Brief Synopsis

i. Original Design Intent: Encourage interaction between teachers and students while still providing clearly defined spaces for each group.

ii. Key architectural features: The courtyards provide a gathering space that is welcoming and allows for east / west breezes to circulate, which helps ease Miami’s intense heat. The two courtyards represent theinteraction of students and teachers. Hispanic culture is referenced through the Colombianart color palette and courtyard stairs which represent those of Mayan temples. A lounge area on the first level of the Chapman Building provides a space for students to gather and work.

(Fig 2) The orientation of the courtyard opening welcomes students into the Chapman Graduate School of Business

Center at Miami’s Florida International University.

iii. Significance: This building is important to its users and FIU because it provides an inspirational learning environment. Classrooms provide a space for instruction and discourse while communal spaces allow for students to gather, discuss lessons, and share ideas. The buildings design and interior encourages academic community and learning.
