and ESPN.com. One story that caught my attention is that of Abbey D’Agostino and Nikki Hamblin, run-ners for the United States and New Zealand teams respectively. For those who might not be familiar with what happened, here are some details, culled from aleteia.org:

After colliding into a fellow runner during a 5,000-meter qualifying heat on Tuesday, United States runner Ab-bey D’Agostino could have kept on running. Her coach even told her be-fore the race, “If you go down…get up, dust [yourself] off, have a quick look around and then get right back to running.” Instead she turned around and helped New Zealander Nikki Hamblin stand up and encouraged her to finish the race, saying, “Get up. We have to finish this.” Hamblin and D’Agostino continued to race together side-by-side, as it turned out D’Agostino was more severely in-jured than Hamblin and was struggling to finish the race. Hamblin wanted to return the favor and offered encour-agement to the grimacing D’Agostino. Despite running in absolute pain, D’Agostino finished the race behind Hamblin and was taken away in a wheelchair. Both runners were ad-vanced to the final, but after an MRI on Wednesday, D’Agostino discovered she had completely torn her ACL and will not be able to run for quite some time. The awe-inspiring event is being de-scribed as the definition of “true Olympic spirit” and a wonderful ex-ample of “sportsmanship,” but really it is better described as an expression of D’Agostino’s deep and abiding Chris-tian faith. She said in a statement to the media, “Although my actions were instinctual

at that moment, the only way I can and have rationalized it is that God prepared my heart to respond that way… This whole time here he’s made clear to me that my experience in Rio was going to be about more than my race performance — and as soon as Nikki got up I knew that was it.”

Despite the fact that Abbey D’Agostino is quite clear-ly a person worthy of our admiration and emulation, some of those who commented on the story took her to task for not getting right back up and running as fast as she could, with a view to placing at the head of the pack. After all, the thinking goes, winning is the only thing that matters. Really? While the vast majority of commentators saw this epi-sode for what it is, it’s still disconcerting that someone – more than one “someone,” in fact – would suggest that basic human decency should take a back seat to winning at all costs. Yet the “win or it's not worth the effort." mentality seems to be more and more the norm, rather than the exception. (I’m sorry to say that I saw it manifested by a visiting coach in more than one OCPSL game last year.) Why are we sur-prised, then, at the steroid scandal in baseball, or the NFL’s “Deflategate” saga a few years ago, or any of the myriad cheating episodes that we hear about? If we drill into our children the idea that winning is eve-rything, then we have no right to be shocked or disap-pointed when they cash in whatever moral sense they have for the sake of the prize. I’m going to devote more space to this topic over the coming weeks, because it’s emblematic of much that’s wrong in our society (whether it’s a cause or merely a symptom, I don’t quite know). In the meantime, we can be grateful to God for giving us people like Ab-bey D’Agostino and Nikki Hamblin; their parents, their teammates, and their countries have every reason to be most proud of them. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann

BIBLE BASICS 29: THE LETTERS OF SAINT PAUL, PART II

Fr. Peter Heasley

Last week, we looked at the overall structure of a Greco-Roman letter and we began to see how Paul uses that form to assist his proclamation of the Gospel. Paul evangelizes, like the other apostles, in person, visiting many cities on his three missionary journeys. The letters assist in that proclamation by giving Paul the chance to respond to particular situations. As he does so, he makes universal statements of Christian theology.

A clear example of Paul’s theological use of the letter format comes to us in perhaps his very first letter, I Thessalonians. Dating to around 50-51 AD, or even earlier, it is likely the earliest Christian document we have. In

it, Paul seeks to assure the people of Thessalonica, whom he had visited in his second missionary journey, that those who have already died in Christ are by no means removed from the glory of the expected second coming of Christ.

Paul begins with an Address in I Thess 1:1, in which he includes Silvanus and Timothy as co-senders. It could be that these two had a hand in the composition of the letter as well. From there, the Body

of the letter begins in the Exordium, with a Thanksgiving (“We give thanks to God always for you all…”) (1:2-10). Here, Paul mentions specifically the joys and trials the Thessalonians have known, guided by the Holy Spirit. Then, Paul recounts in the Narratio his missionary work among them and the troubles that Timothy has noticed in Paul’s absence (2:1–3:13).

Paul now sets out to resolve these issues, specifically two of them. There are two Confirmatio (arguments), each with its own Propositio (thesis statement). In the first, Paul tells them that their moral conduct should imitate that of himself and the other missionaries (4:1). There follows a list of good moral behaviors – chaste marriage, quiet living, and self-sustenance (4:2-12). Paul often makes such lists in his letters, both of good moral behaviors and patterns of evil conduct.

Then, Paul addresses the question of the resurrection of the dead for everyone. It seems that Timothy has brought this concern of theirs to Paul, who now addresses it in a second Propositio (4:13-14) and Confirmatio (4:15–5:11). Those who have already died (whom he calls “asleep”) will rise again when the Lord Jesus appears in his Parousia, followed by those who remain on earth. The early Christians expected our Lord’s imminent return. To this, Paul responds that while that day “will come like a thief in the night” (5:2), the good moral conduct of Jesus’ followers will find them on guard for his return.

Paul builds onto these two points an exhortation to good conduct. This is the Peroratio (5:12-24), which reflects some of the points that he has made in the two Confirmatio of the letter. Paul then fills his Conclusion with Greetings and a Blessing (5:25-28). Interestingly here, Paul commands that his letter be read publically, a practice that has continued in the Church every Sunday for nearly two thousand years.

Paul’s other letters follow this basic format, some greatly more complicated (like I and II Corinthians) and others shaped into more of a treatise style (Romans and Ephesians). These letters, like those of Peter, James, John, and Jude, support the public preaching of the apostles. These letters now support the faith that we have received from God through our family, friends, neighbors, and perhaps still, the missionaries we have known.
