This Week’s Sermon

I hear it in the prayers of our elders. Take this table out into the world. I hear it in the conversations of church members. I am so proud of our church. The language is multiplied in the emails I receive. The church cannot exist unless it is out in the community doing good works. It is being discussed at elder meetings. What did we learn from VBS and how can we do it again?

By every measurement, the first half of 2012 was outstanding. Accomplishments for 2012 First half: Stability. Success in short term goals. Increased visibility and community engagement. In the second half of 2012, a church‐wide strategic planning process will take place that will allow us to capitalize and expand the short‐term success and community connections we’ve begun. The Next Steps capital project will continue to move forward. The goal is to have known numbers by August so we can complete our pledge drive and move that project forward! I’m hearing conversation about offering children events in August when no one else is doing so and perhaps opening our gym a few nights a month to the youth who need a place to go. Just beginning a conversation about offering Sunday School and nursery to special needs children that were introduced to us during VBS, and continuing to sharpen our themes, focus and spiritual content for our worship services for the fall. In a few weeks the staff will gather in retreat to work on the immediate, help lead congregational leadership in the intermediary, and finalize the pieces with Exec Com and Elders to create the more long term and far reaching, strategic planning event. All of this, is on our summer agenda, plus making ready those regular programs and ministries that will launch again when school resumes. The second half of 2012 holds all of this, plus more of the same things that made the first half successful. We will continue to expand our missional church impact. We will expand what we know: Acts of understanding and mercy are what draw people to the Church. Hands and feet. We are the hands and feet. People are attracted to and want to be a part of, something that goes out into the world and makes and difference…and calls itself…church! We may just have turned the calendar to July and realized its halftime. But halftime is a long way from the finishing point. 2012 has a lot more in store for FCC. Let's Go!

Recently during my time of devotion I came upon the following.

Take time to work – it is the price of success Take time to think – it is the source of power

Take time to play – it is the secret of perpetual youth Take time to read – it is the fountain of wisdom

Take time to be friendly – it is the road to happiness Take time to dream – it is hitching your wagon to a star Take time to love and be loved – it is the privilege of God

Take time to look around – it is too short a day to be selfish Take time to laugh – it is the music of the soul

Most of us would agree that there is a time for all those things. There’s time to work, a time to play, a time to think, a time to dream, and a time to laugh and a time to do all the rest. What if we added two more lines ‐ take time to listen and take time to grow? So often we spend a lot of time talking and not listening. We are often in a hurry to go from one task to another that we fail to stop and listen to the cry of another, to the idea that someone else might have, to words of encouragement that is being offered. Sometimes we don’t even take the time to sit and be still to listen to God when He calls. We must also take the time to grow. We can no longer afford to relish in the good old days and do the things that we did way back then because they worked or because we have done it that way for 20 years. Times have changed. Needs have changed. People have changed. NOW is the time for all of us, to take the time to grow not just in a personal way, but to grow spiritually, to strengthen our relationship with Jesus Christ, to get off of our pews and be the hands and feet of Christ. Recently we have experienced that. Let’s not stop because that event is over but build upon it. Because, God is calling us to FCC to grow in many ways. I am excited about all the new possibilities that are going to be taking place. And those possibilities are endless. Come and grow with us as together we work, play, dream, take notice of the needs around us, laugh and love and be loved. Take time! In loving partnership,

Rock the Desert 2012

This summer, First Christian Church will once again be

hosting groups from across our Area and Region for Rock the Desert, the Christian Rock

Festival that takes place the first weekend of August. Plans are underway to strengthen our

hospitality. If you did not get a chance to pledge this important ministry through In His Steps, you may contact Cory Glover to

volunteer to help.

Capital Campaign Advances!

Monday night the Next Steps committee accepted the plans and instructed our architect to proceed with the bid process. Tentative

timeline is for the plans to be released for bid around July 15. Expectation is approximately one month later the bids will be

returned, opened, and at that time the church can respond. The bids will be good for a 30‐45 day period.

What does this mean? August 15‐September 15 will be a busy and exciting time, matching the bids to our monies available and moving forward! All will require a series of committee meetings,

followed by board meeting, and ultimately a congregational meeting of action. We will know most of the variables after August 15 and

can respond accordingly.

Please continue to pray for our leadership and our church. Gifts

to the campaign continue to come in and your extended participation is encouraged!

“What Camp Meant to Me”

The weekend of June 22, 7 adults and 10 children ages 4 up through completed 3rd grade, attended the Central Area Grand Beginnings Camp at Lake Brownwood Christian Retreat. This past Sunday

during the Stewardship Moment, 8 year old Carlos Garcia shared his testimony of what that weekend meant to him. Below is what he

shared with his church family

“Last weekend my mom, Jaime my younger brother

and I went to Grand Beginnings Camp at Lake Brownwood

My favorite part was swimming in the lake. I rode in a

kayak all by myself. This was the first time I have ever been in one. We

also sang songs and went on a scavenger hunt. It was a lot of

fun. It felt good to be there with my mom and brother. I really liked being out in the wide open space. I thank God that I am a part of a church family that loves me and help me to do things and to learn more about God. I can’t wait to go back again next year. Thank you

for giving my family and me a good time at Lake Brownwood!”

Focus Food for Memorial Food

The focus food group for the summer until September will be any kind of protein; i.e. canned tuna, chicken, salmon, peanut butter, beans (canned or dried).

First Christian Church Library

Receiving Special Attention

Over the past several weeks, Mary Hurst has been at work in our

library. She has been cleaning the shelves, putting books in the

spaces where they belong, going through the records and getting

our library back on track. Sometime in the near future our library will be a place where one can come and study, read and or check out a book and perhaps

watch a video. Our library and the history behind it has been very significant to FCC. Mary along with others are wanting to see that our library remains a place

that can be effectively used. If you would like to be a part of this ministry please contact the

church office.
