Information on China

Chinese New Year is the Chinese version of Christmas in China, but many Chinese get in the holiday spirit

at Christmas in China. Christmas is not an official holiday in China, so most offices, schools and shops

remain open. All the trappings of a Western Christmas can be found in China, Hong Kong, Macau and

Taiwan.

In Hong Kong, the figure who visits children is known as Lan Khoong or Dun Che Lao Ren.

There are church services given in Chinese as well as English. Children send Christmas

cards depicting the Holy Family in a Chinese setting. Public areas are decorated with

Nativities, poinsettias, streamers, and paper chains.

The People’s Republic of China, commonly referred to as

“China,” is approximately equal to the United States in total

land area with 9.64 million square kilometers. A 2007

population estimate held that China is home to 1.327 billion

people, more than any other nation in the world. The

government of the People’s Republic is a single-party state

run by the Chinese Communist Party since 1949. Market-

oriented reforms beginning in the late 1970’s have ushered

in an era of economic development and, for many, vastly

improving living standards. China’s major cities include

Beijing (the capital), Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing,

Guangzhou, Shenyang, Qingdao, Wuhan and Chengdu.
