MCLEAN EMAIL: [email protected] WIKI PAGE: http://uhillenglish.wikispaces.com/ (scroll down to Mr. McLean’s Domain) UNIT SYNOPSIS This unit on John Wyndam’s The Chrysalids will see us consider how dystopian literature offers contemporary readers insightful perspective into our own society. Throughout this unit we will seek to critically evaluate our society, to be conscious of the forces that manipulate us, and become aware of our own personal biases in the pursuit of truth. We will explore the consequences of racism, prejudice, and ignorance by recognizing those groups and individuals living in “the fringes” of our own society and how we in turn contribute to this system. We will be tasked with addressing these problems through the creation of a utopia, providing us with a responsibility to work through these issues as a class to understand the depth and complexity of these matters. This unit will encourage analytical thinking and creative responses in hopes of making us conscious and constructive members of society.
