April 2018

Dear Friends,

Easter falls this year on April 1. Easter and April Fool’s Day share the

same day on the calendar. I remember reading of the tradition among

Eastern Orthodox Christians: the priest begins the Easter celebration by

telling a joke. The meaning of this act is to remind followers gathered of

the “joke” that God played on the world on Resurrection day. The

authorities thought that they had rid the world of Jesus’ message as they

saw him there, dead on the cross. They thought they could get on with

life as they knew it, as they controlled it, in the Temple and beyond.

God had other plans…

Mary goes to the tomb of her beloved Jesus early in the morning and,

overcome with sadness is soon weeping at the place where she had seen

his body laid to rest. The body is gone and she believes tomb thieves

have stolen it. In her grief, she misses that Jesus is alive and standing

right beside her. No joke here as many can attest to: grief can keep us

from seeing that which is right in front of us. “Mary,” he speaks her

name, and suddenly she understands who it is that is standing before her.

Jesus is alive! She runs to tell the disciples all that she has experienced.

What Mary had to share was no joke for sure. On Easter Sunday we’ll

celebrate again, the Risen Lord Jesus’ triumph over the evil forces that

thought they’d brought him to death. The joke’s on you Evil, for with

God, love beats you every single day. Victory is ours in Jesus Christ.

HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH!

God bless,

NEWS FROM THE PEWS

Update from Pastor Laura: Thank you again for

your kindness and concern as I continue through

my cancer treatment. Your cards, messages, texts,

phone calls and gifts keep me hopeful and positive.

I feel and cherish your love! Thanks to Bill, Larry,

Norm, Joyce and Melissa for your extra care and

attention to life at Asbury during this time. I have

two more chemotherapy treatments left to go on

March 26th

and April 9th

! I’ll then have 3-4 weeks

of a break for recovery from the chemotherapy and

then on to 5 weeks (5 days a week) of radiation.

With each treatment, I’ll take a chemo pill that will

enhance the effectiveness of the radiation. My docs

and others have advised me that side effects will

pale in comparison to what I’ve experienced with

the chemotherapy – yippee!

Are you 50? Have you had your colonoscopy?

It’s a lifesaver!

To my Friends at Asbury,

I finally did it, but it was hard. Not sure I

would do a second one. All the thoughts, cards

and prayers helped a lot when I had knee

surgery on January 22nd

.

I’m feeling much better and walking pretty

good. Thank you all for helping me get through

it.

Love,

Barbara Hentz

Wylla Jane Apraku-Boateng was baptized on March 11, 2018 at Asbury. She is the daughter of Benjamin Apraku-Boateng and Heather Boucher, and little sister to Lennox. They make their home in Manchester, Connecticut.

Long time Asbury member Marian Conrad, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2018. Funeral services were private.
