The ESL Program is comprised of structure (practical grammar and writing) and communication sections. The communication section is broken up into reading and verbal (listening & speaking) classes.

In the basic-level verbal classes, listening and speaking skills are introduced through the use of dialogues, pictures, and pantomime. Students learn basic phrases in order to deal with common situations and topics in an English-speaking environment.

ProgramsESL Program

In the intermediate-level verbal classes, communication beyond everyday English is emphasized as students move on to more complex language skills. Class materials focus on current events and topics to practice newly learned language functions.

In the advanced-level verbal classes, the focus is on both informal speaking and formal presentation skills related to public speaking and everyday communication in the English-speaking world. Students will be fine-tuning their oral communication skills to enhance both the accuracy and fluency of their English language abilities.

The TOEFL® iBT Test Preparation Program prepares students for all four sections of the TOEFL ® iBT exam.

The program provides effective test strategies for all of the questions on the reading and listening sections of the exam. Students also practice how to read quickly and effectively, and they learn how to take notes efficiently to succeed on the listening section. All six speaking tasks are practiced extensively in class and recorded. The instructor listens to student speaking samples and provides advice for improving word choice, speaking style, and organizational structure.

Unlike programs offered at other schools, students practice writing for the exam by doing one essay per week in class, and they receive scores and comments from the instructor. The instructor corrects and marks essays for misspellings, grammar mistakes, and organization to accelerate progress in writing.

In order to fully prepare students for the conditions and pressure of the examination, students receive partial reading and listening practice tests every Friday, and receive three full practice tests in the program. Practice tests are reviewed and scored in class. Full practice tests are scored by the instructor with comments and suggestions.

The TOEFL® iBT Preparation Program prepares students for all four sections of the TOEFL® iBT exam by presenting and practicing strategies to help them improve their reading, vocabulary, listening, speaking and writing skills. In addition, students are given practice in critical

thinking and note-taking skills. This class is beneficial for students who need a TOEFL® score to get into a university or graduate school program and students who need a TOEFL® score to enter a profession in the U.S. (such as Nursing or Pharmacy).

The GRE® / GMAT® Program is designed to help advanced non-native speakers of English improve their verbal, reading, and writing scores on either the GRE® or GMAT® test. Students receive individualized instruction on the test that they are preparing for, as well as group instruction to improve overall comprehension. This class will cover test-taking strategies and review the verbal portions of both tests.

Vocabulary is of paramount importance to both exams, and to students’ university careers following the exam. For this reason, vocabulary is studied for one hour every day. Three hours a week are dedicated to writing techniques, strategies and practice. The two question types, Issue and Argument, are taught in two-week cycles to allow for focused practice of both writing questions. Reading comprehension is also practiced three hours per week. Special attention is dedicated to teaching reading techniques and how to extract meaning from an article’s structure. The reading texts that students will be responsible for analyzing are university-level academic writings. This section stresses the development of test-taking habits that maximize scores for a given level of English.

The TOEIC® class is designed to help non-native speakers of English improve their TOEIC® scores with a unique system that covers the 7 parts of the TOEIC® listening and reading tests. Students receive individualized instruction, as well as group instruction to improve overall English comprehension.

The class uses authentic TOEIC® questions in listening, grammar, vocabulary, and reading. Students participate in simulated test situations and review strategies for the various types of questions they will encounter on the test.

MLI’s TOEIC® class also helps students become more successful in an actual business environment. Vocabulary related to business situations is learned every day.

The class is most useful for:• Students who wish to work in business in English-speaking countries• Students who need a TOEIC® score to get a job in their own countries

• Students who wish to learn business-related vocabulary

The class uses a textbook that contains vocabulary that most commonly appears on the TOEIC® test. Up to an hour a day is spent on learning new words, understanding and practicing them in context, and reviewing word forms.

Every Friday we have activities with our students. Activities are important to MLI because we want our students to explore and expand their use of English. Learning to speak English effectively takes place not only in the classroom, but outside, in an environment where speaking is essential for communication. My school, MLI, is a great place to improve your English. It is hard to name what I like about my school because I have a lot to tell. I have been here for 6 months now and I can feel my English has improved. That’s because my teachers are amazing. They know a lot of things and I learned not only English but also history, politics, science and culture in class.

I learned about foreign culture while improving my English. I used to take pronunciation class and now I take Business English class. Those are very effective. The best thing about MLI is the teachers. The students and staff are so friendly that it makes me come to school every day.

Hey guys! My name is Seifallah Charni. I am studying at Mentor Language Institute, which is located in Beverly Hills. I’ve been studying in this school for 7 months. While you are thinking about which school is best to improve your English, I would like to share my experience about this school. First of all, teachers here are professionals. They teach us, but at the same time I do not feel pressure from them. Right now I am studying TOEFL and I can feel improvement in my English skills. Teachers encourage us and I never feel uncomfortable asking questions. Secondly, we do not study all the time. There are a lot of different activities in the school, such as trips to Las Vegas, Disneyland, camping and lots of other activities as well. Also, at the end of the term we have a great party, where we can enjoy time outdoors and meet a lot of people from different countries who study in our school. Moreover, it has a great location! As I like shopping so much, it’s a pretty convenient and nice area to relax after class. There are plenty of advantages to studying at MLI. Come to our school and check it out!! Hope to see you at MLI!!! Have a great time!

I have been studying at MLI for almost 6 months, and I’m proud of this school. It helped me a lot to improve my English skills. The program range at MLI is very complete, from ESL to Business and TOEFL® classes. The schedule is also very flexible and suits anyone’s needs. Staff are always there if you have any problems or suggestions and the school has very professional teachers. The activities promoted by the school are awesome. We always have a lot of fun, and I hope to come back again.

Diego Dell’era - Italy

MLI is the best school in California. The location of our school is very comfortable and nice. We are so close to Rodeo Drive and the Beverly Center! Also the school provides many different activities, so we have a chance to study, and at the same time, observe Los Angeles. MLI provides a wide range of classes at different times which allows students to choose a comfortable schedule for them.

I’m taking the TOEFL class – it’s very proactive and useful. Our teacher is so professional. His classes are always very interesting and helpful. The classrooms have everything you need for your education – computers, speakers and so on.

The atmosphere at the school is warm and friendly. The MLI staff are really kind and ready to help in any situation. So guys, welcome to MLI! You will enjoy the West Coast and at the same time improve your English skills and meet me.

Anna Belentsova - Russia

This is my school, MLI! It’s on Wilshire and Santa Monica. It’s a good location. The first time I came here alone and I couldn’t speak English. Three months later, I started to speak English, and now I have a lot of friends in my school and outside the school. They are 18-45 years old. They are Japanese, Brazilian, French, Italian, Korean and others. My school staff is very friendly, and they always help all of the students. I live in a dormitory. It is close to my school and shopping malls. Every week our school has activities. For example, we go to Disneyland, Universal Studios, Las Vegas and shopping outlets. We have BBQ parties sometimes. Life is very fun in LA.

Yildiz Zulaloglu - Turkey

I can say that studying at MLI was a unique experience in my life. More than being a student, I had the opportunity to help MLI’s teachers. With this added experience, I was able to develop my English skills even more. During my stay I learned a lot, personally and professionally. Not only did I improve my English skills, but I also shared a lot with people from different cultures, made new friends and experienced a routine I never had, enriching my own sense of culture and independence. At MLI I made friends from all around the world, lived priceless moments and had an experience that I’ll never forget.
