practical events including industry masterclasses and our extensive education programme for schools.

I would like to thank each of our sponsors and loyal industry professionals who have put their trust in us and remain committed to providing amazing opportunities for young people. And finally to you, the audience, thank you for supporting and being part of what is now the largest Film and Television Festival for Young People in the UK and Ireland.

I look forward to seeing you at the festival. Joan Burney Keatings MBEChief Executive, Cinemagic

Coca-Cola is proud to sponsor the Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People once again this year. The Dublin festival, which is in it’s 6th year, provides the opportunity to gain hands on experience in many arts based disciplines, giving a unique insight into the world of film and television and showcasing the talents of the young people of Ireland.

We are delighted to support activities for the 12 – 25 age group such as the excellent outreach programmes, talent labs, movie screenings and of course the masterclasses that provide a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn and gain experience from industry experts in a variety of cinematic and media disciplines.

We would like to congratulate Cinemagic on another action packed programme and wish everyone participating a very enjoyable and rewarding festival.

Robert Crabbe Events Manager Coca-Cola HBC Ireland Ltd.

In 2013 Cinemagic will be programming two separate festivals in Dublin. From 13th – 19th May we will be producing our ‘seniors’ programme and from 10th – 16th June will be producing our ‘juniors’ programme.

The ‘seniors’ event is designed to offer opportunities for young people aged 12-25. We have produced a comprehensive series of secondary school workshops as part of our education programme and our Talent Lab Masterclass series will offer unique opportunities for young people aged 16 – 25 to learn from industry leaders. Our public screening programme, based on the 2013 festival theme ‘Giants of Genre’, offers a fantastic array of films for all movie fans!

festival jury competitionOne of the unique aspects to Cinemagic is that the winning festival films are selected by juries made up solely of young people.

As part of Cinemagic Dublin we will be programming a short film competition that will see a young jury reviewing and critiquing new films from all over the world.

The Jury Competition will take place on Saturday 18th May. We are looking for 10 young people aged between 12 – 18 to judge the best short film for a teenage audience (judging will take place on Saturday 18th May, 10.30am – 4.00pm, venue – Filmbase).

Film Mentors – The Cinemagic programming team and local film critics from will be on hand to offer advice to our young jury members and guide them through the basics of film critiquing. Jury members will also get the chance to write reviews on the competition films screened. These reviews will then be published on the Cinemagic/Film Ireland website.

so how Do you become a member of our young jury? Well if you have a passion for film and like nothing better than going to the cinema then we would love to hear from you. Cinemagic is offering you the chance to spend a fun-filled day with the festival team helping to decide who the winner of this year’s best short film will be.

All you have to do is write us an imaginative letter or email (300 words max.) telling us why we should choose you to be a member of the jury. If you are selected you’ll get to watch all the films, meet professional film journalists and reviewers, as well as making lots of new friends.

rules:You must have permission from your parent/guardian to be a jury member. You will be expected to watch all the films in the competition. You must arrange your own transport to and from the festival. A Cinemagic panel will select the jury. The panel’s decision is final.

Send your letters or emails by Friday 26th April to Jury Competition, Cinemagic, 49 Botanic Avenue, Belfast BT7 1JL or email: [email protected]

The Department of Education and Skills is delighted to continue its support for the Dublin Cinemagic Film and Television Festival in 2013. Since 2008, the festival has provided a unique opportunity for children and young people to gain and insight into the worlds of film-making and broadcasting and to meet with industry professionals through participation in master classes and workshops. Cinemagic initiatives such as the cross-border jury, young film critic competitions

and cross border film camp provide young people from both jurisdictions on the island of Ireland with opportunities to engage and interact with their peers from across the island and to share their interest and opinions on films produced specifically for children’s and teenage audiences.”

Have you ever been put off seeing a movie because of a bad review? Have you ever been persuaded to spend money on a film based on the opinion of a stranger? Have you been angered at the scathing criticism labelled at a film you have loved or left in disbelief at the adulation heaped on a film you have disliked?

If you can answer yes then you have been directly

affected by the powerful voice of the film critic. Film journalism is an extremely influential cultural tool when it comes to shaping your opinions and actions.

In this workshop journalists from Film Ireland will explain the processes and techniques used when critically analysing film texts.

