Messages from your UMW conference leaders

    Greetings, United Methodist Women,

Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas will be here in a few days.

Whew! Where has 2015 gone? It has been a great year. Hats off to Donna

Moore and the Program Committee for a great Annual Day. Dr. Cynthia

Hopson inspired us to go out and try 52 new things in 52 weeks. That

challenged me to look at what needed to be “new” in my life. What about

you? Are you looking for new ways to be in mission. Check out the

United Methodist Women website www.unitedmethodistwomen.org. for

    some ideas.

The Nominations Committee has worked hard to put together a great Mission Team for 2016. I look for-

    ward to our work together.

I hope you have heard about some new ways to “live into the 150 year legacy” of United Methodist

Women. I know many units have begun looking at ways to participate in this celebration. We are enter-

ing the 146th year since those strong women met in Boston. Many changes have taken place since then

and many more are on the way. As we prepare for the changes ahead, we want to strengthen our connec-

tion with each other. An organization is only as strong as its weakest link. Let’s make sure we have no

weak links. We share a 146 year legacy of strong women, women who were not afraid to dream big

dreams. Can you dream big? How big?

It is time to be turning in your mission giving for the 4th quarter. We have had good response to date but

we have not made our pledge. Keep giving!

If you missed MOR, you missed a great time. Some of us were out in the mission field helping others.

Some stayed at Lakeshore working on projects, helping others. If you missed it check out the pictures on

    Facebook.

Several of us traveled to St. Louis for Leadership Development Days. It was a great experience as al-

ways. All the District Presidents were able to attend. I hope they were able to bring back some ideas for

    the coming year.

Our Southeastern Jurisdictional Meeting is fast approaching. It is June 3-5, 2016 in Charleston, South

Carolina. We have chartered a bus, so if you are interested in traveling to Charleston, contact me.

January 9 is set for our Conference Leadership Development Day. Everyone is invited to come. I hope

we will have some information that will benefit you at the Local, District as well as the Conference

level. More information will be coming soon. Please save the date!

Until we meet again, go share Faith, Hope and Love in Action.

    Delores

    From your president:

    Executive Secretary

United Methodist Women is actively preparing for the church’s 2016 General Conference in

Portland, Oregon, May 10-20. As in previous General Conference meetings, United Methodist

Women will again have an active role in the General Conference prayer ministry. One prayer

ministry activity planned is to offer quilted finger prayer labyrinths for delegates and guests.

We are seeking United Methodist Women members who enjoy quilting to assist us by making

the finger labyrinths. Do you have women in your conference, district or local units who would

like to help by volunteering to quilt finger prayer labyrinth squares for the delegates and

guests? We need 2,000 and the variety of labyrinths made by women from all over the country

will bless the recipients and lend to the support and outreach we hope to extend. Attached is a

pattern for the finger labyrinths. Each labyrinth will be tagged with a card identifying that

the labyrinth is “handmade with love and prayer by United Methodist Women”.

Please circulate this request and the attached pattern among the United Methodist Women with

whom you have contact. Share that anyone interested in quilting the finger

prayer labyrinth squares should email [email protected] with an estimate

of how many they might be able to make and to receive further instructions for shipping the

    completed labyrinths by the deadline.

Deadline for submission of labyrinths is January 15, 2016. If there are questions, email me

    at [email protected].

    Thank you.

    Becky Dodson Louter Executive Secretary

United Methodist Women Gear Up for Second Annual Day of Giving March 23 United Methodist Women groups around the country are getting ready for the second annual Day of Giving on March 23, 2016, as part of the organization’s five-year 150th anniversary culminating in 2019. The March 23 Day of Giving honors the day in 1869 when a small group of women braved a legendary torrential rain to gather at Tremont Methodist Episcopal Church in Boston, Massachusetts, and organize for mission. The women established the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society, a predecessor of United Methodist Women, and galvanized women around the country to raise money to send a doctor, Clara Swain, and a teacher, Isabella Thoburn, to India as missionaries to serve the women of that nation. A Day of Giving gifts go to The Legacy Fund, a permanent endowment that will support the mission outreach of future genera-tions of United Methodist Women as they address the needs of women, children and youth of their day. Members in every con-ference participated in the first Day of Giving in 2015, giving more than $100,000 through online gifts, toll-free calls, smart-phone texting and mailed-in checks. “In 2015 our foremothers standing beside us through $1.3 million a year in interest on endowments that they established to support mission with women, children and youth today. That’s a significant legacy,” said Martha S. Knight, treasurer of United Methodist Women. “The Day of Giving is an opportunity for women today to give that kind of legacy to their daughters, and granddaughters and nieces as they make mission happen with women, children and youth of their day. Thanks be to God.” A Day of Giving will be a 24-hour giving festival. Members and friends may give:

Conference United Methodist Women Liaisons will be notified of contributions from women in their area — but the amount of the gift will always remain confidential. United Methodist Women members and friends may consider giving $15 or $150 or even $1,500, in recognition of our upcoming 150th anniversary, or $18.69 or $186.90 or even 1,869, in recognition of the year of United Methodist Women’s founding. A Day of Giving gifts are 100 percent tax deductible. Contributors will receive an immediate thank you and a printable tax receipt for 100 percent of their donation. Spread the word! As with our foremothers in 1869, in the 21st century, women still need to organize for mission. Make it happen with a gift to The Legacy Fund on March 23, A Day of Giving.
