Dear People of Saint Anne,

On this Holy Family Sunday, between Christmas and

New Year’s, we find ourselves in the middle of that

season when: some of us can’t get enough of our

family, some of us have had enough of our family and

some of us pine for family members who have gone

before us or live too far away to visit.

The Christmas season can bring out the best in families,

and the not so best – as well. Christmas certainly

draws families together but is also has a way of

reminding us of the problems and challenges that

divide us—be they estrangements, grudges or the

unsettled arguments that divide us and keep us from

being one in heart and mind.

On this Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and

Joseph, let us pray for families far and near.

Sirach, in our First Reading, offers a code of family

behavior, good for every generation. He lists values

like honor, respect, prayer, reverence, obedience, care,

kindness and consideration of others.

Saint Paul lays out a similar home vision for family life.

He calls us to put on – like a garment of virtues: heart-

felt compassion, kindness, humility, patience,

forgiveness of those who offend us, gratitude and a

willingness to let Christ rule our hearts.

On the eve of a new year, we might do well to ask our-

selves if and how these virtues need to find a home in

our hearts and in the story of our shared family life in

the coming new year.

90th Anniversary of our Parish School: I call your

attention to the 90th anniversary celebration of our

Parish School on Saturday, April 14th. Saint Anne

Parish School was the first Catholic elementary school

in Lake County in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please

add the date to your calendar.

Please check out page 18 in this week’s Clarion for

details regarding the Mass of Thanksgiving and the

celebration that will follow at Avante Banquet Hall in

Fox River Grove. More information will follow in the

coming weeks.

The Beloved Retreat: Have you ever wondered if there

is more to life than meets the eye? You go to work,

come home, attend to family life details, go to bed and

begin the same routine all over again. Outwardly, you

appear to be fulfilled and ready to begin the next day.

In the midst of your daily schedule, you may wonder if

God has a plan for your life or perhaps you are seeking

a deeper relationship with Christ or a greater under-

standing as to the way your Catholic faith connects

with your daily life.

For 18 years, Saint Anne has offered the gift of the

Kairos retreat to our high school teens to enable them

to grow in the deeper themes of our Christian vision of

faith and how Christ present in their everyday lives.

Now, we are beginning a version of Kairos for adults.

The Beloved Retreat is an adult moment for a renewal

of one’s faith … an upper room experience for adults … an

opportunity to hear a message of hope, an adult

experience as to what it means to be a disciple … and to

find a new sense of purpose and direction in the one

and only life you have been given.

Keep the weekend of Friday, March 2nd through

March 4th open for this new adult renewal of faith,

hope and love in your lives and hearts … more details

in the coming weeks.

On a final note, Pope Francis, this last Wednesday,

warned that there is a real danger in taking Christ out

of Christmas. In the name of a false respect for non-

Christians, which often hides to marginalize the faith,

every reference to the birth of Christ is being

eliminated from the holiday.

But in reality, the Pope said, this event is the one true

Christmas … without Jesus, there is no Christmas …

He is at the center, then everything around him, that is,

the lights, the songs, the various local traditions and the

local foods, all come together to create the atmosphere

of a real festival … without the memory of Christ at its

heart, the Christmas story loses its sting and true

meaning …

I love this Pope …

Father Bernie Pietrzak

Worship—LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney

SINGING THE FAITH: CHRISTMAS SONGS THAT PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL

You’ve heard me say before that the Christmas stories in Matthew and Luke are constructs from late in the time the

gospels developed. They were written as what Dominic Crossan calls “overtures,” collected stories about the origins of

the Messiah that foreshadow who he became as an adult, and reveal the meaning of the incarnation and themes of the

gospels in those stories. So, through the annunciations to Mary (in Luke) and Joseph (in Matthew), we understand that

Jesus is God’s idea, that God is his father and through him, the Holy Spirit is revealed to the world. Through shepherds,

we begin to understand that Jesus is for those not part of the religious “in” group. Through the Magi, we begin to see that

Jesus is for the whole world, and that not all faithfulness to God originates in Judaism. The manger itself reveals the

centrality of eating to the gospel, so that even in this earliest story about Jesus, he’s found asleep in a place of dining, even

if dining by animals.

