Our Parish Vision…..’Living as Christ’ Welcome, Engage, Love, Serve

I found myself challenged by today’s Gospel. Jesus calls two men and says “Follow me”. Though

neither refuses, both find reasons not to follow straight away; one asks to bury his father first, the

other wants to say goodbye to his family. Jesus response to their requests sounds harsh. Isn’t it

good to say goodbye to your loved ones, or to be present for the burial of a family member?

At this point, these men did not know what we, as Christians, know. They didn’t understand that the

man who was asking them to give up everything in their lives and follow him was none other than the

son of God.

How many times have we responded to God in the same way? God is calling us but it can be hard to

recognise Him. We may already have plans, important things we want to do, and although we hear

the call, we do not make following it priority.

However, no matter how many times we’ve delayed responding to God’s call, his invitation stands.

And even though we’ve gone our own way, Christ finds us where we are and requests our company

on his mission.

Being a disciple of Christ is not easy. It implies a leap of faith. It requires us to freely choose, every

single day, to live for something greater than ourselves.

Congratulations to three special parishioners who received Civic Honour Awards last night.

Joan Thompson; individual award, for her voluntary work in the parish, 25 years as a member of St

Vincent de Paul, hospital visiting, and her time spent knitting jersey’s and blankets for babies in the

neonatal ward.

Shona Roberts; Citizens Advice Bureau, Group Award. Henare O’Keefe thanked them all for being

integral team members with their calm approach, resourcefulness, leadership and commitment who

help those more vulnerable members of the community with matters both simple and complex.

Elizabeth Carr; individual award, for over 30 years to assisting with accounting and other duties.

Some of her voluntary work includes, contributing to the Te Mata Park Trust board, the Hastings

Swimming Charitable Trust as a trustee, Hawkes Bay Cultural Trust as trustee, HB Opera House as a

trustee and a member of the Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga audit and risk committee.

Greetings and welcome to our youth corner. A heartfelt thanks to all families, friends, and parishioners for your contribution of support towards our Confirmation youth. The teamwork and accompaniment we offered, helped strengthen their faith and confidence to be closer to Christ. We ask that you continue to

support our youth in their journey of a faith filled life.

To the youth band families (we need more), we are so blessed to have you lead the music in all our Youth Masses and especially on special occasions. Thank you so much for the extra hours of practicing to help make the Confirmation Mass so special. We pray that you will continue to serve God by the giving of your time and

talents to help build up His kingdom.

Last but not the least, to our young leaders, thank for offering your time and talents to lead this program and being wonderful role

models to the candidates.

Fr. Thomas O’Loughlin will be in Hastings to talk on the topic of

“Journeying with Luke’s Gospel through the Sundays of the

year”. Please join with us at Sacred Heart Church on the 11th of

“A Walk through the Mass: A Step-by-Step Explanation”

Part one: Gathering rites

Penitential Rite, Gloria. All the other ritual acts of this first part of the Mass are intended to gather us together into a worshiping assembly. Sometimes we are asked to pause and recall our common need for salvation (the Penitential Rite). Sometimes the hymn “Glory to God in the Highest” is sung or recited at this point. The “Gloria” has been a part of the Mass since about the sixth century! These longer hymns and responses are found in the missalette at our seat. Opening Prayer. At the close of this first part of the Mass the priest will ask us to join our minds in prayer, and after a few moments of silence he will collect our intentions into one prayer to which we all respond “Amen,” a Hebrew word for “So be it.”

HOSPITAL CHAPEL SERVICE - We need your help. On 7th, 14th and 21st of July our Parish is rostered to assist with accompanying patients from the wards to the Sunday service held in the hospital chapel. Branch 172 Hibernian AGM The Hibernian's will be holding their AGM after the 8.30a.m. Mass at OLOL on Sunday, 7th July 2019. Our officers will be installed at Mass, with morning tea to follow. After morning tea, our meeting will begin.

What a wonderful celebration last Sunday at St Peter

Chanel!

Sixteen children celebrated receiving the Body and Blood of

Christ for the very first time. Even the few technical hiccups

couldn’t dampen the mood. St Mary’s school was well

represented, the church was packed to the brim. Thank you to

all our leaders, Alison Clarke, Shauna Costello, Stephanie

Allen and Rebecca Lyall who walked with our children on their

faith journey, which lead to this wonderful sacrament.

St. Mary’s Primary School - In Joy Cowley’s book, Veil over the Light, there is a quote which says “In perfection, there is no room for growth.” It came steadfastly into my mind at the First Holy Communion Mass last Sunday. When the power point was not working one of my options was to burst into tears and have a nervous breakdown on the spot. However, with the great expertise of Preston and Greg Epplett and Father Vince (I am eternally grateful to you all!) it sort of got sorted and we went on to celebrate a wonderful Mass. St. Joseph’s Primary School – Week 9 Leading into the end of Term Two and there is quite a lot happening at St. Joseph’s School- Our Juniors have visited Otatara Pa to follow up on their unit studies into the Seasons and Matariki (the Maori name for the cluster of stars known as Pleiades). Breakfast will be served for our school community on Thursday (4th) to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Science Fair will take place on Tuesday 2 July in the School Hall. Everyone is welcome to view the exhibits. Also Advance Notice – St. Joseph’s Quiz and Curry Night – to be held on Friday 20 September. Mark the date on your calendar and get your team organised!

St. John’s College - It was wonderful to see ten of our young men being confirmed over the week-end and the support they received from their family and friends. On Monday our Y11 students walked from St Pat’s church in Napier to St John’s in Hastings to raise money for the “Whatever It Takes” Trust. This is an organisation that provides support for people suffering with mental health and addiction issues. This is the penultimate week of term two. We will end our term next on Thursday with our St John’s Feast Day Mass which will take place at 10am at Sacred Heart Church. We are holding our OPEN EVENING on Sunday 4th August at 6pm. Sacred Heart College - We had a wonderful day on Friday celebrating Feast Day - Mass, followed by a lovely morning tea in the Hannigan centre and then back to school for our annual Feast Day concert. Students from Fairhaven in Havelock North joined us, as they always do, for the day. On July 31 we will hold our annual Touch of Class – where Year 7 and 8 students get to experience a day in the life of a high school student.
