Shawano County 4‐H Camp Susan
4‐H Summer Camp: July 23‐27 Campers Grades 2—7
Youth in grades 2‐7 can a end our resident (overnight) summer camp program! Youth par cipants gain skills in: independent living, encouraging a welcoming environment, apprecia on for the outdoors, compe ve and non‐compe ve recrea on, visual and communica ve arts opportuni es, team‐building, and interac on with posi ve role models (well‐trained teen Shawano camp counselors). Youth enrolled in 4‐H and youth not enrolled in 4‐H are welcome at camp. Fi h graders will have a day hike learning various camping & hiking skills. Sixth and Seventh graders can par cipate in an op onal campout (weather permi ng.)
Camp is a great deal: $90 (enrolled 4‐H members) and $100 (youth not enrolled in 4‐H.) This fee includes bus transporta on to and from Camp Susan (North of An go), all meals, lodging and camp ac vi es. Sixth and Seventh graders can add a 2 hour trail ride on horseback for an addi onal $20. Some 4‐H Clubs help members pay for part of the cost of camp from their treasury. Encourage your club to discuss this idea at your next mee ng. Sponsorships are also available from Shawano County 4‐H Leaders, Inc. for those in financial need. Contact Megan at the UWEX Office at 715‐526‐6136 for more informa on. Registra on will be through 4‐H Online, and will open on April 1st. Your registra on is considered complete when we receive payment. Mark your calendars and call your friends! We hope to have you join us at Shawano County 4‐H Camp in 2019!
Thank you to the three Shawano County 4‐H youth who
a ended the Fire & Ice Teen Camp at Lions Camp on
February 8th– 9th. The youth met teens from 5 other
coun es, learned more about the many looks of
Wisconsin 4‐H, explored their “sparks”, and how to build fires outside in the
FREEZING cold. Teens also enjoyed playing ping‐pong, cards, ea ng snacks, tubing,
snow‐shoeing, and watching a movie. Thanks for being great representa ves on
behalf of our county!

4‐H Leaders, Inc. Mee ng
Every leader is encouraged to a end 4‐H Leader’s Mee ngs. This is a great opportunity to learn the latest news and find out what’s available to your members. The next mee ng is on March 25th at 7:30pm in Rm 202 of Hillcrest Elementary, 1410 Waukechon, in Shawano. Remember to enter door G. In addi on to regular business, open 4‐H Flea Market Food Stand dates will be discussed and assigned. BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR CLUB REPRESENTED! Highlights from the February 18th Leaders Mee ng not already listed in the Cloverline:
Old Business
Shawano County Fair –The 2018‐21 Fair Premium Book is a FOUR YEAR fair book. As an adapta on to 2018, in 2019, the rabbit and poultry projects will look different in the online version.
Review of 4‐H Leader’s Inc. Bylaws—Bylaws will be posted on the website and sent via e‐mail to all Community Club leaders for review before the March mee ng.
Super Saturday Review—Leaders agree that this event is worthwhile and has a variety of classes, especially for Cloverbuds and elementary – middle school aged youth. Ideas included older youth bud‐dying with Cloverbuds and/or offering more com‐plicated projects, and/or teaching methods to be implemented in a later project to be more en cing for middle/high school aged youth.
Food Stand Commi ee Member Sandy Phillips gave an update on Food Stand Manager and Assis‐tant Food Manager hiring. The official hire will be released at the March Leaders Mee ng.
New Business
Educa onal topic for discussion was Community Service, with a brief overview of Wisconsin 4‐H State Guidance from Megan. Moral of the story – funds raised in the name of 4‐H need to be spent on 4‐H members and programs (including out‐reach.) Service Learning and Community Service should be intertwined; for example, instead of giving a $100 check to an organiza on, talk to them about what items they need purchased in the amount of $100. Have a commi ee purchase
the items, and schedule someone to speak on behalf of the organiza on and accept the dona‐
on. There should be learning happening, not just a check being wri en out. Please also con‐sider inves ng directly in your members—consider covering fees to 4‐H Camp, Arts Beat, other project/leadership related ventures in 4‐H. Megan also gave a few points to think about con‐cerning risk management and community ser‐vice. If you have ques ons, please follow up with her directly.
4‐H Food Stand Update—There are remaining Flea Market Open dates for 2019; call the office for spe‐cifics. Discussion was held around Community Clubs coverage of the 4‐H Food stand. A mo on was passed that each community club cover the 4‐H food stand for a full day during flea market season. If your club has not yet signed up for a day in 2019, please contact the office about what is available, or one may be assigned at the March Mee ng.

