The Ascension, May 28, 2017Painful Goodbyes: deeper mysteries in life perhaps the one we struggle with the most is the mystery of the Ascension. It’s not so much that we misunderstand it, we simply don’t understand it.Ascension? Historically it was an event within the life of Jesus and the

early church and is now a feast-day for Christians, one that links Easter to Pentecost. But it is more than an historical event; it is at the same time a theology, spirituality, and an insight into life that we need to understand to better sort out the paradoxical interplay between life and death, presence and absence, love and loss. The Ascension names and highlights a paradox that lies deep at the center of life, namely, that we all reach a point in life where we can only give our presence more deeply by going away, so that others can receive the full blessing of our spirits. What does that mean? When Jesus was preparing to leahe kept repeating the words: “It is better for you that I go away! You will be sad now, but your sadness will turn to joy. If I don’t go away you will be unable to receive my spirit. Don’t cling to me, I must ascend.” Why is it better sometimes that we go away? Any parent with grown children has heard similar words from their children, unspoken perhaps but there nonetheless. When young people leave home to go to college or to begin life on their own, what they are really saying to their parents is: “Mum and dad, it is better that I go away. You will be sad now, but your sadness will turn to joy. If I don’t go, I will always be your little boy or little girl but I will be unable to give you my life as an adult. So please don’t cling to the child you once had or you will never be able to receive my adulthood. I need to go away now so that our love can come to full bloom.” The pain in this kind of letting go is often excruciating, as parents know, but to refuse to do that is to cut life short.

Question: God gave Christ “the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. ‘ What kind of fullness would you like to have in your life?

A novena (from Latin: novem, "nine") is an ancient tradition of devotional praying in Christianity in consisting of private or public prayers repeated for nine successive days or weeks. During a novena, the devotees make petitions, implore favors, or obtain graces by worshiping Jesus Christ, and asking for intercessions of the Virgin Mary or the saints of the faith. Individuals may express love and honor by kneeling, burning candles or placing flowers before for the person represented by a statue.

Next Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost and even though the nine days began on Friday, why not start one now to the Holy Spirit in guiding us in all things… It can’t hurt. The novena is available in the vestibules of the church.

Pastor’s Corner

With the celebrations of Confirmation and First Eucharist over I want to thank all those who assisted in the faith formation of our children and youth: the catechist volunteers, along with Melanie Broswick, Analisa Alegria, and the Lay Missionaries. As the parents are the primary teachers of their children in the faith, there responsibility of raising their children in the faith never ends, even the day the children move out of the house. Faith formation never ends. Thank you parents. I celebrate 36 years of priesthood this week, May 30th. From my first assignment at St. Bernard’s as a deacon with Fr Brady as my pastor and returning to Eureka 36 years as a priest, I have been assigned to many places: St. John’s in Healdsburg, St Anthony’s in Mendocino, St Vincent High School in Petaluma, St Patrick’s in Scotia, St. James in Petaluma, Our Lady of Good Counsel in Fort Bragg, The Theological Union in Washington D.C., St Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, the Vocation’s Office in Santa Rosa, St Mary’s in Lakeport, St. Joan of Arc in Yountville, Star of the Valley in Santa Rosa, Holy Spirit in Santa Rosa and now St Bernard/Sacred Heart in Eureka. It seems that I never totally unpack before I move again. In all of the moves I have only said ‘No’ to one move. Change affects me a lot different than you. Please keep me in your prayers and add a pray for the healing of my neck, degenerating discs.
