President’s Message

We are now in the depths of winter and on these frigid days I will admit that I long for the warm weather! Yet, the winter gives us a chance to slow down a bit, regroup and develop new plans for the future. There has been a lot of planning going on at GBC and I am excited to tell you about what is coming up in the near future!

As you probably know, the NTI is coming to Boston this year! I cannot stress enough that if you have the chance to join your colleagues at this preeminent educational event, please take the time to go. I am not sure that I can adequately describe the reinvigoration that you will feel after attending. I always come away with a reminder of why I am a Critical/Acute Care Nurse and knowing again that I am in a profession that I love. The dates for this year are May 18th – May 23rd. The 18th and 19th have 26 preconference education sessions that encompass review courses for the CCRN, PCCN, and CCNS exams, cardiac, respiratory, and renal topics. The conference starts Monday morning, May 20th and runs through Thursday, May 23rd. For all NTI information, go to the AACN website and click on NTI 2013.

The Greater Boston Chapter of AACN is one of the host chapters for the NTI along with the Southcoast and Merrimack chapters. As a host chapter, there are duties that we cover for AACN during the NTI. Our duty is to cover the Ribbon Station in the registration area. We have the obligation of covering two days of the NTI from about 7:00 AM to 5 PM. We will be developing a schedule over the next few weeks for volunteers to sign up for 2 hour blocks of time to man the station. We need 2 members for each block of time. If any of our members are interested, please contact us at [email protected]. I will post more information on our website [www.aacn.org/gbc] when I receive it.

In addition to the NTI, GBC is sponsoring 3 other educational events in the near future. On March 6th, we will be presenting a program on Sepsis at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, MA. The speaker will be Carol Daddio-Pierce, RN, MSN, clinical educator at BWH. This is a free program open to all nurses. A light dinner will be served. On April 11th, the annual research program “Emerging Trends Impacting Acute/Critical Care Nursing” will be held at Regis College in Weston, MA from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Refreshments will be served. The GBC will be holding a Board meeting immediately after this event and all are welcome to attend. Our Celebration of Nursing dinner is in the planning stages and we will send out information about this as soon as we have it confirmed. Registration information for all GBC sponsored events will be on the website. I hope you can take advantage of these programs.

For now, stay warm and make plans to join your colleagues at the NTI. I encourage everyone to “dare to” step outside their zone of comfort and engage in something new!

Respectfully submitted,

This is a great opportunity for us, NTI is in our backyard. Let’s take advantage of this educational event. Make a strong case for attending NTI 2013 in Boston by explaining the return your organization gets from investing in your NTI experience. One of the best ways to convey the value is to connect your organization's goals to the educational opportunities offered at NTI. Start working now with your manager, educator or administrator by customizing the templates below to help secure financial support this year.

Articulate the Value of Attending NTIFocus on what you will specifically bring back to your unit or hospital in return for the opportunity to attend. This should include identifying educational sessions tied to your unit's or hospital's strategic initiatives, as well as sessions related to your continuing professional development. You can easily find information on educational sessions that correspond with your hospital’s strategic initiatives by visiting the www.aacn.org/NTI

Inspiration, rejuvenation, networking and fun

I heard great things about NTI, for the few years I never had a chance to attend due to some other priorities, but this year will be different. NTI is coming to Boston, there’s no way that I will miss this one. Check the brochure and choose the one that is closest to your practice or choose something that is totally new. As our current AACN president say- DARE to try something different.

Here are my picks:

Pre conferences- look at the variety of topics, a great choice for someone who can only get a weekend off. (Sat and Sunday)

Mastering How to Influence Change- Two-day leadership course provides strategies and skills to help create profound and sustainable positive changes and influence with or without formal authority.

Mechanical Ventilation: Physiology-Based Care- provides concepts of normal respiratory physiology and pathophysiologic alterations, basic mechanical ventilation and the impact of mechanical ventilation on the normal cardiopulmonary relationship.

Patient Safety Summit- Wednesday, May 22 • 8:30A-4PGain in-depth and focused knowledge to take back to your unit that can contribute to improvement in patient outcomes and the bottom line. If patient safety is a learning priority for you and your organization and you can’t carve out a week, consider registering for the day.The Patient Safety Summit, a one-day event, will feature nationally renowned industry experts speaking on one of the most significant challenges in today’s healthcare

environment. This “conference within a conference” gives registrants the opportunity to learn from top-tier patient safety authorities who will share the latest evidence-based information and resources.

Patient Safety Summit topics include: Alarm fatigue Standardization implementation Drug shortages Infusion systems and their role in medication administration errors Information technology

Regular Sessions:

Dare to Speak Out When It’s Not a Matter of Life or Death: Addressing Day-to-Day Ethical concerns in high-acuity patient settings, ethical dilemmas are common but without ethics education and structural support to assist in dealing with these issues, suffering and frustration occur. Some nurses may think of ethical challenges in terms of individual patients, such as end-of-life concerns, and may not recognize broader, organizational ethic concerns.

Managing Vasoactive and Positive Inotropic Infusions

Acute and critical care nurses face considerable challenges when caring for hemodynamically unstable patients, particularly when they require multiple intravenous vasoactive and inotropic infusions. This presentation provides an in-depth review of the actions, indications, dose ranges, and side effects of commonly used hemodynamic medications including catecholamine, phosphodiasterase inhibitor, and vasodilator agents. A case study approach is used to illustrate how these pharmacologic agents are selected based on evidence-based guidelines for patients experiencing different types of shock states and how they can be effectively titrated to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes for patients. Evidence-Based Practice: Improving practice by killing Sacred Cows-Practice habits, or “sacred cows” continue in clinical practice despite the availability of research and other forms of evidence that should be used to clearly guide critical care practice interventions. This session will provide a brief, concise, statement of the clinical problem, critically review the current research and other forms of evidence, and identify how that research and best practice evidence should be used to improve patient outcomes. The session will challenge the participants to critically examine their practice using knowledge based on current best practice evidence presented in this session.

Here’s a great news!!!!Did you know that as a chapter member of the Greater Boston Chapter, you are eligible for a $75.00 rebate on your tuition?

A special note from Marcia Bixby- Past president of GBC

I personally would like to express my sincere gratitude for the GBC for it's donation to an event that I coordinated, with the Parrothead Club of Eastern MA,that benefitted the Huntington House at the JP Boston VAMC. The Huntington House provides housing forveterans undergoing outpatient therapies like chemo, rehab and other medical treatments that do not require inpatient admissions. With the donation from GBC, raffle and donation money from the CCRN/PCCN program and money raised from a road rally - the total donation was over $900.00. This money will go a long way toward purchasing lock boxes for each room to protect the veteran’s valuables.

All GBC members are invited to attend our monthly board meetings, which start at 6:00 pm and usually last about 90 minutes. We rotate hospitals each month. February 12th conference call to be set up by P. LyonsMarch date TBA coinciding with Spring Celebration programApril 11th coinciding with Regis/GBC Research programMay 14th @ BIDMC

If interested in attending, please contact a board member for specific room information.
