FROM THE HEADMISTRESS

Dear Parents, As I mentioned in last week’s Newsletter, Mr Pritchett has chosen our TED Challenge this term and a link to ‘Gnomes’ a section of music from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition will be sent home for the girls to listen to, Think and Explore. Discoveries will be collated after half term and an exhibition mounted in the Entrance hall. We are going to hear the piece of music in assembly on Monday. Year 6 entrance exams are just about finished now, although interviews continue for several of the girls. Many of the offers will soon be made although the final choices and acceptances will not take place until the 5th March. Year 6 will then embark on an exciting program including cycle training, touch typing, movie making, rehearsals for performances, their residential to Snowdonia and many other activities as well as a certain number of their regular lessons. Year 2 visited the Little Angel Theatre this week and next Thursday Year 4 will be experiencing a Viking Day. Well done to the girls who performed in today’s Music Assembly especially Stella who only learnt ‘London’s Burning’ on the recorder yesterday! Have an enjoyable weekend

LIBRARY Students at The Cavendish can mark their birthdays by donating a book to the School library. Each book is given a special bookplate inside the cover noting the name and birthday of the donor and the year of donation. Birthday books can be selected from the Cavendish Library's Wishlist at www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/3EXXY9WNRIVL7 If you would prefer to make your own choice of book please consult with Mrs Walters first to avoid duplications. If you prefer to choose a book from the Wishlist, but would rather buy it from an independent bookseller, please inform Mrs Walters so that she can remove it from the Wishlist. Got a book recommendation for the library Wishlist? Email [email protected] or [email protected]" Thank you to Anna in Reception J for donating the following books to the Library to celebrate her birth-day on 26th December: Madeline in London and Madeline and the Gypsies by Ludwig Bemelmans and also Elmer by David McKee. And to: Julia (Reception J) for her birthday on 28th December who do-nated The Slightly Annoying Elephant by David Walliams.

The Reception classes went on a 3D shape walk around Camden yesterday afternoon. We found

all the 3D shapes we had been learning about in class and enjoyed the sunshine whilst we were

looking!

Welcome back from the FOC!

We’d love to share with you all our news about the help the FOC has been giv-

ing, thanks to all your recent fundraising efforts! Part of the funds we raise

goes to charity – and part helps with some of those little “extras” that make

our children’s school experience a bit more fun.

At the end of last term we bought a set of lovely new gym mats (£4,000) and

10 mini iPads (£3,000) and these have gone down

really well.

On the charity side, we have been able to make a substantial donation to Is-

lington Young Carers and the Christmas Card project helped Hope and Or-

phans in the Wild.

This term you will have seen an annual contribution of £15 to the FOC on

your bills. This goes into a special fund which is mainly used to help out with

educational psychologist reports and, where there is a need, music lessons.

However, your thoughts are always very welcome as to both the fun

and the serious things you feel your FOC should be helping out with.

Dates for you diaries: on Wednesday 12th March we have the Spring Event

and it’s a Battle of the Wines. New versus Old Worlds. Come and join us for

some wine tasting and lively discussion. Tickets will be on sale soon through

your Form Reps.

We also have another of our very popular Film Nights in the pipeline – more

details to follow.

Looking forward to another busy term,

Nicola Rushton

Chair, FOC

Netball

Congratulations to Year 6

Netball teams for their ex-

cellent play in Wednes-

day’s netball fixture against

North Bridge House. It

was a very tough match

and we managed a win,

12:10 to The Cavendish.

Thank you to all the par-

ents who came to support

our girls.

COMPOSER OF THE WEEK RIMSKY-KORSAKOV

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was born in 1844 in a village east of St. Petersburg, Rus-

sia. Though Nikolai showed a talent for music at an early age, he pursued an educa-

tion at the School for Mathematical and Navigational Sciences in St. Petersburg and

later joined the Imperial Russian Navy. It was not until he met Mily Balakirev in

1861 that he decided to concentrate on developing his musical skills. When Rimsky

-Korsakov was not at sea, Balakirev encouraged and taught him how to compose

music. It also was through Balakirev that Rimsky-Korsakov met four other compos-

ers who later became known as the The Five.

In 1871, Rimsky-Korsakov took a post as the professor of composition and orches-tration at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. During his first few years as a teacher at the Conservatory he also concentrated on developing his own skills as a composer. In 1872, Rimsky-Korsakov married Nadezhda Nikolayevna Purgold (1848-1919), a pianist and composer. Modest Mussorgsky, Last week’s composer, Mussorgsky was

his best man at their wedding.
