COA BOARD AUTHORIZES FORECLOSURE FOR 207 CANA CIRCLE

TIME FOR FALL PRUNING

We want to remind everyone that as we get into the Fall season it is the perfect time to give your shrubs and trees a good aggressive pruning and to clean out overgrown vegetation.

Overgrown shrubs prevent airflow; promote growth of mold, mildew and moss; provide homes for critters; and contribute to rotting wood around windows. We are trying to prevent damage to both gutters and roofs from branches laying on roofs and clogging gutters.

We have identified several units where vines and other overgrown vegetation are growing up under the siding and into the walls. Please be aware of overgrowth around your unit.

Our community is home to a number of Ash trees which are infested with the Ash Borer and need to be regularly treated. Many of those trees have dead branches that need to be removed for safety reasons. In some cases, the trees may need to be removed now or in the near future.

You will find the updated guidelines for shrubs and trees in the 2017 Homeowners’ Manual on pages 21-24.

Remember to dispose of your trimmings properly. Do not place in the drainage ditch along the dog walk on Cana. Have your contractor remove trimmings, place in a bag for LSI on Mondays near your driveway, or you can take them yourself to a city yard trash location.

Thank you for your cooperation.

TED THALER APPOINTED TO FILL COA BOARD VACANCY

Ted Thaler, 809 Marquette, will fill the unexpired term of David Hiner for 2017-18. Though Ted was raised in New Jersey, he graduated from Tusculum College in East Tennessee and has lived in Nashville since 1976. Ted worked for 30 years with the State of Tennessee in the mental health field, the last years inspecting and licensing mental health and substance abuse facilities. He owns rental property, including his home for 28 years just three blocks from the Cloister. Prior board experience for Ted includes serving on the board of the Tennessee State Employees Association as a Regional Vice President and on the board of West End Synagogue. “I look forward to meeting and working with my fellow board members to maintain and improve our Cloister Community,” Ted stated. We appreciate Ted’s willingness to assist the Cloister in this role.

NEW NES ELECTRIC METERS

Some of us got an email about Nashville Electric Service’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters? NES is gradually switching from analog electric meters which are no longer manufactured.

AMI technology allows meters to be read remotely, and service can be easily turned on or transferred without a service call. Information is automatically and wirelessly sent to NES over a secure network.

The new meters automatically send an alert when your power goes out allowing for faster response time. And, since the meters are read remotely, fewer trucks are on the road which reduces pollution, fuel consumption and traffic.

That’s a win-win!

COMCAST IS BRINGING FIBER OPTICS TO THE CLOISTER

Many Cloister streets and yards are marked with multi-colored arrows, lines and mysterious initials. Comcast is on site providing an upgrade from coax cable to fiber optic to provide faster and more reliable telecommunications service. The Board and CMA have been informed of Comcast plans and will continue to monitor the project.

Optical fiber has huge advantages over existing copper wire installations for telephone, television and internet. We’re told fiber optic is preferred over electrical cabling when high bandwidth, long distance, or avoiding electromagnetic interference are required. And the price for fiber optic communications has dropped considerably since 2000, making it more cost-effective than installing a copper based network today. There will be no price increase for this new technology.

Where possible, Comcast will use the existing conduit for the new cable, eliminating some digging. But in some areas that is not possible. Though cable installation is being done now, the estimate for when the actual service will be available is the first quarter of 2018. At “cutover” time in 2018, all users will be out of service from ½ to 1 day. We are assured that we will have adequate advance notice, and when service is restored, there will no action required on the part of our residents.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact our Property Manager Hanna Gritsak at 615-600-4911 or Erica Sullivan at 615-600-4913.

COMCAST SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE

Free Friday Night Movies

Thanks to Barbara Swift and Beverly Wallace for providing this Friday night activity twice a month for residents. Movies begin at 6:45 p.m. and usually run about two hours.

Two stories inspired by real life mark October’s films, both featuring Tom Hanks. October 6th, “Sully,” details Capt. Chesley Sullenberger’s successful landing of a US Airways flight, loaded with 155 people, on the Hudson River in January, 2009.

October 20th presents “The Terminal,” based loosely on the story of a British Iranian stuck at Charles de Gaulle airport. Director Steven Spielberg puts his visa-less character at JFK where he survives endless days in this strangely comedic experience.

EVERYONE IS INVITED FOR COVERED DISH DINNER OCTOBER 10th

Roast pork (not barbecue) is the entrée for the October 10th dinner, with visiting and appetizers at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.

Bring your favorite appetizers, vegetables, salads, and desserts (enough for 6 please). You’re welcome to bring your own beverage or drink the decaf coffee and tea provided.

We hope new residents who have moved into the Cloister during 2017 and have not taken advantage of their free meal will attend and enjoy a meal on us during October or November. The registration ladies have a list of all new residents so come on even if you haven’t received an actual ticket from your Good Neighbor representative.

The rest of us will pay our $4 per and enjoy all the delicious dishes prepared by the good cooks of the Cloister.

Mark your calendar for remainder of the year:

November 14th – Turkey and Dressing

December 10th – Christmas Party, 2-4 pm

We don’t wish to alarm—but residents

should know that a bobcat was recently spotted walking on Cana Circle. Please be careful letting your small pets out. West Nashville has both coyotes and bobcats which typically are spotted in early evening or at night-time.

Our meeting in September was another lively discussion that just almost edged up to the political. We all enjoyed Rick Bragg's memoir, All Over But the Shoutin', about growing up poor in northeast Alabama. For the most part, the book is a tribute to Bragg's mother. It had more serious tone than that of his monthly contributions to Southern Living. We meet again on October 19th at 11a.m. in the Clubhouse parlor. The book will be Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson or any Mark Twain that strikes your curiosity or fond memory. No doubt that conversation will be memorable! Please remember that you need not read the book to come and pontificate (please, not), interject, and listen. We are a loose group. Well, we are loose in the flexible sense, not necessarily in the way our mothers forbid. Come, you won't regret your time spent!

JOIN STITCH ‘N CHAT ON FRIDAY AFTERNOONS, 2-3 P.M.

About 15 years ago, a group of residents decided to get together on Friday afternoons to do handwork and socialize! Through the years many have participated by knitting, crocheting, embroidering, doing needlepoint, or just chatting.

In 2000, after 36 ½ years working for Ford in their Quality Control department (and other positions), Leroy Smith, 245 Cana, moved to the Cloister. His mother was the original occupant at 440 Siena, and his sister, Rosemary Padgett, moved into that unit at their mothers’s death.

Leroy, who loves working with his hands and was taught to both crochet and knit by his Mom, became a proficient knitter, even entering his items in State Fair contests. Leroy became a leader for Stitch ‘n Chat and estimates he has taught 15-20 Cloister residents to knit over the years, including Annie Sangervasi and Sophia Keller. And he stands ready to assist other knitters like Betty Lingerfeldt and Nancy Johnson with issues they have with their projects.

Leroy’s sister, Rosemary, who recently moved to assisted living, was a Stitch ‘n Chat participant and was a recipient of some of Leroy’s knitted clothing (skirt, top, jacket, etc.). And several friends and family luckily received some of his ceramic products.

The Stitch ‘n Chat group invites any resident to join them on Friday afternoons 2-3 p.m.—even just to chat!
