TODAY’S WEATHER—SHOWERS AND SOME OCCASIONAL rain will fall along the North Pacific coast today and spread into parts of the Northern Plateau. Showers are also due in sections of the Upper Plains and lower Florida. Otherwise, fair to partly cloudy skies should prevail elsewhere. Cooler weather is in store for the Northern Plains, while a slow warming trend occurs in most areas east of the Mississippi. (Mobile Press Register UPI Telephoto) Photography By BART KINCH Vnited Press International Action photography and the *5mm format go hand-in-hand. The many attributes of the 35mm camera continue to keep it tops in popularity among the action photographers. These attributes include ease and speed of handling, large film capacity, portability, wide selec- tion of both color and black-and- white films and inchangeability of lenses. Despite the fact that many am-! ateur photographers do not have' the opportunity to photograph any ] leading sports shows such as the ■World Series, Kentucky Derby or Olympic track and ’field events, sports action still remains the number one subject of non-profes- sional action fans. * Local high schools and colleges, baseball parks, swimming pools, playgrounds all offer a year-round schedule of competitive events. Several Aids There are several aids to pho- tographing fast action that might bear mentioning here. In every sport there are mo- ments of action that will provide good material for pictures; a halfback breaking around end; basketball players leaping high into the air for a rebound; sprint- ers straining as they near the finish tape. Action like this is easiest to po- sition for and anticipate. Your camera can be prefocused on the point of expected action and the shutter tripped as the action reaches its peak within the zone. While your area of action is more or less fixed, your camera position need not be. Extremely low camera shots can result in spectacular photographs. On the other hand, high angle shots made rom a position in the stand often help clarify a situation by showing the entire scene. Often Overlooked nciures inaue ueiuie in cuwn moments of peak action also can be very effective and often are overlooked. A close shot of two opposing football lines facing each other; a pitcher’s intent gaze as he looks for a signal from the catcher; a tangled heap of bas- ketball players on the floor after a spill. Don’t overlook sideline events: coaches nervously disc u s s i n g strategy; wans yeiiing; cheerlead- ers performing their routines. While it is possible to get good shots using only the 35mm’s standard lens, telephoto and wide angie lenses will prove valua- ble. Telephoto lenses are particular- ly useiul when shooting football and baseball —> sports where a large part of the action will be out of range of shorter focal length lenses. Wide-Angle Lens On the other hand, eye-catch- ing pictures can result from imaginative employment of a wiae-angie lens, such as in show- ing the vast sweep of a roaring crowd or purposely distorting the he.ght oi basketoall action. Many sporting events are held indoors and at night. Available light can be used in many of these situations, particularly when you are shooting sideline candids ana don’t want to attract atten- tion. Available light shooting usually means giving up mouon-freezing fast shutter speeds. This will add blur to the shots in varying de- grees and often enhances the feeling o* movement. Flash will be necessary for ac- tion-stopping pictures under ad- verse lighting conditions. Be sure you have permission to use flash at indoor sporting events. When Columbus landed on the island of Puerto Rico on his sec- ond voyage to the New World in 1493, he named it San Juan Bautista. Pone eDe Leon, gave the territory its present name. The polygraph, popularly de- scribed as a “lie-detector”, was developed by Leonarde Keeler of the Science Crime Detection La- oratory at Northwestern Univer- sity. The first successful use of polygraph evidence in court was made in 1935. Legal Notices No. 3560 NON-RESIDENT NOTICE No. 17.406 THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI: TO: Unknown Heirs-at-Law.

Photography By BART KINCH

Vnited Press International Action photography and the

*5mm format go hand-in-hand.

The many attributes of the

35mm camera continue to keep it tops in popularity among the

action photographers. These attributes include ease

and speed of handling, large film

capacity, portability, wide selec-

tion of both color and black-and-

white films and inchangeability of

lenses.

Despite the fact that many am-! ateur photographers do not have'

the opportunity to photograph any ] leading sports shows such as the

■World Series, Kentucky Derby or

Olympic track and ’field events, sports action still remains the

number one subject of non-profes- sional action fans. *

Local high schools and colleges, baseball parks, swimming pools, playgrounds all offer a year-round schedule of competitive events.

Several Aids

There are several aids to pho- tographing fast action that might bear mentioning here.

In every sport there are mo-

ments of action that will provide good material for pictures; a

halfback breaking around end; basketball players leaping high into the air for a rebound; sprint- ers straining as they near the

finish tape. Action like this is easiest to po-

sition for and anticipate. Your camera can be prefocused on the

point of expected action and the shutter tripped as the action reaches its peak within the zone.

While your area of action is more or less fixed, your camera

position need not be. Extremely low camera shots can result in

spectacular photographs. On the other hand, high angle shots made rom a position in the stand often help clarify a situation by showing the entire scene.

Often Overlooked nciures inaue ueiuie in cuwn

moments of peak action also can

be very effective and often are

overlooked. A close shot of two

opposing football lines facing each other; a pitcher’s intent gaze as

he looks for a signal from the

catcher; a tangled heap of bas- ketball players on the floor after a spill.

Don’t overlook sideline events: coaches nervously disc u s s i n g strategy; wans yeiiing; cheerlead- ers performing their routines.

While it is possible to get good shots using only the 35mm’s standard lens, telephoto and wide

angie lenses will prove valua- ble.

Telephoto lenses are particular- ly useiul when shooting football and baseball —> sports where a

large part of the action will be out of range of shorter focal length lenses.

Wide-Angle Lens On the other hand, eye-catch-

ing pictures can result from

imaginative employment of a

wiae-angie lens, such as in show-

ing the vast sweep of a roaring crowd or purposely distorting the he.ght oi basketoall action.

Many sporting events are held indoors and at night. Available light can be used in many of these situations, particularly when

you are shooting sideline candids ana don’t want to attract atten- tion.

Available light shooting usually means giving up mouon-freezing fast shutter speeds. This will add blur to the shots in varying de- grees and often enhances the feeling o* movement.

Flash will be necessary for ac-

tion-stopping pictures under ad- verse lighting conditions. Be sure

you have permission to use flash at indoor sporting events.

When Columbus landed on the island of Puerto Rico on his sec-

ond voyage to the New World in 1493, he named it San Juan Bautista. Pone eDe Leon, gave the territory its present name.

The polygraph, popularly de- scribed as a “lie-detector”, was

developed by Leonarde Keeler of the Science Crime Detection La- oratory at Northwestern Univer- sity. The first successful use of polygraph evidence in court was made in 1935.