Birthdays are always celebrated about who a person is now, but they also reflect on who a person is and who we hope they

might become. There is an unfortunate (in my opinion) overemphasis at Christmas on Jesus the baby, an overemphasis

that leaves out who Jesus is to become. The very dating of Christmas is a result of the calculation of when Jesus died. It is

the death and resurrection of Jesus that define his story, and even give us a reason for reflecting on the incarnation. Some-

times. our Christmas music can also overemphasize the baby over the man, over the Savior. Sometimes publishers make

the problem worse by bowderlizing texts and making them even more child-centered than the author intended, or ignor-

ing parts of hymns that refer to the meaning of Christmas rather than focusing on imagined details of Christmas event.

One good example is the way that the song What Child Is This, usually sung to the medieval tune Greensleeves, has been

treated in hymnals. The way that it is presented in Gather, for instance (some other Catholic hymnals are the same), is that

there is a refrain taken from the end of the first stanza, used for all three verses.

“This, this is Christ the king, whom shepherds guard and angels sing.

Haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.”

It’s beautiful, of course, but using those words as a refrain keep us from singing the poet’s words in the other stanzas,

which bring out more of the gospel story, including his death. Here is the second stanza, first with the false “refrain”

added, probably to keep us from singing the “depressing” part of the story, then with the original text, which I’ve added

back in for our singing at Mass.

“Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding?

Good Christian, fear, for sinners here the silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce him through, the cross be borne for me, for you.

Hail, hail, the word-made-flesh, the babe the Son of Mary.”

Many songs of the social gospel, including some of our best Christmas songs, come from roughly the same time frame that

brought us the social criticism of Charles Dickens and others, the middle of the 19th century. Seeing the great chasm

growing between rich and poor at the height of the industrial revolution, Christian songwriters saw in the poverty and

displacement of the Child of Bethlehem, God’s solidarity with the poor, and offered hope through their work. The lyrics

of songs like It Came Upon the Midnight Clear really sound like they were written for our world today:

“Yet with the woes of sin and strife, the world has suffered long,

Beneath the heavenly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong.

And warring humankind hears not the tidings that they bring;

O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing.”

Tuesday’s feast of St. Stephen reminded me of Good King Wenceslaus, not available in our hymnal, but from the same era.

Its final stanza carries the message of the social gospel, as it tells the story of a king who followed in the footsteps of his

Lord to help those in need:

“In his master’s steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted.

Heat was in the very sod which the Saint had printed.

Therefore, Christians all, be sure: wealth or rank possessing,

Ye who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessing.”

Faith Formation and Education

When Pope Francis visited America, he often left his motor-

cade or procession to reach out to children with disabilities,

hold the children and bless him or her.

By words and example, the Pope has calls us to extend the

love and the care of Christ to the weakest among us,

including those who have developmental disabilities.

At Saint Anne, we respond to that call through our SPRED

ministry, which welcomes young adults with develop-

mental disabilities to develop a greater sense of God’s love.

IF YOU FEEL INSPIRED BY THE POPE’S EXAMPLE,

PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING THE SPRED MINISTRY.

This is not a request to teach; it is an invitation to experience the peace and beauty of God’s presence in our lives in

a very unique way. We encourage both men and women to join us. Anyone over the age of 21 is eligible to

become a volunteer Helper Catechist, and no experience with persons with disabilities is needed.

We currently have a waiting list of young people

who want to join Saint Anne SPRED,

but cannot until we locate

one-on-one Helper Catechists for them.

As a Helper Catechist, you will not have to lead

any lessons, but rather will form a relationship of

friendship and inclusion

with one of our young adults.

CALLING ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS!

All middle school students are invited to take part in a two-part series titled Called to ProtectTM.

Called to ProtectTM is a program designed to help children identify their physical, emotional and

behavioral boundaries and to help them understand when those boundaries are being violated. The

program doesn’t stop there; they will also receive instruction and participate in role play activities to

develop the skills to protect themselves and to communicate with a parent or other trusted adult.

All of our children should feel safe and secure; helping them to understand what they are feeling

and empowering them to handle it in appropriate ways is critical.

