It’s been quite a journey this Lent, coming off the heels of General Conference 2019. Several of you have asked what you can do as a response. Currently, there are two actions that I invite you to consider. First, there is a resolution circulating around our Great Plains Annual Conference titled: “GPAC Disavowal of the Traditional Plan.” This resolution will be considered for a vote at our Great Plains Annual Conference that meets at the end of May this year. The resolution was originally drafted by Rev. John Collins. By adding your name, you are sending a message that you support this legislation and are co-submitting the legislation to be voted upon in May. Currently, there are 1.6K co-submitters. The Annual Conference body is the body that can take official action on the legislation. If you choose to sign your name, you must be an official member or clergy person of a United Methodist Church in GPAC (your membership at CHUM qualifies you!) and list the church where your membership is held. You can find the entire resolution at this link: https:// docs.google.com/forms/d/ e/1FAIpQLSeeqwwiudIsoLmgo5w6mQAsgfgZorqqJ2swfaUcdJ-OwO-BDQ/viewform An excerpt of the resolution follows: THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Great Plains Annual Conference (GPAC) condemns the decision of the 2019 General Conference to pass the Traditional Plan and apologizes for the harm that it has caused LGBTQ+ persons, their families, their friends, and the body of Christ. “We affirm that all persons are individuals of sacred worth, created in the image of God,” but we also assert and affirm that no human being is incompatible with Christian teaching. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, no GPAC funds or monies (either directly through payments or indirectly through the time of employees of the conference) shall be expended for the purpose of background investigations, complaints, just resolutions, or clergy trials pertaining LGBTQ+ ordination and marriage. The second action you could consider is to contact our Bishop and the Commission on General Conference to ask them to name an independent team to investigate improper voting at General Conference 2019. This call to action comes from the Uniting Methodists (https://unitingmethodists.com/). Some points from Uniting Methodists that you could include in a letter: We are mindful that the Commission on General Conference has authorized a task force of its members ‘to address matters related to credentialing, voting, and other systemic issues of the 2019 special session.’ With all due respect for the Commission’s work, given the serious nature of accusations related to voting at the highly polarized St. Louis session, the circumstances require an independent investigation. We urge the Commission on General Conference in consultation with the Council of Bishops to name and authorize an independent team of persons with appropriate investigatory, legal, and related professional expertise. The independent team should issue their report to the Commission on General Conference and the Council of Bishops no later than November 2019 along with any recommended changes in rules and processes." Wise in the Ways of the Spirit, Bold in the Ways of Justice,

and Graceful in relationships with all Creation.

You can find the entire resolution at this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeeqwwiudIsoLmgo5w6mQAsgfgZorqqJ2swfaUcdJ-OwO-BDQ/viewform

An excerpt of the resolution follows: THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Great Plains Annual Conference (GPAC) condemns the decision of the 2019 General Conference to pass the Traditional Plan and apologizes for the harm that it has caused LGBTQ+ persons, their families, their friends, and the body of Christ.

Some points from Uniting Methodists that you could include in a letter:

We are mindful that the Commission on General Conference has authorized a task force of its members ‘to address matters related to credentialing, voting, and other systemic issues of the 2019 special session.’ With all due respect for the Commission’s work, given the serious nature of accusations related to voting at the highly polarized St. Louis session, the circumstances require an independent investigation.

We urge the Commission on General Conference in consultation with the Council of Bishops to name and authorize an independent team of persons with appropriate investigatory, legal, and related professional expertise.

The independent team should issue their report to the Commission on General Conference and the Council of Bishops no later than November 2019 along with any recommended changes in rules and processes."

This series invites you to joyfully practice five spiritual disciplines for five weeks.
