T h e P a p e r P u l p i t 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Last week, this week and the next three weeks our Gospel readings are from St. John. We are in the midst of St. Mark’s Gospel,
but every three years, there are five weeks devoted to St. John’s Gospel, focusing on the Holy Eucharist and what we believe as
Catholics about the Eucharist.
From the scripture readings: A generation ago, Karl Rahner made the statement that there would soon come a time when each of
us will either be a mystic or a non-believer. What’s implied here? At one level, it means anyone who wants to have faith today
will need to be much more inner-directed than in previous generations. Why? Up until our present generation, in the secularized
world, by and large, the culture helped carry the faith. We lived in cultures in which faith and religion were part of the very fabric
of life. Faith and church were embedded in the sociology. When I was a kid, everyone went to church on Sunday. In fact, it took
a strong action not to go to church on Sunday. Today, as we know, the opposite is true. It takes a strong, inner-anchored act to go
to church on Sunday.
The culture no longer carries the faith and the church. Simply put, we knew how to be believers and church-goers when we
belonged to communities that helped carry that for us. Most everyone seemed to believe, most everyone went to church, and most
everyone had the same set of moral values in these communities. To be committed believers today, to have faith truly inform our
lives, requires finding an inner anchor beyond the support and security which comes from being part of the majority where we
have the comfort of knowing that, since everyone else is doing this, it probably makes sense. Many of us now live in situations
where to believe in God and church is to find ourselves without the support even of those closest to us, spouse, family, friends,
and colleagues. That is one of the things that Rahner is referring to when he says we will be either mystics or non-believers.
What is this deep, inner-anchor that is needed to sustain us? What can give us the support we need? What can help sustain our
faith when we feel like our faith is being trounced on? There has to be a deeper source than outside affirmation to give us
meaning, justification, and energy to continue to do what faith asks of us. What is that source? Our Lord Jesus tells us in John’s
gospel that, “He is the Bread come down from heaven.” He continues in verse 51 of chapter 6, “I am the living bread come down
from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Our
Lord commands us some twelve times in this one chapter alone to eat His Flesh and drink His Blood in order to have eternal life.
We are fortunate to be able to drink His Blood and Eat His Body at the Holy Mass. Remember that the Eucharist is not a symbol
of Christ’s presence but is the actual Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. It may be hard to believe, but we take Jesus’
word. Please look up and read chapter 6 from St. John’s Gospel. Pray it! Notice our Lord commands us to eat His Flesh and
drink His Blood if we want eternal life. He tells us if we do not, we won’t inherit eternal life. I invite you again, look it up in
Chapter 6 from St. John’s Gospel. Every time we gather at Mass, we eat His Body and drink His Blood—just as He commands.
He is the one who sustains us. He is the one and only one that gives us strength.
My brothers and sisters in Christ, if we only knew the gift God was giving us, we would never miss Mass. How many of us miss
Mass because we are camping, or allow our kids to play sports on Sunday keeping us away from Mass? We say, “God
understands.” Does He? We need to spend at least one hour a week praying at Mass and following His command to eat His
Body and drink His Blood. If you know someone who has stopped coming to Mass (or is going to a non-Catholic Church),
please invite them back.
RCIA: Are you (or someone you know):
• An unconfirmed Catholic and want to be married in the Catholic Church?
• An unconfirmed adult in the Catholic Church and wish to be confirmed?
• From another Christian denomination interested in joining the Catholic Church?
• Non-Catholic and married to a Catholic and have been attending Mass with them?
• Not baptized and would like to be?
We would love to have you part of the Church and our parish community. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation into
Adulthood) begins this fall. Please contact Fr. Jim as soon as possible to learn more about joining the Catholic Church.
In Christ,
Father Jim Trempe

Is God Calling You? We currently have openings in our
CCD program for catechists and those
available to substitute periodically. Imagine helping youth discover the most
important choice in a lifetime… Jesus!
Imagine helping youth understand
their faith is not another subject to study,
but rather a way of life, so they
experience a personal
relationship with God.
There is no greater gift
you can give a child! If you feel God is calling you to the
ministry of catechesis (teaching) to
nurture the faith of our young people,
contact Kim at 715.252.8745.

In August,
we celebrate the anniversary
of the Baptismal Days of:
Nathaniel Bannach Lukus Schuh Parker Firkus
Please keep them in your prayers!
Mother Teresa felt her Baptism day was
even more important than her birth day;
through Baptism we receive
the WORD of God which works through us, transforms us,
and calls us to the purpose
for which we are put on this earth.
LORD, bless these children;
grant that they may hear Your voice
and faithfully respond to Your Call.
Elizabeth Ministry has gifts for these
children in the gathering space.
Hello Fellow Parishioners,
I want to thank you for all the prayers. I
have been asked some questions about my
formation process; I hope this will answer those
questions for you. First, God willing, I will be a
Postulant for about a year. I will experience the
Carmelite way of life. Next, God willing, I will be
a Novice for about two years. I will strive to
become filled with the spirit of the congregation,
spending much time in study, prayer, and
reflection in preparation for taking the vows. I
will receive the habit, a white veil, and my
religious name. Then, God willing, I will profess
first vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience and
get a black veil. I will then renew the vows yearly
for five years until final vows.
Please continue to pray for me as I leave for
St. Louis on August 5th and enter on August 9th
God willing. Know that I will be praying for all of
you. Also, feel free to send me mail at the
following address:
