The FA Challenge Cup First Qualifying Round - Replay
Winchester City Football Club is a committee run members club and as such is an unincorporated association.
THE CITIZENS POST
FROM THE BOARDROOM
Good Evening All and welcome to tonight’s game in the FA Cup First Qualifying
Round, as Frome Town are the visitors to the Simplyhealth City Ground. We
drew 1-1 in Somerset on Saturday and Frome now come to Hampshire for the
replay.
The club are still unbeaten in 90 minutes in all competitions this season so far,
for the First Team, Reserves and Under-18s, and we are hoping that run
continues tonight.
After tonight, we welcome Paulton Rovers to the Simplyhealth City Ground on
Saturday 15th September before Hartley Wintney come to Winchester in the
Hampshire Senior Cup on Tuesday 18th September. Then Moneyfields visit us
just 48 hours later, as The Citizens then take to the field in the FA Youth Cup.
We are delighted to welcome George Short back to the Simplyhealth City
Ground. George re-joins the Citizens from Bracknell Town. We have seen
youngster Brett Cunningham recently join the club from Farnborough whilst
Kieran Winman is the latest youngster to leave City, dual-registering with
Bemerton Heath Harlequins.
Thank-you all for your support at Frome on Saturday. A trip to Merthyr Town is
at stake for the winners this evening.
Please make some noise for the boys tonight as we aim for a place in the Second
Qualifying Round of this famous competition!

DAVO’S DIARY
Good evening and a warm welcome to tonight’s exciting game cup reply against Frome Town!
We wish their players, management and supporters a pleasant evening and a safe journey home.
Saturday was a tough battle for us against a good side from the league above in Frome. It was a
rollercoaster of a game; Frome started better, we dominated the middle and they finished stronger.
We went ahead with a nice finish by Tyrell Mitford only to be pegged back by an equalizer and then
having to withstand the last 10 minutes or so with them pushing for a winner. I have no doubt
tonight’s game will be any less keenly contested and we are going to need to be at our very best in
order to get through against a higher league opposition.
In player news; we were without Danny King on Saturday due to illness but will hopefully be
welcoming him back tonight. We also see the return of our Talismanic striker Oli Bailey following his
three game suspension. Gilbert, Carr and Rawkins are all still missing but we have this week signed the
midfield player George Short, who returns to the club following a spell at Winchester City a couple of
years ago and is a player that I have personally rated for a long time and am delighted to have signed
him but unfortunately, he is a few weeks away from full fitness so will have to wait a little longer for
his debut.
Let’s hope we can go one step further than Saturday and progress through to the next round with
another monumental performance which we know we are capable of producing but we will need our
twelfth man in full voice in order to achieve this!
I hope you all enjoy the game.
Up the Citizens!

THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – FROME TOWN FC
CLUB HISTORY Frome Town, known at the Robins, was formed in 1904 and played in the Wiltshire Premier League. 1904-1950
• Early success came in the form of three Somerset Senior League Championships in between 1906 and 1911, whilst in between the Wiltshire League Championship was won in 1909-10.
• The Club reached the Fifth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in 1911-12 under the old format of the competition, which was today’s equivalent of the Third Round proper losing 4-1 at Southport Central, in front of a crowd of 3,366.
• Frome entered the Western League in 1919 and immediately became Division 2 Champions while the Somerset FA Senior Cup was won in successive seasons 1932-22 & 1933-34 & for a third time in 1950-51.
1950-1999
• Frome have always played at Badgers Hill and the ground held its biggest gate in 1954 when 8,000 spectators saw Leyton Orient win 3-0 in the FA Cup First Round Proper. In the same season promotion was won to Division One of the Western League & was beaten finalists in the inaugural Western League Cup.
• Promotion was gained back into the Western League after a spell in the Wiltshire League again in 1962-63 where the club remained until last season. Success was gained in the Somerset Premier Cup in 1966-67 with victory over Yeovil Town in the final and the cup was shared by the same two teams in 1968-69.
