Seven years ago I turned the last paper of my

academic career. I finished my Masters of Divinity

degree well prepared to be a pastor in the Christian

Church (Disciples of Christ). I believed I was finally

finished with academic work and ready to pastor my

congregation. Life has a funny way of proving a

person wrong. I was once again in a classroom at

Phillips Seminary in Tulsa on Tuesday beginning my

new journey as I started my Doctor of Ministry degree.

A few people asked me to share some information

about this program. The Doctor of Ministry (DMin) is

a professional doctorate focusing on developing skills

in application oriented research for a ministry setting.

Per the Association of Theological Schools, “the

degree's purpose is to enhance the practice of ministry

for persons who hold the Masters of Divinity (MDiv)

or its educational equivalent and who have engaged

in substantial ministerial leadership.”

I will be in Tulsa twice a year, for two weeks in

June and in January. My specialization is Homiletics

(Preaching) and my goal for this program is to become a

more effective pastor, preacher, and leader as I am

introduced to new and different ways of defining,

stretching, and challenging myself in those roles.

I am grateful for this opportunity and the support

of the church as I seek to enhance my education and

leadership skills as your pastor. I look forward to

sharing what I learn and applying it to the ministry of

First Christian Church and the Thomas community.

Blessings,

Jason

Homiletics:

that branch of theology concerned with preaching

and sermons and the proper way in which

to deliver them.

Theological Term

of the Week

National Vanilla Milkshake Day is

happily enjoyed by many people on

June 20th of each year. The first time

the term “milkshake” was used in print

was in 1885. This milkshake was a

concoction of cream, eggs, and whiskey

which was often served with other

alcoholic tonics such as lemonades and

soda waters. A few years later in the

early 1900s, people began asking for

this new treat with a scoop of ice

cream. It was then by the 1930s that

milkshakes were a popular drink in

malt shops everywhere.

Wacky Wednesday is this evening at

5:30 p.m. This week’s session is titled

Jesus Walks with Zacchaeus (Jesus sees

us and will always be our friend). Our

quest tonight is to “Find Joy

On The River.” Romper, our

new otter friend, will join us

again during opening exercises.

Last week we had 29 kids

attend Wacky Wednesday -

16 of them joined us for the first time

this summer.

Our monthly Adult Sunday School

Class will meet this Sunday, June 24 in

the library at 10 a.m. They will discuss

the rock foundation that Jesus continues to

provide us in comparison to Yertle the

Turtle by Dr. Seuss.

We have 2 campers at Junior Camp

in Guthrie this week. I have no doubt

that McCartney Lisle and JJ Fite are

having a wonderful time and making some

good friends. Olivia Williams and Lillie

Hightower will be off to Discovery

Camp in Guthrie on Friday. They will

return Sunday afternoon full of great

stories of their adventures.

Just a reminder that Jason will be out

of the office this week and next week

to attend classes at Phillips Seminary,

but he will be here to lead Worship

both Sundays.

The new refrigerator was delivered

and installed yesterday. Stop by the

FCC kitchen when you have a chance

to check it out.

That’s all for now,

Jennifer

ON GIVING AND GETTING

British author Elizabeth Bibesco said, “Blessed are

those who can give without remembering and take

without forgetting.”

Can we follow her advice? Do we really need to

keep a mental account of our sharing? Of course, we

must keep financial records for tax purposes, but why

dwell on our generosity? That might cultivate the sin

of arrogant pride.

Instead, keep the good feeling derived from giving.

Dwell on that joy rather

than on the amount or

the service given. Never

forget what others have

done for you. A grateful

heart blesses you as well

as the people you help.

A new refrigerator was

delivered and installed

yesterday. After over 20

years of service the

commercial refrigerator

we had in the kitchen

stopped working. The

Board chose to buy this

residential style unit to

replace it. FCC would like

to thank those that have

contributed so far to the

purchase of our new

refrigerator.
