Afterseveralhoursharvesting frogbitthevolunteerg roupglidedtoshorewherethey sharedsnacksandobservation sofwildlife.Newspecieswer eaddedtothenaturelog. Frogbit,afreefloating plantwithheartshapedleaves,forms smallwhiteflowerswith threepetalsandayellowcenter.Theplantreproducesbydevelopingstolons,thickcordlikepiecesthatgrowoutf romthemainplant.Attachedto theendofstolonsareturion s, smallbudsthatdropinthe fall,settlingtothebottom ofthewetlandtoreemergein spring andproduceanotherseason’splants. Plantgrowthisrapid,anda plantthatstartsathalfan inchcangrowtoov er40inchesineight weeks.Frogbitreproducesq uicklybecauseasingle plantproducesupto100turions;eachturioncangrowanewplant. Largedensematsoffrogb itdecreaselightpenetrationin tothewetlands,pushoutnativ e species,changenitrogen,oxyg enandothernutrient levels,thusdecreasingnaturalwetland biodiversity.Inshallowareas,decomposingfrogbitdecreasesth edissolvedoxygencontent inthewater,disruptingnativeplantandanimallife. Asthefifthlargestlakein thecontinentalUni tedStatesitisimportantto monitorLake Champlain’shealth,removein vasivespecies,andworktoprot ectnativespecies.Thelakeis avaluablehabitatforplantsandanimalsaswellasarecreationaljewel. TownFarmBay,locatedatt hesouthwestcornerofCharlotte, isoneofthetown’smost significantenviron mentalassets.ThorpandKimb allBrooksflowintothe lakehereand formalarge,diversewetland, providinghabitattob irds,mammalsandreptiles.Thesame characteristicsthatdrawnativeplantsandanimalsherealsoprovideaprotectedareawith slowmovingwaterth atinvasivefrogbitplan tsfindfavorable. inchcangrowtoover40inchesineightweeks.Frogbitreproducesquicklybecauseasingle

plantproducesupto100turions;eachturioncangrowanewplant.

avaluablehabitatforplantsandanimalsaswellasarecreationaljewel.

TownFarmBay,locatedatthesouthwestcornerofCharlotte,isoneofthetown’smost

significantenvironmentalassets.ThorpandKimballBrooksflowintothelakehereand

formalarge,diversewetland,providinghabitattobirds,mammalsandreptiles.Thesame

characteristicsthatdrawnativeplantsandanimalsherealsoprovideaprotectedareawith

slow‐movingwaterthatinvasivefrogbitplantsfindfavorable.

Now,startingitsfourthyear,thefrogbitprojectaimstocontinueremovingtheinvasive

planttomaintainthehealthanddiversityofthebayandwetland.PointBayMarinahas

activelysupportedtheprojectandbeeninvolvedsincethebeginning.Theproject’sfirst

 

threeyearsincludedbothpaidstaffandvolunteers,fundedbyLewisCreekAssociation,

stateandfederalfunds,whileaprivatelandownerhasgenerouslyofferedshorelineaccess

tocontinuethisannualwork.Overthistimefrogbitlevelshavebeenreducedandcannow

bemaintainedbyanall‐volunteercrewduringtheJuneandJulyharvestingseason.

VolunteersdeposittheweededfrogbitonascowthatPointBayMarinastaffregularlytows,

emptiesandcompoststhefrogbit.

Aspartoftheproject,volunteershavecreatedanaturalhistorylog,alistofplantsand

animalsspottedinthebay.Thelogincludes38typesofbirds,sevenmammals,tenreptiles,

twofishand31plants.Somehighlightsincludebeaverseatinglilyroots,muskratbuilding

homesofcattails,andpaintedturtlesrestingonafloatinglog.Detailsaboutthenatural
