Rhone Valley

This is one of the great rivers of Western Europe. The region is basically separated into the Northern Rhone and the Southern Rhone. In the North, where Hermitage, Croze-Hermitage and Cornas are found, the grape variety is Syrah. The Southern Rhone wines of Gigondas and the famous Chateauneuf-du-Pape are typically a

blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, and Mourvedre.

Bordeaux

“Premier Grand Cru Classe” (First Great Growths)

In 1855, by request of Napoleon III's Exposition Universelle in Paris, wine brokers

were asked to rank the wines of the Médoc according to price. The brokers agreed on a five-class classification of 61 of the leading Medoc châteaux and the most

prominent Graves château, Haut-Brion.. Saint Emilion was later classified in 1955 and the wines of Pomerol have never been classed. It is also interesting to note that the 1855 classification listed only four first growths; Chateau Haut Brion, Margaux,

Lafite and Latour. Chateau Mouton was not elevated to first growth until 1973.

Château Haut Brion

Château Haut Brion Pessac-Leognan (Graves) 1982 $900.00

The Wine Spectator wrote: “This is the best Haut-Brion since 1959 and perhaps one of the best Bordeaux we have ever tasted. It has loads of character, packed to the brim with fruit and tannins. A wine for the next century… 99 Points.”

Château Haut Brion Pessac-Leognan (Graves) 1995 $600.00

The Wine Spectator wrote: “A splendid Haut-Brion with wonderful elegance. Refined tannins. Dark-colored, with beautiful ripe berry, cherry and very smoky nuances. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, plush texture on the finish.…92 points

Château Haut Brion Pessac-Leognan (Graves) 1996 $625.00

The Wine Spectator wrote: “Seductive Haut-Brion. Complex, with cinnamon, vanilla, cherry, berry and dried fruits on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a polished, caressing texture.…91 Points.”

Château Haut Brion Pessac-Leognan (Graves) 2001 $500.00

The Wine Spectator wrote: “Intense aromas of violets, berries and spices follow through to a full-bodied palate, with layers of supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Very classic in style. All in elegance and length. I like it better than the 2000…95 Points.”

This distinguished and celebrated grape produces all of the great reds from the

Burgundy region of France. Although it is known to be a fragile and difficult grape, at their best, wines made from Pinot Noir have a subtlety and elegance unmatched by any other wine. In recent years, it has been widely planted in the cooler climate areas of Carneros, Russian River, and Sonoma County areas of California and the

Willamette Valley of Oregon.

Zinfandel

Although this red grape is almost exclusively planted in California and considered to be a truly American varietal, it origins are most likely Italian. It has been shown to be almost identical to the Primitivo grape of southeast Italy. In more recent studies,

it has been concluded that zinfandel probably came from the Crljenak gape of Croatia. Zinfandel lends itself to many styles of wine from the famous “white” or blush, to light and fruity Beaujolais styles, to ripe, jammy, rich, and long lived.

Family Vineyard, Colgin, Dalla Valle Maya, Grace Family Vineyards, Harlan Estate, Screaming Eagle and Shafer Hillside Select as well as one Chardonnay: Marcassin.

Bryant Family, Napa Valley 1998 $1260.00 The Wine Spectator wrote: “Supple, polished, rich and complex, with

pretty anise, currant, blackberry, herb, sage and dill. Very well done… 88 Points.”

Vineyard 29, “Grace Family Clone”, Napa Valley 1997 $ 700.00 Robert Parker wrote: “Sweet, rich, full, and concentrated-a deep ruby/purple color is followed by a pure black currant fruit intertwined with tobacco, vanillin, and spice. This lush, full-bodied effort displays sweet tannin, and cuts a powerful swath across the palate. The finish reveals high extraction and harmony. 94 Points.”

Meritage and Bordeaux Style Blends

In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify handcrafted wines blended from the traditional "noble" Bordeaux varietals primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. "Meritage" was coined to identify wines that represent the highest form of the winemaker's art of blending, and distinguish these wines from the more generic “red table wines."

Red Wines of America Large Bottle Formats

Many consider the larger bottle format to be the best for aging wine. This is due in part to a greater volume of wine with the same amount of oxidation. Many of the

names given to these bottles are taken from biblical characters.

Jeroboam was King of Israel during the traditional year of Rome's founding (753 BC) (4 bottles in Champagne, Burgundy and Rhone/ 6 bottles in Bordeaux) Rehoboam was a son of Solomon who became king of Judah in 933 BC. (6 Bottles in Burgundy and Rhone) Methuselah was an antediluvian patriarch described in the Old Testament as having lived 969 years and whose name is synonymous with great age. (8 Bottles in Champagne, Burgundy and Rhone) Salmanazar was an Assyrian monarch who reined around 1250 BC; about the time the science of iron smelting was first imported into his kingdom from Anatolia. (12 Bottles in Champagne, Burgundy and Rhone) Balthazar ("King of Treasures") is the traditional name of one of the Three Wise Men, the other two being Melchior ("King of Light") and Gaspar ("The White One"). (16 Bottles in Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone) Nebuchadnezzar originally nabu-kudurri-usur meaning "Nabu protect the boundary," became King of the Chaldean Empire in 604 BC. (20 Bottles in Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone)

Wines of Colorado

The history of wine making in Colorado dates back to 1883 in the Grand Valley. It is now home to over forty wineries. They have gained much popularity in recent

years. Most of the vineyards are located on the western slope in the Grand Junction area where the warmer growing conditions and rich soil favor not only grapes, but apples, peaches, pears and cherries. Colorado wineries produce a wide variety of

wines including table wines, fruit wines and even Mead wine.
