2020 Annual Report July 1, 2019—June 30, 2020
From the Executive Director
Dear Friends of The Catholic Foundation,
As we begin each new year I am always filled with hope. When 2020 began it seemed like it
was going to be a great year. However, all that changed quickly and so many will remember 2020
as the year of the Coronavirus Pandemic. I do not think anyone could have predicted something
like this would ever happen in modern times. By mid-year many of us were sheltering in place,
wearing masks, and trying to keep our families healthy.
While many of us will remember the challenging times that we faced, we are happy to report
that at the Catholic Foundation we faced many of these challenges and turned them into accom-
plishments. We set up our home offices and began a new routine. We quickly learned how to set
up zoom meetings so we could communicate with our donors and we began to re-envision our
events like our annual Bishop’s Cup.
I would like to thank all our donors. Because of your support we were able to meet our membership goal. As
you know, it is through our membership donations that we can operate the Foundation office, so we do not have to
charge management fees to each of our trust. We appreciate your generosity. We would also like to thank all our do-
nors who supported the many trusts. As you read through this report, I hope that it generates pride within you. It is be-
cause of your generosity that we can continue to grow the Foundation each year.
I would like to thank the Investment Committee. The members of this committee were dedicated to ensuring our
portfolio weathered the financial storm. They were committed to meeting weekly to keep a close eye on the market. I
would like to also thank our Board of Directors who also had to learn new technology so we could meet via zoom to con-
tinue to conduct business.
As we look back on the year of 2020, as a country our resiliency will be remembered and at the Foundation, we
will remember how our resiliency helped us to weather the storm. It is with great pride that we achieved so many accom-
plishments through our dedication to our donors, portfolio management, membership drive and our golf tournament. All
these accomplishments ensure the future success of our beneficiaries and ministries supported by The Foundation.
The Foundation staff is here to help you with your legacy gift. Please contact our office and we will work with you
on the type of gift that meets your philanthropic goals. As 2020 is behind us we look ahead to 2021 with optimism and
a belief in our mission.
Warmest Regards,
Rebecca Harris

trusts. A trust with The Catholic Foundation is a way to leave a legacy that will make a difference for generations. It is a
simple and easy process.

Donor Stories
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Greenwood, MS
I was baptized as an infant in a small parish in the MS Delta that I still attend. I have seen the number of families in our
church decline from the 1970’s and I started a trust because I think the Mississippi Delta will still be declining in populat ion
going forward. With a trust my parish can receive annual income in the future to financially support my church family.
~ Mike Upchurch, Greenwood, MS
St. Richard Catholic Church, Jackson, MS
I wanted to start a trust to support the practice of my Catholic faith. As I grew up, my mother instilled a deep love of my
Catholic faith in me. My wife Judy and I were raised Catholic and 52 years ago we were married at St. Richard. This trust will
support the parish that has given so much to us through the years.
~ Mike Hart, Jackson, MS
St. Joseph Catholic School, Madison, MS
We started the Delaski Family Scholarship Trust at St. Joe in mom’s name as a tribute to her love and dedication to Catholic
Education. Throughout her 30 plus years of teaching in the Jackson Diocese, she often found herself financially supporting
deserving students whose financial situation would not allow them to continue their education at St. Joe. This fund was
established to continue her behind the scenes financial support of these deserving students.
~ Jean Terry, Jackson, MS
Vicksburg Catholic School, Vicksburg, MS
My family has been a part of St. Francis/ St. Al Catholic Schools for over four generations. My sister Rita was the youngest
of seven siblings to attend Vicksburg Catholic schools. She loved every moment! She was a devoted member of the band
throughout. When she died at age 52 from cancer it was devastating because she was the youngest and life wasn’t suppose
to happen that way. I wanted a way to honor her memory and I knew establishing a Trust with The Catholic Foundation in her
name to aid a Vicksburg Catholic band student was the right way to do it. I’m proud to continue my family’s support of
Catholic education in this way.

Diocesan Protection of Children
Safe Environment Grant—VIRTUS is a comprehensive safe environment program utilized in the Diocese of Jackson. VIRTUS
assists the diocese in our commitment to Protecting God’s Children. In the Virtus training sessions, we are each called to
make concrete changes to protect the children in our homes, churches, schools, and communities. All adults are protectors
of children, regardless of the individual’s role in the Church. We are all involved in protecting children because we are part
of the solution in eradicating child sexual abuse. VIRTUS plays a vital role in the solution of recognizing and addressing child
sexual abuse. This grant has helped to accomplish our mission. ~ Vickie Carollo, Protection of Children Coordinator
Catholic Charites Born Free/New Beginnings Program
Our Catholic Foundation Grant was crucial in assisting pregnant and parenting mothers secure much needed supplies for
their children such as diapers, wipes, formula, baby bottles, infant clothing, bassinets, and developmental toys which they
would not otherwise have been able to afford. Each infant in the Born Free/New Beginnings program had basic needs met
due to the generosity of the Catholic Foundation Grant. ~ Wanda Thomas, Catholic Charities Executive Director
St. James Leland
Had it not been for the Foundation grant, St. James, Leland would not be able to send out our bulletins, readings, and other
important items to our parishioners once COVID-19 began. We had a very old printer (20+ years and no parts available). I
applied for a grant and received the grant in time to purchase a new printer with scan, e-mail, and color printing. We could
have not purchased this printer had we not received this grant. ~ Deborah Ruggeri, St. James, Leland, MS
Diocesan Family Ministry—Choose Life Billboards
“The $2,800 grant from the Catholic Foundation provided for a very effective form of spiritual advertisement promoting pro-
life and respect for all life in Diocese of Jackson. The beautiful, prayerful, and inspirational design of Our Lady and Baby
Jesus encourages those who view it to pray to stop the abortion of innocent lives perishing every day, and to pray for the
saving of all lives. The Office of Family Ministry received very positive comments from individuals reflecting how the
billboards touched their hearts, and inspired them to pray and share their concerns on the critical issues of pro-life.”
~ Charlene Bearden, Family Ministry Coordinator
St. Peter Grenada
"Our Sacristy was in very bad shape. It is my belief that good stewardship includes taking care of our assets, especially our
church building, so that we can minister to our parish effectively. This grant will allow us to get to the bottom of the
plumbing issues, repair and reinforce the subfloor, install new tile flooring and new cabinetry. Without the grant
from Catholic Foundation we would not have been able to make these repairs happen." ~ Crystal Hogan, St. Peter Grenada, MS