Called to ProtectTM is presented in three parts:

● Identifying physical, emotional and behavioral boundaries and understanding when they

have been violated

● What to do if someone violates those boundaries

● Ways to respond to the situation

Participants should plan to attend both parts as they build on one another. Sessions will be held on

two consecutive Tuesdays, from 6:30-7:45 p.m., in Thane Hall (lower level, Parish Center) as follows:

Tuesday, January 9th Tuesday, January 16th

There is no fee for this program, however, registration is required.

To register, please provide the following information to Carla Czyzewski at

[email protected] prior to Friday, January 5th.

● Participant names and grades (6th through 8th)

● Parent name, email address and phone number

● For parents, please indicate if you are willing to serve as an adult table facilitator

KAIROS—FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS

MARCH 1ST-4TH

There are experiences that simply change one's life forever. For over 35 years, teens who

have gone on the Kairos retreat have said that it was the definitive experience of their lives.

Do you find yourself wondering about what life really means and if there is more to it than what

you’ve experienced so far? Do you have questions about your Christian faith—what it really means?

Led by senior teens and adult leaders, we will spend three days exploring these issues.

The cost for the retreat is $350.00 which includes 3 nights lodging, meals and materials at Loyola University Retreat

& Ecology Center, Woodstock. Limited financial aid is available for parishioners. Registration is on a first-come

basis with priority given to parishioners; non-parishioners are welcome to register.

SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

EXTENDED DAY CARE PROGRAM At Saint Anne Parish School, we offer an affordable and flexible before and after school care

program. Included below is a summary of our program which is available to all students in

preschool – 8th grade.

What is Extended Day Care? Extended Day Care is an after school program for students to

engage in activities with other students as part of an extension of the school day. The

program is run by a licensed and beloved substitute teacher, Mrs. Michelle Woods, and

long-time program director, Mrs. Pat Rasheff, along with additional staff. The program

runs from 7:00-8:00 a.m. and 3:00-6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. There are only a few

exceptions when after school care does not meet such as Parent/Teacher Conference days.

Snacks are provided and there is quiet homework time with assistance from teachers.

What is the cost? Extended Day Care offers affordable rates and multi-student discounts.

EXTENDED CARE AND HOMEWORK CLUB FEES REGISTRATION FEE: $25.00 (Payable each year per family and non-refundable)

What is Homework Club? Homework Club is an extension of Extended Day Care. Students can

attend on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 3:00-4:45 p.m. Students work quietly, supervised

by a licensed teacher and snacks are served. Homework Club is a great way for students to obtain

help in classes or finish homework so they can enjoy the rest of the day. Some testimonials from

parents include:

"I want to thank the after school Homework Club.

This program has helped my son learn proper ways of completing his homework

and studying for tests. We are so thankful for the Homework Club."

Mrs. Eryka Accordino

"I have two girls who attend Homework Club. Both of them really enjoy going as they have the opportunity to do

their homework together with their friends, and if they have a question, there is a teacher to ask. This service is a

God-send. It's nice to pick up the kids from school, go home and make dinner knowing that homework is done …

no more stressing over it. Thanks, Homework Club!!"

Mrs. Hayde Federighi

For more information or questions about Extended Day

Care or Homework Club, please email the Extended

Day staff at [email protected]. As

always, please feel free to contact the office staff for

By Clem Aseron Sharing the Living Story

This long gospel pericope1 contains many images that

speak to both the gentile mind and the Jewish

sensibility. A few examples: recall that Luke was

writing to a mixed community of Judean (Jewish) and

gentile converts; at vv.22-24, he explains to the latter,

larger group who are unaccustomed to the Judean

practice of bringing the male2 to the Temple to be

consecrated to the Lord God. Circumcising and naming

the boy (v.21) is the public claim to honor that a

husband acknowledges paternity in his Judean society

where women were held as untrustworthy; compare to

the Matthew version of this same story (Matthew 1:18-

25) where God’s angel commands Joseph. The Holy

Family is faithful to the covenant – they follow the

prescriptions of the Law in bringing the child to the

Temple to present him to the Lord; God is faithful to the

covenant – God, the Master of the Universe, is faithful

by being present to this little family in the very keeping

of their tradition.

