TIMETABLES AND LESSONSStudents who enrol in this program receive a total of 16lessons per semester, usually resulting in an average ofeight lessons per term. Lessons are provided during schoolhours, and operate on a rotating timetable so that studentsdo not miss the same class each week.

INDIVIDUAL LESSONS• Instrumental music students generally have weekly 30minute lessons however we also offer 45 minute and 60minute lessons for advanced students

• Lesson times are posted on the Instrumental MusicNoticeboard one week in advance, and are emailed tostudents.

• It is highly recommended that students working towardsAMEB Grades 4-6, or Year 11 Solo Music Performancehave 45 minute lessons

• It is highly recommended that students working towardsAMEB Grades 7-8, or Year 12 Solo Music Performancehave 60 minute lessons.

PAIRED AND GROUP LESSONS

Paired or Group lessons are a great way for beginners toenter the program with friend/s. Research shows that thecontinuation of music study occurs more so due to socialaspects which is why paired and group lessons are oftensuccessful. Whilst it is possible for students to have sharedlessons on most instruments, it is not as viable and thereforenot offered for; Piano, Oboe, Bassoon, Tuba and DoubleBass.

Girls may only be placed in a paired or group lesson ifthere is another girl/s of a similar standard who alsorequest a paired or group lesson on the same instrument. In the event that you request for your daughter to have apaired lesson and a suitable partner is not available, yourdaughter will be given a 20 minute individual lesson until asuitable lesson partner enrols in the program. In the eventthat you request for your daughter to have a group lessonbut there are only two students requesting to learn in thesame format on the same instrument, you will need toenrol in paired lessons.

ENSEMBLE INVOLVEMENTThe Academy of Mary Immaculate offers a balancedapproach to musicianship, which includes the developmentof ensemble skills (playing in a group) as well as individualinstrumental training.

All girls learning any instrument (including guitar, piano andsinging) are expected to rehearse on a weekly basis andperform in at least one College Core Ensemble. This is acompulsory condition of registration and no exceptions willbe granted.

• College Core Ensembles include; Academy Choir, JuniorStrings or Senior Strings, Junior Band or Concert Band

• Extension Ensembles are also run at the College, whichstudents may request to be a part of. In some instancesthese ensembles are auditioned. Extension Ensemblesinclude; Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, Rock Band.

• Girls must attend all rehearsals and performances oftheir ensemble. These are usually held at lunchtime orafter school.

• If absence is unavoidable students are expected tocontact the Ensemble Director giving 24 hours’ notice of absence via the Ensemble Director’[email protected] email address.

• Students are also expected to attend concerts andexcursions where their ensemble is performing and otherpublic performances as scheduled from time to time.

AIMS OF THE PROGRAM

The study of music is one of the most enriching activities that a young person can engage in. It is a great opportunity forpersonal, creative and intellectual growth. The purpose of our Instrumental Music Program here at The Academy is for ourstudents to discover and enjoy the beauty of music, and through that pursuit to make the best possible individual progress ontheir chosen musical instrument/s. It is also a program that seeks to foster a culture of commitment and team spirit throughensemble involvement, as well as personal growth in self-identity through solo performance. Throughout this musical journeywe aim to achieve high standards of performance.

In order to achieve these aims, we ask parents and students to carefully read the program information and conditions ofregistration listed below, before signing and returning the registration form attached. In signing and returning the registrationform, you are agreeing to abide by the conditions of registration listed below.

MUSIC PROGRAM 2018

Page 3: THE CITY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS · The College can arrange hire of selected brass and woodwind instruments, if your daughter does not have her own instrument. If you hire an instrument

• Students enroled in the Academy Instrumental MusicProgram are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsalsfor their ensemble. If a student has another ongoingcommitment at the same time as their scheduled rehearsal, negotiated attendance levels should be made with theEnsemble Director and Performing Arts Learning Leader.

• Please aim to schedule medical appointments on non-rehearsal days.

• Girls with unsatisfactory ensemble attendance may havetheir registration reviewed.

PRACTICE

• Regular, daily, focused practice is essential for individualprogress, and we ask that parents commit to encouragingtheir daughters. Learning an instrument can bechallenging and can result in an unwillingness topractice. To help your daughter develop a growth mindsetthere may be times she needs your support andencouragement (even when it sounds bad!).

• Regular practice of ensemble parts also makes ensemblerehearsals more productive and successful.

• A regular practice routine is essential to a student’sdevelopment as a musician. This should be paired withcommunication between parents and the instrumentalteacher.

MUSIC DIARIES

One of the best ways of recording practice is via a MusicDiary. Students can purchase a music diary to keep recordof their progress/practice. Music diaries are available fromthe Performing Arts Learning Leader for $10.00. Otherteachers may encourage students to video record theirpractice and upload it to a practice blog.

ABSENCE FROM LESSONS ANDENTITLEMENT TO MAKE-UP LESSONS

Twenty-four hours’ notice of any absence is required inorder for a make-up lesson to be granted. If a student is unable to attend a lesson for ANY reason(including illness) then 24 hours’ notice of the absencemust be provided to both the Music Secretary([email protected]) and to the InstrumentalTeacher (via their ‘@academy.vic.edu.au’ email address). Ifthis procedure is followed, the student will be provided witha make-up lesson at a mutually convenient time.

Unfortunately, if 24 hours’ notice of absence is not providedvia the procedure described above, the lesson will beforfeited and a make-up lesson will not be provided(regardless of the reason for the absence).

Absence due to Tests/Assessments, Excursions/Incursions and Camps

Students are not expected to miss a test or an assessmentto attend an instrumental lesson. As indicated, 24 hours’notice in the case of any absence must be provided, but asa courtesy and to assist in the smooth running of theprogram, it would be appreciated if students who cannotattend lessons due to College commitments would providetheir instrumental teachers with as much notice as possibleof these absences – generally a minimum of a week’snotice of the absence is appropriate unless this isgenuinely not possible.

Extended Absences Due to Illness, Travel or Other Reasons

In the case that the student will be absent from school foran extended period of time (due to illness or other reasons),the parent/guardian should contact the Performing ArtsLearning Leader by email, [email protected], inorder to make alternative arrangements. If this is not done, any lessons missed during this time will be forfeited.

Staff Absences