This workshop will give an overview of the Arctic and it’s amazing wildlife. Rod will then focus on the rapid change taking place there including the loss of Arctic sea-ice – a change that is driven by a warming climate. This is a result of a number of new influences, including oil & gas exploration and increased fishing & shipping. Some Arctic species, including the iconic Polar Bear, may be squeezed to the very margins of their existence. WWF is working to create solutions and a future for the Arctic where people and nature can thrive.

The workshop will take place after a preview screening of TO THE ARCTIC.

Special Effects is without a doubt a highly creative and fun area in make-up artistry. It allows you to create any creature you can imagine, as whacky or scary as your heart desires! It also serves a real purpose. With storylines becoming more sensational and technology more sophisticated, special effects is becoming an increasingly important element of both film and theatrical productions.

The most promising student in the workshop will be offered a prize to the teen makeup summer camp week run by MKF Institute! And participants of the workshop will be given 10 % discount on the MKF teen summer camps.

IFCO, the Irish Film Classification Office, is responsible for certifying all films and DVDs distributed in Ireland. They also have a role to play in how Video Games are rated. In years gone by many films were banned or cut. This has now been replaced by age-related classification, with IFCO providing consumer advice and

information to the public, and to parents in particular, through its website www.ifco.ie

All your questions concerning how and why films need to classified will be answered at this special presentation and interactive workshop event for Media and Film Studies students.

Long, long ago in the days of silent cinema, directors and actors used extravagant acts, dastardly villainous characters and virtuous but cunning heroines to entertain! Born out of popular music hall sketches and comedy duos, slapstick relied on hand-made special effects, acrobatic feats, comedy timing and a lot more ingenuity than is used in films of today. In this exciting drama workshop actor and community artist Charmaine McBride will lead participants in a number of ‘silent drama’ exercises that will illustrate the innovation and imagination needed when acting without words!

Storytelling continues to gain popularity as an educational activity. It is a very powerful way of communicating with our peers and portrays to others who we are and what our own stories are. It also provides an opportunity to connect with a group by creating a shared experience. This is vital in any community but more so in an educational setting where we are nurturing and fostering creativity. Now digital storytelling has gone mobile! Today there are numerous downloadable applications that provide tools for emerging mobile devices (iphone, ipad etc.) that enable students to participate in the long and rich history of storytelling. In this workshop we will explore these new technologies and their role in the evolution of storytelling.

This class will be facilitated by Brian Henry Martin, Producer/Director, Doubleband Films.

So you’ve got an idea for a film or television programme? What’s the next step? Brian will host a workshop in the morning showing some of the latest work produced by Doubleband Films as well as covering the do’s and don’ts of filmmaking. Participants will then be given a commissioning brief and asked to pitch their ideas to a local commissioning editor, who in turn will offer advice and feedback before picking the best pitch in the afternoon session!

Seventeen young filmmakers from Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Los Angeles joined forces from 22nd – 27th July 2012 to make a short film as part of Cinemagic’s annual International Film Camp.

The residential film camp, now in its third year, was based at the Corrymeela Centre in Ballycastle (shot on location in Castleroe, Ballycastle, and Ballymoney). The young people had just five days to produce the film.

The film camp participants, who had never met as a group before, took on the various roles required in the filmmaking process and were mentored by industry professionals including Director Michael Lennox (Hives, The Back of Beyond, Absence, Coming Up) and Director of Photography Ian Fox (Night at the Museum II, The Incredible Hulk, Face/Off ). *Ian also worked as camera operator on 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man!

The short film The Mantle premiered in September 2012 at the Opening Night of the Cinemagic New York Festival where a number of cast members introduced the film. The film was also screened during the Cinemagic Belfast Festival and as part of the Cinemagic Los Angeles Festival in February 2013 (Oscar Week). A number of the Cinemagic International Film Camp participants were selected as LA Ambassadors and travelled to LA to promote the film and take part in the industry focused activities within the Cinemagic Los Angeles Festival. Events included studio tours with Fox, HBO, Remote Control Studios and The Jim Henson Company. The young people also presented Academy Award winning composer Hans Zimmer with the Cinemagic award for outstanding contribution to film and television

The Cinemagic International Film Camp 2013 will take place this summer and Cinemagic will begin accepting applications from March 2013. For more information please email [email protected] or download the registration form from the Cinemagic website www.cinemagic.ie