All is gift; that child belongs to the Lord and is only

“given” to the parents to care and nurture. Judaic law

stated a woman remained “unclean” for forty days after

the birth of a male child; she could not enter the

Temple, engage in religious acts or have intercourse

until she offered a lamb and young pigeon in sacrifice.

The poorest of people were permitted to substitute a

second pigeon for the lamb. Joseph and family are

faithful to their tradition.

Through Simeon and Anna, Luke again addresses both

the gentile and the Judean (Jewish) ear in his

community. Simeon awaits the consolation of Israel

(v.25) but at vv.30-32, he sees the salvation prepared in

the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the

Gentiles (note the plurals) as well as glory for God’s

people, Israel. The universality of Jesus is emphasized

through Anna as well; she becomes the first evangelist,

proclaiming about the child to all who look for the

liberation of Jerusalem. They are faithful to covenant

love by their living a mindful awareness to the young

parents (26, 27, 28, 38); God’s fidelity to the covenant is

revealed in the words and actions toward these two.

Note Luke's careful insistence on the ordinariness of

this family. They follow the law, both civil and

religious; they are pious, they are poor, and the child

grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of

God was upon him.

Look at how the psalm refrain joins the First Reading

and Second Reading to the Gospel as well. God takes

the initiative with Abram and promises covenant

fidelity that the aged childless couple not only will have

an heir, but they will be numerous as the stars, and so it

happens; later, as the Second Reading proclaims,

Abraham keeps covenant by acceding to the Lord’s

command to sacrifice his heir, confident that the Lord

kept covenant the first time and that The Lord remembers

his covenant forever.

Sharing the Living Story

So What?

We are nearing the end of the Christmas season.

The Psalm response is

The Lord remembers his covenant forever.

What do you make of the fidelity of these people and the fidelity of God

in light of the insistent voice running through Luke

that The Christ comes to all and not just The Chosen?

Do those insights impact the way we see The Christ coming to Muslims,

to the Bahai, to atheists, to abortionists, to those who wage war?

Works consulted: Social-Science Commentary on the Synoptic Gospels, Bruce J. Malina and Richard L. Rohrbaugh;

The Cultural World of Jesus, Sunday by Sunday, Cycle B, John J. Pilch; Sing a New Song, Irene Nowell

1 A biblical passage quoted in the Lectionary whose verses may be discontinuous (see readings I and II) ,

or have addenda (In Reading II, “Brothers and sisters,” is not in the bible text) or be otherwise emended. 2 c.f. Numbers 18:16 3 The book of readings with passages selected in an ordered fashion from both testaments and read at worship

4 The coming of the Holy Spirit 5 A talented figure in the history of the Israelites; he was a priest, a prophet and a judge and anointed David to be the first

king.

In keeping with the thrust of the Lectionary3 toward

Pentecost,4 note that three times, Luke mentions the

influence of the Spirit on this holy man, Simeon (vv.25-

27) before Simeon delivers his two oracles. The holy

woman, Anna, in keeping with her role as prophet, calls

Israel towards redemption for she spoke about the child to

all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem (v.38).

This family of two is faithful to covenant love.

In the final verse of this pericope, Luke refers to the de-

velopment of Samuel5 in the Hebrew scripture (see 1

Samuel 2:21, 26) in effect, preparing his readers to note

the influence of the Spirit on Jesus when he rises to pro-

claim the Isaiah passage in the synagogue (Luke 4:16);

The Lord remembers his covenant forever.

Three sets of people are faithful; God is faithful, for The

Lord remembers his covenant forever. Covenant secures

both to one another.

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments

ranks among the most important gifts that we have.

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with

those who, in some way, are part of our community.

Therefore, please note the following:

Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local

hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a

minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at

847.382.2148.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family

prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our

faith community.

Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing

their 1st child

Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic

Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint

Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before

scheduling Baptism

Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at

Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before

scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the

meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at

847.382.5300.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation

process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the

wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as

soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a

requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time

of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are

typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be

registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation

program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and

Education office at 847.620.3067.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school.

Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the

two-year preparation program. For more information, call the

PATHS office at 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by

appointment.

Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to

belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs,

perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means

to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and

honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you.

Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding

the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).

Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend

an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the

Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st

Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when

there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish

office at 847.382.5300.