Record Books
Record Book Update 4‐H record keeping helps start the good habits of se ng goals, planning, organizing, evalua ng and improving communica on skills. Records reflect your character and ability to get things done. Families, please remember that a few well‐chosen pictures are a quick, effec ve way to communicate what was done in 4‐H. Take pictures throughout the year to be put in the record book. Record books are considered complete without project stories or photos, as long as the member has told about their project work through project record sheets. However, award‐winning books almost always include a picture and/or a story of your project year. If you are be er at doing “paperwork” on the computer, feel free to access all the project
records on our website at h ps://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/shawano4h/record‐book‐info/ .
Since you are already doing community service through 4‐H, make sure to create a Community Service sec on in your record book. This will qualify you for the Community Service Award!
Please get your literature and project record sheets request to Tami in the Extension office.

What do your members do to serve their club, community, county and world?
The Waukechon Wildcats do many projects throughout the year to serve others. We have served
meals at Sam25 and visited nursing homes to play bingo. During our January mee ng, our
Cloverbuds made Valen nes for Veterans. We will be sending those to the Veteran’s Home in King.
We have also placed flags on veteran’s graves for Memorial Day. Last year members walked dogs at
the Humane Society and we hope to do that again this spring. During June Dairy Month, our club
hands out cheese and milk to customers at BMO bank. This helps to promote June Dairy Month.
Each summer we have a club ac vity day. This is an extended mee ng where members can come
and learn new things. We have made homemade bouncy balls, studied rocks, and made magnets and slime. This is a great chance for
members to get to know each other be er and have fun. There have been many opportuni es over the years to help others through
dona ons. Our club always steps up in these situa ons. We have given gas cards to Safe Haven, collected food for SafeParc, and donated
school supplies to local schools. Each October, the Town of Waukechon holds a Bohemian Fes val and parade. It is a me of fellowship for
the people in the township and surrounding areas. Our 4‐H club has taken over the food that is served and par cipates in the parade. Each
spring and fall our club does an outdoor clean up at the Town Hall. This helps the township in which we have our mee ngs. In December, we
go Christmas Caroling throughout the Town of Waukechon. Residents love to have the club come and many have requested that we return
year a er year.
What’s the most popular snack served at your mee ngs?
We have a snack at the end of each mee ng. It would be hard to choose one favorite… We
like popcorn, and ice cream. We like cookies and vegetables. Basically, we eat whatever the
snack families bring! We are going to start doing some farm to table type of snacks. Last
mee ng we had raw milk. In upcoming mee ngs, we will have raw honey, maple syrup, and
other items produced by our own families. We are excited about this new venture during
snack me!
What’s your favorite ‘get to know’ you
ac vity to do with your members?
At each mee ng, members line up on either
side of the room for roll call. All members
answer a monthly ques on in order to
show they are in a endance. Ques ons
range from favorite project area, favorite
winter ac vity, to if you could only have
one item with you on a deserted island,
what would it be? By doing this each
month, we are able to put names with faces
of the kids as well as learn something new
about each member. It is comical to hear
the teenagers who claim sleep is their
favorite ac vity while the younger kids are
sledding and playing in the snow.
What ac vi es does your club do to promote 4‐H?
In February of this year our club decided we wanted to do an ice ska ng adventure to the
Crawford Center. We also decided we wanted to invite all other clubs from the county to
join us. Mee ng other kids who love 4‐H as much as we do, is important to us. We had a
fantas c me and several other clubs joined us for the fun. Our club painted a barn quilt a
few years ago which hangs on a barn in the Town of Waukechon. We are proud to be part
of this special aspect of Shawano County. The Waukechon Wildcats also make themselves
visible to our township. We are the main organizers of the Bohemain Fes val held in the
Town of Waukechon each October. It is important to our club to par cipate in county wide
events which promote 4‐H. We always place a yard display in front of the Town Hall during
4‐H week. We also make a club planter to display at the Fair. We believe the Fair is a great
opportunity to promote 4‐H in the county. We regularly organize chances to purchase
shirts and hats to our club families. Wearing these clothing items always helps to promote
4‐H. During June Dairy month, we also make a display for the lawn at the Town Hall.
Recrui ng new members is also important to our club. We have seen great growth this
year and are excited to get to know all of our new families.
What do you do at your mee ngs to
welcome new members and visitors?
All new members and visitors are introduced to
the group and welcomed by all members with
applause.

Consider doing the following: Reduce pollu on: carpool, walk or bike. Buy recycled content products and recycle them whenever you can. Turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Don’t let the water run while brushing teeth. Keep drinking water in the fridge – it’s always cold ‐ rather than running the faucet each me. Purchase permanent items rather than disposable. Shop with reusable bags.
