Baptism
This morning we rejoice in the baptism of Thomas McCurrie Mize, son of Alexandra and Andrew Mize.
“I sought the Lord, and He answered me. He delivered me from all my fears.”
Psalm 34:4
This past week I was directed in my devotional time to Psalm 34. I had read this psalm a number of times but I needed to be reminded of a certain spiritual reality of enormous importance. It has to do with fear. I don’t know that there’s anything more de-bilitating to the Christian than fear. If there’s one thing that ab-solutely stops the spiritual growth of the one in Christ, it is fear.
It’s interesting that fear and troubles are connected in Psalm 34. A prominent Hebrew scholar said that trouble has in it the idea of being constricted, cramped, or pinched. The expression, “frozen in fear” is probably an experience most of us have known. Fear is rarely associated with forward movement. Fear has a way of making our imaginations run wild. It doesn’t take long for an ounce of fear to turn into a ton of despair.
In Psalm 34 David approaches God with a spiritual and emo-tional weight that has the potential to interrupt every divine pur-pose that God intends. Don’t forget that God has chosen David to lead a nation in righteousness. The anointing of God is upon David. Think about that call!
And then, consider this call that communicates the will of God for Big Canoe Chapel. It’s found in 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people be-longing to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” What may constrict or cramp that call? I firmly believe it is fear. Fear of fail-ure. Fear of man’s rejection. Fear of our inadequacy rather that faith established by God’s sufficiency.
David did something and we can learn from it. He simply sought God. He didn’t allow his troubles to stop him. Get this progression---I have troubles, I’m filled with fear, I sought God, He answered, I was delivered.
Father, help me to remember that.
Grace and peace,
Len
