b u y e r s a r e w i l l i n g t o p u t u p w i t h t h e i n -

c o n v e n i e n c e s o f v a r y i n g p r i c e s , b u t t h i s

c a n n o t l a s t l o n g . T h o s e o f o u r - m a n u f a c -

t u r e r s w h o h a v e a l o n g v i e w a r e m o s t p e s s i -

m i s t i c , a n d t h e r e a r e s i g n s o f i n c r e a s i n g

u n e m p l o y m e n t i n t h e n e a r f u t u r e .

This unemployment-the constant dread

of the working man-is, in my opinion,

deliberately created by the hotheads o f

Labour . W h e n t h e w a r e n d e d , e v e n w i t h t h e

h i g h p r i c e s of l a b o u r , a p r o l o n g e d p e r i o d o f i n -

d u s t r i a l p r o g r e s s a n d p r o s p e r i t y w a s i n s i g h t .

L a b o u r c o u l d h a v e , a n d n o d o u b t w o u l d h a v e ,

s e c u r e d i t s f a i r s h a r e , b u t L a b o u r i s l o s i n g

t h e o p p o r t u n i t y , a n d d i s t r e s s , p o v e r t y a n d

unemployment threaten us . The moderate

Labour leader knows the danger, and has

f o u g h t s t o u t l y f o r t h e i r m e n . But a wave

of mad communism the work of the Jew-

B o l s h e v i k s - h a s c a u g h t u p a p o w e r f u l s e c t i o n

o f L a b o u r , a n d t h e r e i s n o t e v e n a n y p r e t e n c e

n o w o f s a f e g u a r d i n g t h e i n t e r e s t s o f t h e

working man . I t i s a l l a p o l i t i c a l g a m e -

n a t i o n a l i s a t i o n , d i r e c t a c t i o n a n d o p e n r e v o -

l u t i o n . W h a t d o t h e y w a n t , t h e s e p e o p l e ?

A new heaven and a new earth, fashioned

a f t e r t h e i r i d e a l s ? They seek the " p r o l e -

t a r i a n d i c t a t o r s h i p " - w h a t e v e r t h a t may

If the Jew-Bolsheviks had produced a

s y s t e m b y w h i c h t h e g o v e r n e d w e r e h a p p i e r ,

f r e e r a n d m o r e p r o s p e r o u s t h a n t h e p e o p l e s

under other systems, there would be every

excuse for any attempt to imitate them .

But in Russia trades unionism has been

s t a m p e d o u t , r e l i g i o n m o c k e d , l i b e r t y d e n i e d ,

a n d t h e w i l l o f t h e a u t o c r a c y o f t h e S o v i e t s

impressed on everybody . I t i s a s y s t e m o f

r u l e b y t e r r o r . Whoever holds a contrary

o p i n i o n t o ' the Soviet Government is exe-

cuted or imprisoned . Disease is rampant,

and, from all accounts which we get from

Russia, never was any country in such a

desperately unhappy state . And this is

w h a t o u r e x t r e m i s t s w a n t f o r u s ?

B u t i s i t ? Communism, anarchy and the

" d i c t a t o r s h i p o f t h e p e o p l e " are words and

convey nothing to the student of history

a n d p o l i t i c s . They are mere terms used to

d e s c r i b e p h r a s e s o f p o l i t i c a l o r p o p u l a r m o v e -

ments . W h e n t h e y a r e a c h i e v e d , t h e r e s t i l l

remains a permanent system of government

t o d e v i s e . We must credit the leaders of

B o l s h e v i s m w i t h t h e p o w e r o f s e e i n g f a r t h e r

t h a n t h e i r n o s e s , a s t h e c o m m o n p h r a s e g o e s .

I n d e e d , s o m e o f t h e m a r e g i f t e d w i t h a v e r y

h i g h i n t e l l i g e n c e , t h o u g h t h e y s e e m t o p o s s e s s

a l o w m o r a l s t a n d a r d . They have worked it

o u t t o t h e n t h d e g r e e . Communism cannot
