THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 24, 2019

Moses met God in a most astounding way in the bush that was burning but not consumed by fire. Moses clearly had a powerful encounter with the Lord. He even felt bold enough to ask God’s name, something unheard of among his people at the time—God’s name was unspeakable. Moses stood on holy ground. Do we not also stand on holy ground? As people who are created in God’s image and drawn to Christ through the waters of Baptism, we have been filled with God’s grace and goodness. The ground of our lives is holy. Lent is a time when we are called to open our minds and hearts to Christ, rely on God’s patient mercy, and to grow as God’s holy people.

CULTIVATING HOLY GROUND There are three traditional Lenten practices that help us to cultivate the ground of our lives in order to grow in holiness and bear good fruit: prayer, which deepens our relationship with God and strengthens our desire to live as followers of Jesus; fasting, through which we heighten our hunger for God and become more attentive to the hunger and needs of others; almsgiving: sacrificing time, money, or resources in order to share God’s merciful love with the poor and vulnerable. As we continue to journey through Lent, cultivate the holy ground of your life through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, so that you may live fruitfully and well.

Third Sunday of Lent Page Three At the “Right to Life” March, we are privileged to hear speakers who were former employees of Planned Parenthood who have turned into ardent supporters of Life from Conception to Natural Death.

“Unplanned: What She Saw Changed Everything” is a recent movie about Abby Johnson who is one of these people. It is her true story! The actress who plays the role found out when she told her Mother that she was going to take the role, at great risk to her career in Hollywood, that her Mother was at that very same clinic contemplating her daughter’s abortion years prior! Obviously, she decided to bring her daughter to birth! It is a powerful movie!

It will play at the AMC Theater in the Palisades Center in west Nyack as listed below: Thursday, March 28, 2019, 7:30 PM & 9:30PM.

Friday, March 29, 2019; Saturday, March 30, 2019: Sunday, March 31, 2019; Monday, April 1, 2019; Tuesday, April 2, 2019: and Wednesday, April 3, 2019. These days will have 5 shows from 11:30 AM to 10:30PM.

I encourage many to see this show! And, we need to help those organizations like Good Counsel Homes, Birthright, and Rockland County Right to Life who care for Expectant Mothers and their children. And, I recommend the Sisters of Life and their “Entering Canaan” reconciliation days! They are powerful experiences of God’s Mercy and Love!

With Thanks and Prayer, Fr. Jerry

We will not be able to add any names received after April 3rd as the list will be sent to the printer. To insure the correct spelling, PLEASE PRINT NAMES ON THE ENVELOPE ~ Thank you!

Page Five LENTEN SEASON

We begin the season of Lent. Canon Law urges all the Christian Faithful to offer special prayers, to perform works of piety and charity, and to mortify themselves by fulfilling their responsibilities more faithfully. They are likewise encouraged to perform acts of fast and abstinence. FASTING requires that only one full meal a day be taken. Two smaller meals may be taken to maintain strength but these taken together should not equal another full meal. Fasting obliges from the 18th to the 59th birthday. ABSTINENCE prohibits individuals the eating of meat. Abstinence obliges from the 14th birthday on. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. DAYS OF ABSTINENCE/ FASTING ARE: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence.

DAILY MASS There is an additional 12 Noon Mass in the Parish Church during Lent: Monday thru Friday.

HOLY HOUR - EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT/BENEDICTION On Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm in the Shrine Church, we will continue to have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Silent Adoration and Reflection, followed by Benediction. Why not take advantage of this quiet time with the Blessed Sacrament during this Lenten season?

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Why not include the celebration of the Stations of the Cross in your Lenten spiritual program? This devotional practice invites us as Christians to walk with Christ on the road to Calvary. Please join us each Friday evening during Lent, at 7:00pm, starting March 8th in the Shrine Church.