• Frome’s greatest triumph came in 1978-79 when the club won the Western League. The Championship was secured by losing only once in the last 32 matches. The League Cup followed in 1979-80.
• Another vintage year followed in 1982-83 with victories in both the Somerset FA Premier Cup and the Western League Cup, plus runners-up in the league.
• Following those heady days, Frome flirted all too often with relegation from the Premier Division, and were relegated in 1995-96 and the Club spent several years in the lower reaches of the First Division.
1999-2010
• The Club was re-structured off the field in 1999-00 but despite the ground being upgraded unfortunately success on the field did not follow with a re-structure of the league saving the Club from relegation into County football.
• Frome improved rapidly and after finishing third continued upwards as they won promotion back to the Western League Premier Division after a six year absence the following year & also reached the final of the league cup.
• With Frome struggling to win at home during the 2003/04 season the Club turned to the help of a local “White Witch”, Titania Hardie. This move brought huge media interest from all over the World. It worked immediately and they went on a magnificent run that saw them go on to finish 3rd in the league.
• The 2004-05 season saw the Club celebrate their centenary & events on the field saw the Robins reach the Quarter-Finals of the FA Vase before eventually losing 3-0 at Jarrow Roofing.
• A seventh, third and fourth placed finish saw the club continually improving and then runners-up spot in 2008-09 secured promotion into the Southern League for the first time in the Clubs history. The Somerset Premier Cup was also won with a 3-1 win over rivals Paulton Rovers.
• After a poor start to life in the Southern League and a quick change of manager Frome went on an incredible unbeaten run and finished the season in sixth place and just three points from a play-off place. 12 months later and Frome beat Sholing 1-0 in the play-off final to secure promotion to the Southern Premier Division.
2010-2018
• The summer of 2011 also saw the Club receive the prestigious FA Charter Standard Community Club status in 2012 after a great first season in the Southern Premier Division the Club were awarded the title of Community Club of the year for Somerset and then also picked up the regional award that took them into the national final.
• Over the last two seasons the Robins have retained their league status with a further three managerial changes during that time while also finishing as runners-up in the Southern League Cup and the Somerset Premier Cup.
• 2014/15 was a tough season for the Club and results on the pitch meant that it went to the last day of the season to secure their safety picking up a point at home against St Neots
• 2016/17 and 2017/18 have seen the Robins finish with their two highest positions in their league history. Honours

THE CITIZENS POST MATCH REPORT – BY MALCOLM
CLARKE
WCFC 1-1 GOSPORT BOROUGH Winchester went out of the league cup on penalties to Gosport Borough after the teams finished level at 1-1 after 90 minutes. With an FA Cup tie at Frome on the Saturday Winchester fielded a completely different team to Saturday although the regular first team players were in attendance. However, Jake Rawkins, Sam Roberts who captained the team on the night and new signing Brett Cunningham were all in the Winchester starting line-up which also included player manager Craig Davis. Gosport for their part also had an important FA Cup game on the Saturday, but although former Winchester favourite Robbie Flooks did not feature, their small squad effectively represented their first team with the two best known players being player coach Matt Tubbs who started the match and player manager Craig McAllister who was on the bench. Gosport's team included roughly half of the team that had beaten Metropolitan Police three days earlier. Before the game a minute's silence was observed for Hampshire football association stalwart John Ward who recently died. The first half was mainly Gosport's and they took the lead when their number 5 Harry Medway headed home a corner from the left. Nradley Stone, Connor Hoare and Samuel Lanahan also came close to scoring for Gosport, while Josh Corner made an important block to keep them out, but it was 1-0 at the interval. During the second half Winchester rallied well even though they lost Jake Rawkins to a shoulder injury and he was replaced by chairman's son Alfie Trodd. Lamar Koroma forced a save from Patrick O'Flaherty and Craig Davis had a free kick deflected for a corner. They drew level when a corner from the left from Craig Davis was headed home by Sam Roberts. Interestingly enough both goals were headers by number 5's from corners from the left and at the same end of the pitch. Gosport still had chances of their own in the second half and rallied particularly strongly after Winchester scored, but the young Winchester team who even had some youngsters unavailable for this match showed great determination and can take much credit for the fact that they were able to finish level after 90 minutes against a squad of players from a higher division. After 90 minutes the match went straight to penalties and although Craig Davis scored Winchester's first spot kick and Gosport missed theirs, three penalty misses out of 4, with only Lamar Koroma converting combined with the fact that Gosport converted their next three spot kicks meant that with the score 3-2 in the penalty shoot-out Gosport did not need to take their fifth penalty.

