Pilgrimage to Ireland May 2014

In keeping with our Chapel traditions, we are planning a Pil-grimage to Ireland, to follow the footsteps of John Wesley through Ireland, studying Wesley’s deep understanding of the Holy Spirit, the Scriptures, and how the Spirit in-fills our lives. Rev. Lamar Helms will lead the pilgrimage, organized through Educational Opportunities. The 10-day pilgrimage in Southern Ireland is planned for late May, 2014. A 4-day extension to Belfast in Northern Ireland will be offered as an opti0n. If you have an interest in making this pilgrimage, please join Lamar on Sunday, May 5, immediately after the 10:30 wor-ship service at the front of the chapel, or contact him at [email protected]. We will share pilgrimage itiner-aries and costs at that meeting, as well as get names of those interested.

The essence of the Reformation reinstatement to the church five hundred years ago was sola Scriptura, sola fides, sola gratia. In her book, Worship Evangelism, Sally Morgenthaler comments on this historic foundational principle by stating, “By the absolute au-thority of Scripture, we know that it is only through the gift of faith and by the power of God’s grace that we have access to both a sav-ing and sanctifying relationship with God.”

Growing in grace is a priceless gift and invitation in Scripture. I believe it’s a faith journey that deepens one’s sense of joy and peace. The freedom we have in Christ will never be fully realized apart from God’s rest in grace.

Not long ago, Bible scholar William Hendricks wrote,

“The church, by and large….is frightened of grace….A lot of pastors and lay people will say, ‘This grace stuff is nice, but if there’s too much emphasis on it, people will end up getting away with murder.’ We wonder why there is such a poor performance level in the church, why people’s lives are falling apart. It’s not because we’re preaching too much grace that people think they can get away with murder or adultery or whatever. It’s that the grace hasn’t gone deep enough. When the grace goes deep enough, it touches the deep rootedness of desire that causes me to want to please God.”

I’m thankful to be a part of a church family growing in grace. It creates an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. It communicates a powerful testimony to the Big Canoe community. It’s grace and it’s amazing!

Blessings and grace,

Len