MALCOLM’S MUSINGS We welcome Frome Town to Winchester for tonight’s replay. While we beat Bournemouth Poppies to reach this
stage of the competition Frome Town received a bye as a result of being in a higher league. Although this is Frome’s
10th consecutive season as a Southern League club I do not think we have ever played them in a league game as they
are currently enjoying their 8th successive seasons in the top flight of this league their other two seasons were in
2009/10 and 2010/11 when they played in the Southern League South and West Division were 2009/10 and 2010/11
when Winchester were playing in the Wessex League. In their promotion season of 2010/11 Frome bear Sholing
away from home in the playoff final. Frome were formed in 1904 and before the first world war had won the
Somerset Senior League and Wiltshire League. Following this war, they joined the Western League and spent nearly
all of the next 90 years in this league prior to their elevation to the Southern League in this competition. In 1919/20
they won Western League Division 2, but failed to gain promotion, and prior to the second world war they were
always in division 2 when the league operated with two divisions. In 1946/47 they were placed in Division 1, but
were relegated after one season and did not return to the top flight until 1954/55 when they finished runners up,
but their stay in the top flight lasted just four years. A season later they left the Western League only to return four
years later when the league operated with only one division. This time they were more successful and after finishing
in the top six five times in the next thirteen years qualified to play in the Premier Division when it split into two
divisions. Three seasons after the split into two divisions they were Premier Division champions, finishing one point
above Bideford despite five other teams scoring more league goals than them. In each of the next five seasons they
finished in the top six, but the next 12 seasons saw them finish in the lower half of the table before being relegated
back to Division 1. Initially they struggled in Division 1 and finished bottom of the table in 1999/00. However, the
following season they finished third and returned to the Premier Division as champions in 2001/02, and after
finishing second in 2008/09 (their fifth top four placing in six seasons) they were promoted to the Southern League.
Two seasons later they earned the right to play in the Premier Division and their highest position in eight seasons at
this level is 8th achieved in 2016/17. In 1954/55 they won through five rounds of the FA Cup, but were beaten by
Leyton Orient in the 1st round proper. In 2004/05 they reached the quarter finals of the F Vase where they lost to
Jarrow Roofing, while in 1984/85 they won through four rounds of the FA Trophy before losing to Boston United in
the 2nd round proper. They have also won the Western League Cup, Somerset Premier Cup and Somerset Senior Cup
on more than one occasion each. Their manager is Danny Greaves (not the Danny Greaves who is the son of Jimmy
Greaves). Danny joined the club from Bradford Town whom last season he led to the last 16 of the FA Vase, at the
start of the current campaign. In the 2003–04 season, the club attracted attention nationally when they asked local
white witch Titania Hardie, to help improve their home form. The witch blamed the Decor of the changing rooms,
and once the club changed them the team won eight of their nine remaining home games. Amongst their former
players are Tony Book a successful Manchester City captain of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, Ronnie Briggs (have
to be careful not to omit the r in the surname) who played in goal for both Manchester United and Northern Ireland,
Paul Randall who scored over 100 football league goals, Brian Drysdale who made over 500 football league
appearances during the course of his career and Lindsay Parsons who made over 400 football league appearances
without scoring a goal. The club’s record scorer with 292 goals is Mark Salter who also played in the football league
for Southend.
